trms , -r-r Vs X: U) Wit Sails) stcriuu. ASTORIA. OREGON: PRIDAT.... .FERKUARY23.1F83 The Oldest American Town. Santa Ph., New Mexico, is the oldest American town. Next July will be celebrated the o'J3il anni verMiry of the founding of that ancient pueblo. Don Hidalgo Cabeca de Vaca after serving with Narvaez in Pascua de Florida and failing to find the fabled fountain of youth, went westward, and, after many thrilling adventures, was the first European to set foot in the present territory of New Mexico. This was in 1531. Ten years later an expedition under Coronado, explored the country in search of treasure, and nine years afterward the town of Santa Fe was founded. This was only twenty-nine years after the con quest of Mexico by Cortez. James town, Virginia, formerly had the honor of being the oldest town in the United States. Alter Florida was annexed, St. Augustine had that distinction, but since the ac quipjtion ol New 'Mexico, St. Augustine has given place to the city of Santa" Fc in that territory. The citizens of New Mexico have been arrauging for some time for the proper celebration of this anniversary, bnt did not make public their plans until the neces sary funds had been secured. These arrangements have now been completed. The two chief features of the exhibition will be the display of the territory's his torical treasures, and of its material resources. New Mexico is rich in both, especially the former. It contains tribes of Pueblo Indians, living in the same manner as they existed when Columbus discovered America. In recent numbers of the Century Frank Gushing has given some intensely interesting descriptions of the Zunis, of which tribe he i& a in ember by initiation. In addition is the Taos Pueblo, standing as it did four centuries ago. New Mexico also possesses antiquities of the stone age, and also of the Spanish conquest. De scendants of the ancient Spanish families yet reside there, and ttiey will lend many relics. Relics of the old American trappers and scouts will also be on exhibition. A special building will be dedi cated to the antiquities. Another building will contain an exposition 'of the mineral and agricultural nealth of the teiritory. New Mexico's mineral exhibit was the most creditable one at the lecent Denver exposition. The occasion will be timcl attractive, and the contract between the primitive as pect of an ancient people and the roahcaditivneN of the Anglo Saxon nineteenth-century civiliza tion CMinot fail to be interesting:. Tin: Mulidi. or FnUe Prophet of tho Soudan who has captured Cai r , and i making it otherwise url pleasaul for the Khedive, is de scribed as one Mohamed Ahmed, n Donolidit. lie is illiterate, but has studied religion, has been or dained a sheik, nnd has gained a reputation for sanctity by playing the hsrmil. He has increased his influence b' marrying numerous wives among tho wealthy families, keeping within the prescribed number of four by a resort, when necessary, to divorce. In Ma 1S81. he openly proclaimed him xelf to be the prophet foretold by Mohammed, preaching univeal equality of law and religion, with community of goods to all be lievers, and death to all who re jected him. Like most prophets, he was denounced by his own townsmen, who proclaimed him umd. In appearance be is tall and slim, and wears a black beard. He reads and writes with difficulty, is head of a local order of der vishes, and has shown much tact in uniting the discordant tribes. The number of tribesmen who fol low mm is estimated at about 238,000 souls. Ax Evansville couple has been divorced and remarried since Jan. st. An Unfortunate Country. henry George nas neen ice turing in New York before the Nitintnrknlli C!ntnrv- oliiK nn the Irish question. Among other! things he said that Ireland is a, .-rnrA nnnnlrr nut II t-illr inrl if t ' uiuu iruii f iiuvuiiuijj u. w was in the path of our western emigration there would be a rush for it. Its people don't differ much from others and have manv good traits. Even in the western districts, where the destitution is terrible, there is not in the whole 1 world a more virtuous or moral' people. Thev are the most relig-1 ious people in the civilized world. Their priests were for a long time persecuted with their people and have never lost their mutual sym pathy. His religion is to an Irish man synonymous with his country. "Ireland is not a poor or over-populated country. Any one who travels through it will be amazed to find how different it is in t'nis respect from what books have led ' him to believe. Only 15 per cent, of the soil is cultivated, the rest being devoted to grazing." The trouble with Ireland is," he continued, "that the earnings of its laborers are drawn away by a class who add nothing to its wealth. The Lord of Loughcra's income from his estate is some thing like 200,000 annually, which he spends in London or Paris. Everything was made an excuse to raise the rent, and there are instances where, when a family had meat to eat, a child was stationed to give the alarm if the agent appeared lest he should raise the rent in consequence. This is why the Irish habitations never have any attempt at adorn ment. Their inhabitants do not dare to appear in any way other than poor. The distress in Ireland is caused because all that the people earn above their bare living iu good times is extorted from them, and eo when bad times come they have no reserve. There has never been any real scarcity of food in Ireland. Even in the great famine years she was really a food exporting country. The Irish raise pigs, poultry and cattle, but they don't eat, but export them. The system which makes the laud on which people live the property of some one else is the great cause underlying all Irish ajntation." The Washington Post stands ready to discard tho time-honored doctrine of states' rights, when that interferes with its ideas rela tive to judicial proportion. It thinks that "a legislative body in which Nevada can vote down New York, and Delaware can neutral ize Pennsylvania is not the sott of body which, under our theory and plan of government, should as sume original jurisdiction in the matter of taxation.1' A l'ORTiON" of the "United Stales navy has been lost. The United States gunboat Ashuelot has Mink on the China coast. She was a sidewheelcr, built twenty years ago to run on I lie Mississippi river, and is a national loss. Soap and starch having been provided with good places on the protected list, the Washington Post thinks it is only necessary to put a tax on water in order to crush the washing industry out of existence. Rhode Island is excited. The running of a new boundary line between that diminutive state and Massachusetts results in cutting off forty-five acres from Little Rhody. It can illy afford the loss.
