OREGON WEDNESDAY JANUARY 24, 183 "When Louis Napoleon was in the height of his glory as emperor of France, the city of Marseilles presented to 'him a plot of ground, at the time valued at 1,300,000 francs. The emperor built a palace on the ground at an additional expense of 1.000,000 francs. Afterjiig death the municipality brought an action to dispossess Eugenie of this property, but was nonsuited. It appealed the case to the-higher tribunal at Aix, and .was again defeated. Having clearly established her title to the proper!', Eugenie, with a magna nimity truly admirable, has deeded it back to the city of Marseilles. In this act she not only restores the original gift, but includes with it the palace, upon which the municipality has no shadow of claim. The present value of this property jstcstimated at 3.000,000 francs. Goss & Sawyer, shipbuilders of Bath, Maine, have contracts for over a dozen new vessels. The ship-wrights on the Pacific coast have so many contracts for new vcssels-that they are compelled to refuse some good jobs, and yet we hoar'pf the decay of American striping. If we could have Ameri can sailors as wc had thirty years ago it would help amazingly. Alia.
