t' p) SEftc &nil gvstaiaa. AST R1A- OitECiOK SATURDAY ....NOVKMBEIl 25, 18S2 j. f hallo i:a. .S.ditor A Good Sliowim "Vr are in receipt of the eighth annual report of the Portland Board of Trade, a work replete with valuable suggestions and statistic information. A perusal of the book makes evident one fact that the Portland business men are unanimous in an effort to push their city ahead and help it in every substantial way they can. For this they are to be com mended. Twenty years acjo the business men of Chicago began the custom of getting together annu ally and saying "now what can we do to make our city richer and larger than it was a Tear ago," and .the programme arranged by appointed committees was carried out. This is what Portland seems to be doinff. "We see that from a membership of 73 in Sept. 'S3, the Board of Trade now has 250 members, after making all deduc tions from natural causes. The report of the president, Mr. Mac Leay, is concise, yet comprehen sive. He talks business right straight along; and though we can not agree with all he says, yet, in no case does he evince a desire to make any misstatement. "We have seen so much stuff, such utter rot published in advocacy of Portland and derogator- to Asto ria that it is a pleasure to read what a representative man says with the consciousness that he actually believes what he says, and has good grounds for believ ing it. Of course in such pas sages as where he says that by reason of the apparently successful efforts of the Walla Walla to make deep water where obstruction exists, "it is confidently 'expected that no grain ship will be obliged to lighter during the coming season," it is but necessary to "refer him to the fourth page of The Astorian to illustrate how fallac ious such confident expectations were. In the "Report of the Trade and Commerce ot Portland" com piled by the secretary of the board, we notice that the millions of dollars worth of salmon, wheat and flour shipped from Astoria are included in the total, and however gratifying it is to us as an Orego- nian to view the sum total, yet we are of the opinion that a com pliance with the rules of precision manifest in other portions of this able work would have made mention of the fact that a large percentage of the fourteen million dollars worth exported from the Columbia during the twelve months ending July 31st, 18S2, was shipped from Astoria. We fail to see why the car goes of such vessels as the Wallacetown which loaded at Astoria with the most valu able cargo that ever sailed from this coast for a foreign port the Wanlock, and other vessels, should be merged into the "Trade and Commerce of Portland." But, perhaps, we are too critical. Indeed we have been so informed by irate Portland subscribers when cancel ing their indebtedness to "that damned Astorian,'' by the simple but to us unsatisfactory tender of advice; and having been hurt as badly as it is in the power of such parties to inflict, yet we will be magnanimous enough to say that the work to which our atten tion has been directed is an ex ponent of a prosperity in the city of Portland of which we are heart ily glad, and for the continuance of which it has our best wishes. Lieutenant Symons has re cently issued a work of high merit concerning the Upper Columbia, in -which he goes into detail con cerning the geological formation of the country and probable anal ogy of future action with that of 4 the past. On this subject he says: If the theory of the formation of mountain chains bv the aqueo- igneous action taking place in deep deposits of sediment on marginal sea-bottoms is true, it is to be ex pected that at some time there will be another range elevated from the Pacific to the west of the Coast range; and if this latter follows the example of its prototype, the Cascades, it will give birth to lava JoodsJfoverwhelming the Willam ette and "all other vallej's lying between the two ranges. While we extend our sympathy to our friends of the Willamette ki view of the impending calamity that fctogs over them, we would suggest that they can avoid any such disagreeable results by coming down here, the site of the North American London "of the twen tieth century." A Pennsylvania jury has ren dered a verdict which, if not over turned by some meddlesome ap pellate court, will establish the right of every woman in that Com monwealth to determine her own age. This happened in the case of a lady who elected, in an applica tion for life insurance, to be ten years younger than the number of years she had lived. The company alleged fraud in misstatement of age, but the gallant jury decides that a woman's age must be just what she savs it is. NEW TO-DAY Summons.
