Oregon Short Lino.
A correspondent of the Salt Luke
Tribune, writing from the railroad
crossing oi the Kclton stage roan,
says: To come, to see, to conquer

paratively easy affair: but to conceive,
to plan and execute so prodigious an
undertaking as the construction of a
railroad across the arid plains and
through the rocky hills of Idaho ter
ritory; to conquer the stubborn lcsist
ance. of the vast beds of lava rock, to
say nothing of a kind of cement
abounding, is an enterprise so stupen
dous that none but those who aie
daily eye-witnesses to the prosecution
and progress of the work can fully
realize its immensity. Such an under
taking was the Oregon Short Line
railroad company. From American
Falls (to which point, and u little
farther westward, the road is complet
ed) to lloise City, and alniou within
sight of each other, may be seen hun
dreds of construction camps, with
their hordes of teams and men, blast
ing, plowing, slushing, snaking, pick
ing and shoveling, and rushing for
ward to completion another thread in
the grdat network of American rail
roads. It ha3 been officially decided that
Ilailcy shall be the terminus of the
standard gauge Wood river branch of
the Oregon Short Line; this branch
will leave the main line at the Little
Wood river crossing, about GO miles
distant, and is expected to reach

A Pioneer Bell.
Astoria Engine Co. No. 1 , are talk

like stupidity. A man he knew of ran
a perfectly square game which was an
out-and-out swindle, but whichbrought
in the best people in tho town. Ho
had a pile of gold and a pile of silver
coin. By paying half a dollar a per
son could throw dice. If he threw six
sixes ho look gold; if six aces, silver.
No one ever did it. It was next to an
impossibility, and the man raked in
several hundred dollars and left. A
follow traveling down in California,
lately, who had scarcely money enough
to buy a few bars of transparent soap,
cut the soap in very small pieces,
wrapped them in tissue paper and tin
foil, . sprinkled thorn with cologne,
took a sponge saturated with benzine
and arnica, with it he washed the
grease spots out of coats and hats
that came along, pretending it
was the soap, and in three hours,
with a glib tongue and a little rub
bing, disposed of $3(5 worth of what
had cost him almost nothiug. Anoth
chap held forth at Bergman & Berry's
corner here a few weeks ago, with a
skin game whore soap was sold at a
dollar a cako, worth about a dollar a
barrel, with a "chance'' to win--a
blank.

Burnt river canyon, and that a physi
cal struggle is on the tapis in that

A bill has been introduced
in the house authorizing the pilot
commissioners to" purchase a steam
tug boat for use on the bar. There
will bo, apparently, tugs enough if
they keep on. Escort No. 2, as good
as tho best of them, is coming here.
But then it doosn't co3t anything to
run a tug.
Yesterday was chilly: people in
many places doubtless overhauled
trunks and wardrobes, and discovered
what the merry moth had eaten and
bored into, what time the summer
goods were daily worn. Soon will
come the days of the buckwheat cakes,
syrup and flapjax.
A correspondent of the Oregonian
thinks that there should be no divis
ion of the fourth judicial district: that
Washington and Clackamas might be
added to the third, and thus leavo
Multnomah, Columbia and Clatsop.
He thinks the judges visits to Astoria
are "mostly visits to the seaside and
relaxation." The only thing the Orc
gonian's correspondent demonstrates
is his ignorance of the subject he at
tempts to discuss.
