--m- C3) Uc 33aili3slorisXL ASTORIA, OREGON: SUNDAY FEBRUARY ST, lhSS Read Cooper'e new adv. Columbia county has a population of 2,500. Thero are about 35,000 cases of salmon still on tho river. Tho Ona crossed the bar going to Yaquiua, at half past six jostsrday morning. A powder explosion in East Portland last Friday severely burned ten Ohinimen. The Oregon went to Bea yesterday afternoon. She took on 325 cases salmon at Astoria. In Portland last Friday morning, Alfred Anderaen was sentenced to be hanged on April 15th. The Kioto takes a new departure, clearing with half a million feet of lumber for Valparaiso. - The iveiw says that the Portland chief of police is willing t5 resign if he bo allowed to tiaruo his successor. The two new steel steamers for tin Sound will cost 300,000 each, and will be "the finest in the world" of their clas3. -The Northwest Trading Company of Portland, are going to build a large cannery on Chilcat Inlet, about 200 miles from Sitka. There will be divine service pn board the ship Jcauie Landles lying at the O. It. & N. Co.'s dock at 4 r. JC, Rev. J. McCormac officiating. An accident to tho machinery of the Columbia caused that vessel to use her sails during tho latter part of her latest trip from here to San Fran cisco. Meeting at tho Y. M. 0. A. room at a quarter to three this afternoon. Song service from Gospol Hymns. Cordial invitation extended to stran gers and citizens. Prof. Cook, of Portland, will be down on the Fleetwood to-day, and will organize a class in vocal music in the M. E. church, at aeren o'clock to-morrow evening. Even Vancouver is to have an "addition." Forty acres of land north of that town were bought last week for $10,000, and will be laid off in lots and blocks, alio same Albecnah. The official investigation into the loss of the Tacoma began last Friday in San Francisco. Captain Korts claims that the compass was wrong, and that the chief engineer made the vessel go too fast. The cable was continued across Lewis & Clarke's yesterday, will bo laid across to Skipanon to-day and by three o'clock thiB afternoon telegraphic congratulations will bo in order from Fort Stevens. Tho world moves. Yesterday's sunshine brought out everyone from the oldest to the youngest inhabitant. With the ex ception of two consignments of cold weather which somehow were shipped up this way, the present winter ha3 been a very pleasant one. The fact is now patent that wheat up the Willamette valley is pretty generally killed, and most of the farmers having sold their wheat, will bo at a disadvantage to get seed. A firm in Salem offered Gen. Nesmith $1.15 per bushel for all tho wheat he had, but he declined, for the reason that he wished to sell it to farmers who needed seed, at SI per bushel. Standard. From D. T. Stanley, president of the Oregon state normal school, we learn that that institution was estab lished at Monmouth, Polk county, by the last session of tho legislature for tho purpose of supplying teachers for the public schools of the state. The faculty consists of six professors and tRfbpri ami ihr PTirnllmont; nf etu.l , . , , . , , , dents already numbers one hundred, Teachers and others can obtain circu - lars by addressing the president of tho institution. The Benton Leader asserts that activity on tho railroad to Yaquina Bay is to commence about the first of April by patting a large forco of men on the work, and official residents .there confidently expect to see the Jine completed and trains running be tween Corvallis and Yaquina Bay next fall. Six thousand tons of "steel Jrads and two locomotives and other material, it is asserted, are at San Francisco, owned and paid for, and will bo transported to Yaquinas soon as possible, all of which wo trust is so. Furnished or unfurnished rooms for rtat. Inauire of Hansen Bros. Cathlamet Items Under date of the 23d a Cathlamet correspondent writes from that busy little burg: There will be eight log ging camps in operation near there this summer and will employ a large forco of mon. F- 3L Warren, who owns the cannery at this place, is making extensiro preparations for tho coming canniug season. All are busy and wo may oxpoct lively timo3 this summer. Washington' birthday w.is cele brated by a grand ball on Candy creek, aud of course ererbody in this vicinity attended. .There was a prize fight on the evening of tho 22d, ona of the most desperate and bloodies fights that ever transpired in this place. Tho contestants were about equally matched. When time was nlled they came to thu scratch in splendid condition , and pre sented a fine spectacle of unde veloped muscular power. Consider able science wa3 displayed by both in pulling over chairs and being helped to their feet. Fifteen rounds were fought; at the end of the fifteenth round they preseuted .such a spectacle that the bystanders parted them. A splendid chance to obtain timber land in Wahkiakum county, W. T. Good land h from one-fourth of a mile to one mile from tide water and lies contingent to Strong's river, and will average one hundred and twenty thousand feet of logs to the acre. For particulars inquire of Judge J. II. Graham or Hon. Tims. Kent at Cathlamet. "Unjust. Tho San Francisco Examiner of ro cent date lias an article on the loss of the Tacoma which is unjust. In speak ing of the dastardly conduct of Des mond, the keopor at the Capo Gregory station, it very properly condemns such cowardice and incompetence as ho exhibited, but it goes on to include all tho life station keepers on the coast as "incapable and incompetent." This is manifestly unjust. As an in stance near home; take the case nf Al. Stream, at North Coyc. Everyone re members tho wreck of the Lamnier law in Shoalwater Bay, in November, 'SI, and how Capt. Stream was in charge of tho life boat that took off the crew. On that night thore was a heavy gale and the breakers were not reassuring to a man, yet he and the gallant crew at command put off and rescued life. For this ho received tho warmest gratitude of the captain, and tho thanks of the British Government in a handsome letter and testimonial sent to him from London through Yico Consul Cherry. On our north west coast are a good many who feel the injustice of such wholesale denun ciation as the Examiner's article in dulges in. Accidentally Shot. Shortly after the Oregon arrived down yesterday morning considerable excitement was occasioned I y tho re port of a revolver in the steerage. Upon inquiry it was found that Jor. Honei had been shot in the right breast, the ball ranging up through the flesh and passing out by the shiTul der. Thus. Hayes, in whose hands the revolver was, claims that the shooting was accidental. Bo was one of a de tachment of soldiers, guarding Honel and others who were being taken to Alcatrar, and was intoxicated at tho time. Honel says ho was lying in his buuk and knew nothing of the guard's actions till the bullet struck him. Both were taken by chief Loughrey to the city jail and will to-day, be turned over to the military authori ties at Fort Canby. Frank Fabrc'.s Oyster antlCb op House. He sees nothing but a solid Eal:tf il . j,u'"s. study." -San - --- mass of little canvas sacks, piled fmiu j floor to ceiling, homely 33 a grocery overstocked with breadstuffs. Thu is the principal vault, aud each f these little sacks contains 1,000 ailvur doilara. There is no gold here. Tnc vault is thirt,-sir feet long, seventeen feet wide aud eight and a half feet high, yet it holdi only 13,000,000 of silver dollars. The gold vaults arc about as prosy, the money being sacked xnd piled in the same manner, each sack containing 20,000. It is aiked, where does all thia money come from? Tho answer is that the sub-treasury this mean, little, inad equate building is tho receptacle for the entire revenue of the government from the Pacific coast west of the Itocky Mountains; from British Col umbia to Mexico. Business of last year amounted fh round numbers to 833,000,000. Naturally it may be asked, why i3 all this money hoarded instead of being out in circulation? Paradoxical as ic may seem, a great deal of it is in circulation. To all interns and pur poses it is passing from hand to hand every day, doing its part in the great game of financial shuttlecock and battlcdoor. It is represented by silver and gold certificates a form much more convenient for business purposos, while tho coin itself is stored in the vaults, away from the depreciating effects of abrasion and from lo3s by other causes. A majority of tho twenty-dollar gold pieces now iu circu lation have lost so much by abrasion that they fall below the standard weight. Thero are in tho sub-treasury over soven thousand half-dollars that have become depreciated simply by ordinary abrasion while in circula tion. This depreciation sometimes amounts to as much as twenty-seven dollars on a thousand. Gold being a softer metal suffers moro from the same treatment. Hence, for this reason, and also because they save time and trouble in handling and are moro convenient to carry, gold certifi cates are fast growing in favor. Be sides there is an advantage to the government in issuing silver and gold certificates. In receiving so many millions of dollars it might bo supposed that an occasional spurious coin or noto would find its way across the counter. So great is this" danger that every piece and every note has to pas3 under tho scrutiny of an expert. People do not realize the quantity of counterfeit silver dollars that are iu circulation. Not a da3' passes that more or leas are not offered at the sub-treasury. Tho assistant treasurer, speak ing of this subject, said: "You would be surprised at tho ingenuity that is displayed in debasing tho different government coius. Ono of the neat est methods employed by those who engage in this species of crime is what is known at the splitting process. This is done by splitting the coin edgewise (probably by means of a fine saw), digging out the inside, filling the catity with metal as near'y as possible tho weight of the gold taken out, and soldering the two discs together again in such a manner that it will pass without suspicion among those who are not expert in detecting frauds of this kind. Fortunately this method of tampering with coin is so difficult in its successful accomplishment that it is seldom resorted to, and coins thus debased are not common. An expert at tho business can take five dollars worth of gold out of a singlo twenty-dollar pieco. A short time ago a S100 noto was presented at the counter. The receiving teller imme diately upon taking it iuto his hand stamped the word f counterfeit" on its face and handed it back. The pro ceeding startled the person who pre sented it, and ho asked the teller, with an air of indignation, why he did it. ''Because the law compels me to do it," the teller replied. The man insisted that the note was good, "but," said he, if it is not good I could havo taken it back to tho per son I got it from." "You can do that still," said tho teller, "and if ho demonstrates that it Is a good noto, you only hare to corns here and get your money." ' COMIflfG. The man did not come back. Perjipnal.
