GALLICK. lion of the United States, it is but natural that the sympathies of our people should -be with Ireland in her struggle for justice. The policy of England is and al ways has been purely selfish. She has aimed to -make a large portion of the globe tributary to her great nes'her wealth, her glory. In this policy she has been eminently suc cessful. A little island, not too large for a fair-sized state in our Union, she has extended her pow er and domain to every continent, and made millions in Abia, Africa and America pay tribute to her. "Her morning drum-beat, follow ihg the sun, circles the globe with the martial airs of England." Na poleon said, "The English are a nation of shop-keepers."' He might have said that England herself was a shop at which most of the world was compelled to trade. With a small standing army, as compared with other nations of Europe, Brittania has ruled the sea with her invincible fleets. Her wares and her merchants, support ed by her flag and her guns, have gone wherever gain was to be made. She has fattened on the cream of the woild's commerce. She has been, she is and she will be the very incarnation of selfish ness. She has fought for her trade and is ready, every time, lo defend it. She will strike heavy blows for her right as she mideistands them. But are we justified in condemn ing England for her selfish policy? "Was there ever an unselfish na tion? -Was there over a people on the globe that did not set up -elf-interest as its standard of! right? ITotv long is it since we fought a rather flimsy pretext for war with a weak neighbor in order that we might despoil her of a large part of her territory? And who doubts that, if wc deemed it for our interest Jo enlarge our area, we should go to war with our neighbors and annex them to the Union? The simple truth is, .selfishness has been the policy of all nations in all ages, and England has -i.o-ceeded better than her neighbors because her sons have been more capable than other races of curv ing out that policy. In her present attitude, as re gards the other powers of Europe, England towers above them all. She has fairly shamed them all by taking hold to do unaided, the work that belonged to Europe. The recent speech of Mr. Glad stone on the Egyptian question is kitfiirave, frank", manly declaration that will live in history to con demn the powers of Euiope that have left for England alone the work of testoring order in Egypt. captured. The English loss was 120 men. Another little war is reposed between Turkey and Greece. The Grecian govern ment ha sent ten thousand men to the front. MAItKXKO. In Atoiia.
