He is also tax collec tor. The lookout at the cape yesterday reported a galo from the S. W.j bar rough. The Idaho arrived in yesterday from below with a large cargo of freight The Columbia left San Francisco on time yesterday, and is due to morrow. A six-fingered Chinaman in J. 0. Hanthorn's cannery attracts consider able attention. The Renfrewshire is loaded with flour and salmon, of which latter Astoria furnished 2,G0G case9. Chas. F. Powell, captain of engineers, gives notice concerning improvement of Chehahs river. A special meeting of the vestry of Grace church will be held in the ves try room this evening at 7 o'clock, for the purpose of incorporating. William Kinney, late of Dayton, W. T., arrived down on last even ing's boat. We understand it is his intention to go into business in this city. Tlios. S. Jewett yesterday gave bonds in the sum of $1,000 for the performauco of the duties appertain ing to the office and was duly installed auditor and cleric. The good ship Imperial, Crosby, master, which sailed from 2tew York at twenty minutes past four on the afternoon of October 23, 1882, is oat side with a pilot on board. No man that was"the governor of a state has ever reached the presiden cy of the United States by election. Standard. Our Portland friend has set a cun ningly devised sentence to induce some Eastern Oregon contemporary to instance Hayes of saintly memory. Then will be heard the cry of "frod." Chas. F. Nickerson died at the hospital last Tuesday, and will be buried from there this afternoon at two o'clock. Deceased had of late been employed as a minstrel at Stephan's varieties, and was ailing for some time prior to his death. He was a native of England, aged 50 years. In the last week wo have received mammoth editions of the Daily Ore gonian, and the Daily Ifews, which speak well for the business enterprise of those journals, and the extraordi nary prosperity of the busy city in which they are published. Both pa pers seem ,be doing well, and are in the full tide of prosperity. Mrs. Dr. Pott's Lecture . At Liberty hall yesterday afternoon, tihe breaking clouds gave the ladies a few brief minutes of sunshine in which to gather, and the auditorium was filled. In the evening a still greater crowd assembled. The doctor lectured upon the brain and nervous system, and in a clear, intelligent manner gave expresssion "to her views relative thereto. This afternoon she will begin her course of lectures to ladies. To-night she will lecture at eight o'clock, the subject being food and digestion, when the important questions of what to eat and how to cat it will be discussed. A Delayed Letter. Sax Feakcisco, March 20, 1883. Ed. Asterian: "Oh! how I suffer" for an Astoriak to read occasionally. If some enter prising newsman here would take a few copies I am sure they would be sold. We do not hear the snickering re marks about the continual rains we have up in Oregon. In fact the aver age Californian is now intensely anx ious that the Oregon dampness would extend further south. The would be prophet is now figuring up the loss to California in lessened value of exports at tens of millions of dollars. There is a very general complaint amongst the passengers traveling be tween Puget Sound and San Francisco that the cars and boats do not con nect at Kalama. Passengers and mails have to lay over one day at Kalama or else be carried by Portland with an usual loss of time of one day. , This is no new complaint. The As torians have tried to get it remedied for the past four years without avail. It would seem that nothing but an unreasonable prejudice to Astoria's welfare wohH continue a custom that is so easily remedied. Why is it too that the company does not sell tickets for Astoria When I applied to buy tickets for Astoria, I was given tickets for Portland and told that I could get off at Astoria. One would suppose that tho company was trying to avoid any record being made of the large passenger business now being done between San Francisco and Astoria. I hope however that both these mat ters will soon be remedied. Cuxtux. Second State Firemen's Tournament. The following is the programme for the annual tournament of 18S3, to be held at Salem, Juno loth and 10th 1883. How 'Tis Done Opposito tho criminal court, Chi cago, says Peck's Sun, is a row of sa loons, and when one bar-tender gots beat he steers the beat on to the rest. The other day a fairly dressed man came in and asked for a drink, and after disposing of it he leaned over the -bar and confidently told the bar keeper that he had no money but he expected a friend in from Peoria at three o'clock and would drop in and pa. He was too respectable looking to thump, and so the bar-tender just looked at him in disgust and he went out. A little time after three o'clock the man came in with a friend, and with his thumb and finger .in his vest pocket, he said, smiling, "I sup pose you thought I would not come around again." The bar-tender siniled, and said, "Sir I knew you would come back. I can tell a gentle man when I see one, and I said to myself: That gentleman is good for all ho calls for." The man thanked tho bar-tender for his confi dence, and said it was pleasant these days when there were so many beats around to feel that business men had not entirely lost confidence in every body. Then he called for the drinks, and he and his friend took good, square, everyday sort of full glasses, and after he had wiped his mouth and asked what brand of whisk that was, and said they would take one more, ho said to the bar-tender, "I came in to tell you that my friend from Peoria did not arrive. I expect he will bo here at six o'clock, when I will come in and demonstrate to yon that your confidence is well placed." Hotel Arrivals. OCCIDENT. Wholly Unnecessary- We are in receipt of an announce ment concerning "a great puzzle." Its inventor describes it as "equal in interest and vexation to tho great 15 puzzle," and further assures us that it is "full of perplexing and exasper ating combinations, but perfectly simple of solution when you know how." He tells us that ho will send it to U3 "on receipt of 25 cents." If he wants to take that trick he has led from tho wrong suit. We don't need to send 25 cents to New York to get something which will occasion Texation and which is full of perplex ing and exasperating combinations." There is no hiatus in our young life that is rendered dreary by the lack of something to perplex and embarrass us, but deeming it just possible that some of our readers may be out of a supply of vexation we consider it a christian duty to inform them that by sending this man tho simple sum of 25 cents they will be promptly fur nished with a ready-made supply of vexation, perplexity and exasperation. Cheap enough. There may be scions of luxurious ease who yearn for something to break in upon the dull monotony, the ennui of their lives, and who hail with joy the opportu nity to get something that will vex or perplex them, but we have not bumped up agaiust anybody in Asto ria at dato of present writing who seemed to be suffering from that particular kind of mental activity. It may be that there are merchants in Astoria- who don't advertise and whose time hangs heavy en their hands who might need something of that nature in lack of customers, but,on the whole, we believe that our inven tive friend will not "make his 'tarnal fortune" by the sale of his perplexing and exasperating wares. Cut looking at the matter in its broader interpretation, the New York man seems to have inadvertently given us a paraphrase upon life itself. Life, as we find it, is a "puzzle," it is "in teresting" sometimes, when just for the fun of the thing, as it were, one wants to live a few years longer just to see what will happen, and it is oft times vexatious when the wrong cards come out of the box and the player at the game finds the case keeper and look out as alert as he, and his bet goes to the house. It is full of ''per plexing and exasperating combina tions," of unforeseen and unguarded points of attack, but unlike the New York man's puzzle, it is not "simple of solution' even to the lucky few who have been favored with informa tion as to tho "know how." Getting Storms Down Fine. Sergeant Merrill of the signal service says: "Wo have had ship captains taking observations of the receut storms from all points at vari ous times, and in a few days we shall have a complete history of its vagaries, with a perfect picture of its path. It began in the Atlantic ocean, east of the Bahamas. Its origin was duo to the recent cold wave that swept over tho South, coming in contact with a moist wave from the tropics. It struck us just off Hattera.3, tr.ivclcd up the coast, met the storm from tho north east, and both blow theni3elvc3 off American territory together. The storm is now traveling toward Eng land. It will take five or six days to get there. A cha"t I received to dav from Washington is de signed to illustrato the peculiarity of storms in crossing the ocean. In a fow months the work will be so de veloped that it will be possible for tho weather observers to warn English sailors of the approach of storms with remarkable certainty a week ahead. The path of the storms is being rapid ly figured down fine, and ocean steam ers, by keeping outside their southerly limit, will catch the westerly winds and go whizzing along with great speed and perfect safety. Of course we don't want you to give us away, as we have promised the young men not to let you into the secret; but of course you will want to see what kind of crockery you are going to use, and as it is all here wo would like to have you inspect it.
