r r CO i -i.--Ci " If III glx.c iDnilB sttffcni TRANSPORTATION LINES. ASTORIV. OREGON SATURDAY JASUAKY 33, 1S Durability of Cocs Cedai. Tin frst timber of this section cobrsls uf the ieveral ariciies of fir. jfwtice ami hemlock, rod ami wiuu r Pnt Qrlord eudar, with heavy jrroH'th of alder, tnuplu and myrtle along- iho river bottoms. Of these, the Port Orford cedar, so called because the first shipments were made from the port of that . namp, is to be found only in Coos, Curry and the western pait of Douglas count', and it alone, if properly cared for, would be a I source of great wealth to J his seotiou. Its merits are jtijt be coming known to the east, where it will be soon accepted as the best house finishing lumber obtain able. Hard, elastic, durable, and rccevinjj; x high polish, it is not eas-y marred by scratches or itjden laUutis. And now that blwek walnut, owtn to its scarcity, t selling at upwards of S200 per thousand, manufacturers ff usnii ture arc using this wood as a substitute, paying- about 70 per thousand for it. Of its durability oine striking evidences are riven. The sleepers of one of the wlmn'cs here are of cedar, and they are at points where the ebb and flow of the tide would most affect thnni. but after twenty-five years' use they are as sound as when nut in. although other portions of the wharf have been renewed time and time again. Anothor instance (and though fully substantiated, it is recognized that a rivaly o( Tom Oehiltroc of Texas may le suspect od) that a cedar log was sound enough to make first-clas-? lumber after being down over three hundred years, as was shown by the amudatioHS of a fir which grew above it, and which was also cut into lumber. This log was cut up in the mill of E. B. Dean & Co.. .it Marshfield. There is now to be seen a tree eighteen inches in U 'i nve g3y Ulg above a loir of white cedar, v?hich inside the sap is perfectly ionnd and good. Pity the aik had not been made of such timber. It would have remained until now a visible evideneo of the truth of Scriptural history. Neuralgia and rheumatism re tire whenever St. .TacobsOil is in troduced. C0Mfi1ERCEAND IBM PORT OF ASTORIA.
