Have you seen the comet yet? 'The Sounder'" has been received It is a typographic gem. There will be a vestrv mooting at Grace at church at 7:30 this evening. -It is thought tint Company E. of the 21. r, will be stationed at Fort Canby. The life saving station at the Cape now consists of ciht men, full v equipped. The Cutting Packing company put up G,000 cases of salmon at Cook's Inlet, Alaska, this season. 8,000 centals of wheat went down in San Francisco bay, last Tuesday, by the capsizing of a barge. It is a total loss. At half-past four o'clock yester day afternoon the comet was 37,500, 000 miles from the sun and 123,4&f- 000 from the earth. Havo you trouble in disposing of your goods? Got us to spread some printers ink for yon. Ye have a new supply and 'tis lino. Extended inquiry on the part of the editor of the S. F. Bulletin, gives him data for announcing that it takes 275 pounds of average wheat to make a barrel of flour. Villard's conditional gift of S50, 000 to the state university will prob ably bo accepted; the legislature mak ing provision to raise $5,000 annually for that institution by taxation. Attention is directed to the ad vertisement of Wilmerding & Co. 'a Peruvian bitters. The great sale of this attests its merits. Vm. Loeb is the enterprising agent for this place. The Portland board of trade have got Casson to introduce a fish bill in the Home. ;Tis too early to com ment upon it yet, but its provisions do not seem to be what is needed in the present case. . The Portland is discharging caigo at the -Vlain street wharf. The Jane Porter arrived in yesterday from Ade laide. Tho Banffshire sailed for Liv erpool. The City of Sparta went down to Sand island. . same result A private dipatch re ceived at thi3 office last night, says: Will lose one more to-morrow; the rest arc solid, and will vole for Mitch ell the balanco of the foity day3."' A correspondent of the Salt Luke Tribune, writing from the railroad crossing oi the Kclton stage roan, says: To come, to see, to conquer tho minor diflicnltie.s of life, i.-j a com paratively easy affair: but to conceive, to plan and execute so prodigious an undertaking as the construction of a railroad across the arid plains and through the rocky hills of Idaho ter ritory; to conquer the stubborn lcsist ance. of the vast beds of lava rock, to say nothing of a kind of cement abounding, is an enterprise so stupen dous that none but those who aie daily eye-witnesses to the prosecution and progress of the work can fully realize its immensity. Such an under taking was the Oregon Short Line railroad company. From American Falls (to which point, and u little farther westward, the road is complet ed) to lloise City, and alniou within sight of each other, may be seen hun dreds of construction camps, with their hordes of teams and men, blast ing, plowing, slushing, snaking, pick ing and shoveling, and rushing for ward to completion another thread in the grdat network of American rail roads. It ha3 been officially decided that Ilailcy shall be the terminus of the standard gauge Wood river branch of the Oregon Short Line; this branch will leave the main line at the Little Wood river crossing, about GO miles distant, and is expected to reach Hailey this season, but 1 deem it doubtful, although there are sever.il thousand men on the line, and tho graders are within ten miles and rapid ly approaching. At present, passen gers come by the Utah and Northern to Blackfoot; thence by stage a dist ance of 130 miles. A Pioneer Bell. Astoria Engine Co. No. 1 , are talk ing of getting a new bell. The bell now in ii3e is a pioneer, having done service in this city many years before the arrival of any other bell, for many years calling all and sundry from labor to refreshment at the Astoria House, when that was the popular resort. The bell was presented to the company nearly nine years ago by Mr- Conrad Boelling, and has tolled main a varied stow. alive, and :i great number badly in jured. Tho cargo of cotton was also totally destroyed. The total ioss is nearly $200,000. Many in Ihi. hec tion lemcmber the S10,000 raco bo- tween the llvbat 11. Swindles. Accoidnig to a Chicago street "m kir," the public is so ea.ily gulled that imp(3tera and simpers actually de spise tl'.eir fellow-men for their sheep like stupidity. A man he knew of ran a perfectly square game which was an out-and-out swindle, but whichbrought in the best people in tho town. Ho had a pile of gold and a pile of silver coin. By paying half a dollar a per son could throw dice. If he threw six sixes ho look gold; if six aces, silver. No one ever did it. It was next to an impossibility, and the man raked in several hundred dollars and left. A follow traveling down in California, lately, who had scarcely money enough to buy a few bars of transparent soap, cut the soap in very small pieces, wrapped them in tissue paper and tin foil, . sprinkled thorn with cologne, took a sponge saturated with benzine and arnica, with it he washed the grease spots out of coats and hats that came along, pretending it was the soap, and in three hours, with a glib tongue and a little rub bing, disposed of $3(5 worth of what had cost him almost nothiug. Anoth chap held forth at Bergman & Berry's corner here a few weeks ago, with a skin game whore soap was sold at a dollar a cako, worth about a dollar a barrel, with a "chance'' to win--a blank. A large number of urchins gather every day on the docks to catch tom cod, and the wonder is that some of thorn do not tumble in. Such push ing and squeezing is liable to result some dav in a sad accident. The memorial presented by Sena tor llecd, praying congress to declare tho Astoria land grant forfeited, has passed both housos. We hope there will be no case of "lo3t, strayed or stolen from," speaker's or president's desk ihis time. Attention is directed to the adver tisement of Wm. Howe. He is a practical boat builder of long experi ence, and having recently bought out the extensive, establishment of C. H. Bain & Co., is now prepared to fill extensive orders in his line. rue w. v. statesman says it is rumored that the Union Pacific peo pie havo collected a small army of Montana "roughs" for business in Burnt river canyon, and that a physi cal struggle is on the tapis in that locattty, tho object being the possession of that route. A bill has been introduced in the house authorizing the pilot commissioners to" purchase a steam tug boat for use on the bar. There will bo, apparently, tugs enough if they keep on. Escort No. 2, as good as tho best of them, is coming here. But then it doosn't co3t anything to run a tug. Yesterday was chilly: people in many places doubtless overhauled trunks and wardrobes, and discovered what the merry moth had eaten and bored into, what time the summer goods were daily worn. Soon will come the days of the buckwheat cakes, syrup and flapjax. A correspondent of the Oregonian thinks that there should be no divis ion of the fourth judicial district: that Washington and Clackamas might be added to the third, and thus leavo Multnomah, Columbia and Clatsop. He thinks the judges visits to Astoria are "mostly visits to the seaside and relaxation." The only thing the Orc gonian's correspondent demonstrates is his ignorance of the subject he at tempts to discuss. A Varied Performance.
