Spedden. our genial county cleric, has made some valuable inventions, several of which he has had patented: among others a meth od of baling a boat by means of tho action of the oars in rowing; and also a skillfully-devised style of rowlock, in which a spring throws and keeps it in place when wanted, while a moment sufliccs to throw it out of gear. But what seem? to us tho most valuable of all his inventions is one on which he has just secured lelteis patent. It is a single-fluked anchor, and .ho folds that when hanging at the bow of a vessel a line can m no wav join. Ooor;o arrived homo Sunday afternoon, having nnde iho trip across the continent by way of the Northern Pacific route Ho looks well after the winter's hard work at Washington. On the trip across Mr. George laid over at various points ini Montana Helena, Boseman, Missoula, j etc. cud he is uf the opinion, decid-j cdly, that completion of the Northern! Pacific will open up a gieat tra le be tween Portland and that section. Montana, he found, was Iaigely set tled by old California!;8; and its busi ness affairs are chiefly in the hands of men who have the prejudice of old acquaintance with California, and would, all other things equal, trade there by preference. The Union Pacific, through its local line, the Utah Northern, has forced enormous tribute for some years past, and the people are looking eagerly for a way of escape from its clutches. Mon tana's trade with San Francisco will be carried on by way of Portland, and Mr. George thinks tint with our ad antage of position we can in time secure it all. Mcrclmnts so far east as Helena expect to do business in this war. Mr. George will remain in Oregi'ii three months, mo3l of the time at his home in this city. Ore- .. m !
