CI) - 'iMtc 33iixls storiau. ASTORIA, OREGON: WEDNESDAY-FEBRUARY 2S, lhS3 Sheriff O'Nicl. The eight o'clock rule is still in force. The A. 15. Field will ply between Astoria and Iloquarton. The El Capitan has on board 75, 054 bushels wheat, worth $S5,5G3. J. G. Ross sold his place near Knappa yesterday to D. G. Ross for Sl,700. Attention is directed to the an nouncement of W. Gallick in another column. The Shubrick is putting down an automatic buoy outside the south channel. More than G,000 hogs have been slaughtered in Walla Walla county this season. The Yidette says that steel head salmon are being caught by the Indi ans in Chehalis river. The Oregon Bible society will hold its annual meeting in the first Presbyterian church at Portland, next Fridav evening. The Odd Fellows building is daily assuming finer proportions; yes terday the work of cementing the out side walls began. A few of the coming fishing fleet were out yesterday shaking a sail in the afternoon breeze and testni g the build of their little crafts. By the bursting of an emery wheel last Monday in Portland, Frank Reed, of the Willamette stove works, received probably fatal injuries. The regular consignment of Chi nese arrived yesterday on the Fleet wood. The town is fast filling up with the blue-bloused heathen. Attention is directed to the ad vertisement of tho Astoria Marble works. Parties wanting any work of the nature advertised can bo suited without going elsewhere. Skipanon residents with commen dable enterprise are building a tele graph line which will tap the govern ment line at tho mouth of the river and run down to the settlement. So that another good effect of Uncle Sam's appropriation will be instanta neous communication with our friends to the west. Three Senators. It seems to have escaped notico among our Webfoot quiduncs, the leading advantage we at present pos sess in tho U. S. senate by having ihree renrcsentaiives on the floor! The gentleman who has just been elected senator from Minnesota, as successor to Windom, is a partner in oue of the leading firms of our city in the agricultural implement line the house of Seymour, Sabia & Co., on corner First and Madison streets. The material interests of Senator Sabm are directly entwined with Oregon's prosperity and development to an ex tent the same as if he were an actual resident; and has the future fortuitous relation, that the two states which embrace his residence and Pacific coast business, severally embrace the eastern and western terminus of the Northern Pacific railroad, actually merging his official and business status to such an extent as no other senator ever before possessed in American history. Com. Reporter. Death of an Old Resident Judge Roberts died suddenly at Cathlamet last Friday evening. De ceased was an early pioneer; he was an Englishman by birth, and camo to this country in the employ of the Hudson Bay company about 45 ears ago. For many years ho remained in their employ and afterwards had charge of tho Pujjet Sound Afjricul tural company's farm. In 18G7 he removed to Cathlamet, Wahkiakum county, residing there continuously ever since. At the time of his death he was probate judge of the county. Friday evening he ate heartily as usual ana about an Hour alter com plained of a faintneEs in his head. In two hours more ho had breathed his last. Deceased was in tho 72d year of his age. Ho was held in high re gard by the citizens of Cathlamet who testified their regret by a largo attend ance at his funeral last Sunday. Suit has been brought by a sailor on board the British ship Renfrew shire, now in Portland, against Capt. Cummings, in which it is charged that, on the recent trip from Queensland, a number of the crew were placed on bread and water, for 17 days, because they wished to go ashore to complain of previous ill treatment. Gray's harbor covers an area of 70 square miles. The channels of the Chehalis, Humptulups, and St. John's rivers, the principal tributary streams, unite just inside the entrance and form an anchoraco sheltered by points Brown and Hanson, with 4,500 acres of area from 30 to 50 feet deep at low-tido with excellent hoiding ground. By a new ruling of tho postoffico department no mail matter except letters prepaid, can bo forwarded from tho office to which they were original ly addressed. For instance, if a paper come to the Astoria post office, it can not bo forwarded to the party to whom it is addressed, should he have moved outside tho county limits unless postage from this office is again pro paid. This rulo applies to all mail matter except letters. The steamer Empire brought from Jsan Jbrancisco to .fort iownsena a crew for the bark W. W. Crappo. On arrival there tho men refused to go on duty, and were placed in irons, and tho vessel was towed to sea. Lively times were expected, and as tho ves sel was off Point Wilson, the crew, who had been confined below, man aged to get their irons off, and, going on deck, threw them overboard. The captain of the Crappo then found it necessary to return to port. The new combination letter paper and envelope, now supplied to the post offices by the post department, is a sheet of letter paper with an enve- loDe flap bavins: on it a three cent stamp. All that a sender will have to do after writing a letter will bo to fold the letter sheet, seal it by moistening it with tho mucilage on the envelope flap and drop it in the nearest post office or letter box. The combination is to bo sold for three cents. As yet they have not been placed in the post offices on this coast. Educational Meeting. We are requested to announce that on next Friday afternoon" at two o'clock there will bo a teacher's meet ing at the Main street school house, for the purpose of discussing educa tional topics of practical inter ist. Parents and others who tako an inter est in educational work aro particu larly invited to bo present. The pro ceedings will bo informal, consisting mainly of suggestions and discussions by teachers and others concerning school government, etc. Firing revolvers inside the city limits is getting unpleasantly frequent. Yesterday afternoon a bullet whizzed by the ear of one of a group standing on Gray's dock, and struck the water just astern of tho Jeanic Land less. Had it done injury, the prob ablo excuse of tho idiot that fired it would have been, "didn't know it was loaded." A Johns river correspondent of the Chehalis Yidette says: It may be regarded as very certain that in the valley of this stream is to be found tho finest body of cedar ia the terri- torj. I measured one tree which was eighty feet in circumference, and such trees are numerous, many of them measuring 100 feet to the first limb. There is a fortune in this timber for those who own it. Tlie Astoria 31arble Works. French Sardine Industry. Of the French sardine industry Con sul Wilson of Nantes, says that it em ployes from 3,000 to 4,000 boats, manned by some 25,000 fishermen. There arc about 200 factories, which employ about 16,000 women and 1,000 to 2,000 men with 3,C00 to 5,000 me chanics, tinners, carpenters and box makers. The coast of La Vendee and Brit tany is the harvest of the sardine fish eries. The fish mako their appear ance about alarcli or April, coming from the south and traveling north ward. The season closes in the south ern -ports about the last of September, and in the northern abou; the last of October. The boats have two masts, which are set at a long rake, hull strung about for drying the nets, and taupalins for housing. They carry a crew of six or seven men, and one can scarcely imagine a more thrilling sight than a fleet of fisher-boats going out to sea on d bright morning, with a fine breeze. Each boat has its net or nets, say 120 feet long and from eight to ten feet in width, or rather depth. It is strung with pieces of cork of proper size, placed at proper intervals on one edge, with corresponding;lcads on the other. The boats having, at one. two or some five miles from shore, struck a shoal of fish, the net is cast, one end being let loose while tho other is made fast to the boat. The arrangement of cork and lead causes the net to assume an upright position m the water, and the boat, with either sail or oar, is given sufficient headway to keep the net free. The fisherman, standing in the stern, throws out the bait, first on one side and then on the other of the net. The sardines are attracted in shoals, and attempting to pass from one side to the other in pursuit of the bait, arc caught by the gills in the meshes of the net, which for this purpose are made small and of fine twine. When sufficient numbers are caught the net is hauled in and emptied, to be again cast. The sardines are sold from tho hoats to the factories by number, so much per 1,000, while they are sold in com merce by quantity, so much per box. Tho boxes are different sizes, and they aro valued according to their cu bic contents. The larger the fish, the fewer it requires to fill a box, and, up to a certain size, the more valua ble they are. The fish grow larger as the season advances, and as they go farther nerth: therefore the northern ports have a large advantage. The fish vary in price according to their plentifulness as well as their size. The catch in a good season will average per boat per day, say from G,000 to 10,000 fish of a large size, and 15,000 to 20,000 of small size. In 1878 and 1870, years exceptionally good, they caught some days even 85,000 per boat. The price paid the fisherman is as uncertain as the number he catches. It ranges everywhere, from 2 to 05 francs per 1,000. The figures of the catch and their prices are changed day by day by wind and weather. The only reliability lies in taking the aggregate at the end of the season, and so determining the average. The average paid to the fisherman was as follews: In 18S0, 35 francs per 1,000; 1881, 35 francs per 1,000; 1882, 38 francs per 1,000. The proprietor will furnish plans and designs when required for all cemetery work, curbing, walls, coping, etc Slate can scamers for canneries. "Wanted. Girl to do general housework.
