SIDCK OF An eastern editor, commenting on the statement that Portland is tho wealthiest cHy of its size in the United States, is ungallant enough to ac count for it by saying: aIt rains for six months there, and the women folks cannot get out to spend the money, and wealth necessarily accumulates." You know these little spindles made of an upright wire about eight inches long, sharp at one end and set in base of iron. People have them on deaks to put letters and papers on, and the other day a gentleman who left a silk hat on a chair in an office chanced to see one of those spindles on a desk and put it under the hat, and the fcl low who thought it would be n good joke to stroll in and, apparently by accident, sit down on that hat and smash it, camo to the conclusion that hclmd exercised fearful bad judgment. He returned from Port land Sunday, and while there talked with the leading butchers, who were most anxious that as soon as through shipments could be made with Port land that our spare beef cattle be shippe I there, offering as high as $50 for four-yoar-olds, and in fact just re- questing that a pi ice 1 sot. There has been no decrease in the consump tion, although the price of steaks and roa3t.s have increased more than double. This h accounted for by the fact that as the supply grows less, and tho consumption per family is less, tho demand increases with the growing population. Mutton sympathetically has taken a rise and is still advancing. With regard to pork there wa3 enough raised in eastern Washington and Oregon for home consumption, but the fanner sold their grain instead of feeding it to the hogs, and porkers are in consequence in anything but good condition, and fat pork will run high. The former cheapness of beef has caused the por :n become habituated to its use, and among that class a painful anxiety exists that instead f its remaining :; staple article of diet it will be classed asja luxury. Already it is as cheap to "eat chicken :it it is choice cuts of beef, but the trouble will be that with the high price of beef and mutton all other articles of food of the flesh, fish nud fowl order will also advance in price. For the hist few years there has existed in the state of Oregon a class of men who wish to monopolize the industries of the state and place white labor on an equality with Chinese. Those men arrived in Oregon poor, and through being the creatures of circumstance have becomo rich. Having arrived at the top of tho ladder, their thought by day and night is to keep the balance as poor and create in our midst a codfisli aris tocracy. Their huo and cry has been the excessive charges of Capl. Flavel for towing over the Columbia bar: making pooplo up-country believe tliat if there was cheap towage they would get a better price for their grain. 2fow that those great philanthro- phists have bought a tug boat and placed her in competition with Capfc r lavel on the bar, they sing another tune, it is the poor pilots cut them down and save the farmer. No word about towing now. If the legislature should be so misguided as to pass the board of trade bill it will not be long before they have incorporated in all charter parties, "employ .our tug or no charter," thus creatiug a greater monopoly, thau ever George Flavel thought of.J In conclusion, if any farmer should visit this section of the country, I would be most happy to point out tol him tho men who make the money in directly out of grain; show him in Portland their 00,000 houses, also coach and pair, which 1 am sorry to say docs not belong to any one river orbar pilot, nor never will at tho rate of pilotage now existing. Nobody gets up a torchlight proces sion; nobody wants to fight; the man with a sack hasn't put in an appear ance; the defeated aspirant for a nomi nation says it's none of his funeral, anyhow; he didn't want the office; told the convention so before it met; wouldn't have run if he had been nominated; wouldn't have qualified if he had been elected, and is of tho opinion that the post of honor is the private station. Potatoes, apples and carrots of fine size and ll-ivor ate not wanting to till this department of our moral and entertaining show, and we may re mark, m pusniiit that to us they con stitute one of its most attractive features. Our literary display chal lenges comparison from any similar institution in the northwest. Tha lesser department of fiction is abh' repre sented by the Congressional Record, sent to us by our good senators. Wo note an improvement in the puzr.lu de partment of that journal, and regret that a general sameness in the other contents of the work preclude more complimentary comment. There are several other minor departments, shells, ferns, etc., that urc sadly in need of classification and labeling, and a massive safe in the corner lends an auriferous air of wealth to the sur roundings that its interior fails to justify. The menagerio department is complete, and when we have made suitable arrangements in reference to our racing calendar and attendant cups and purees, we may be able to announce a fair that will compare favorably with more pretentious cm corns. slroycd or the glands diraj cd.
