The total number of Chinese that came into the Columbia river from Hong Kong, since the 1st of last April up to date, is 9,419; of these, 1,552 came via San Francisco, the rest came direct from China. During the same time 27,418 have arrived at San Francisco. in the Wood river country and be yond are developed at Cokevilie. Soda Springs, Idaho, is the next im portant point and lies 14'J mileR be yond Granger. Track is being laid rapidly and will reach there early in August. Soda Springs promises to lay Manitou and other Colorado re sorts in the shade. It nses3C3 the finest group of mineral springs in Am erica, and is situated in a beautiful spot in Rear river valley, surrounded bj' high mountain ranges. The moun tains are full of largo game, deer and shcepjand trout abound in the streams. It. is an old volcanic region, and some extinct gpyser cones and craters are still in a good .state of preservation.' To Port Neuf canon the line is being graded from Soda Springs. The can on is one of the most picturesque in the west and the river abounds in falls and cascades. Pacing through the canon the railway is being built to Port Neuf station, where it joins the Utah and Northern railt.:ry track The line through to Port Neuf will be opened this fall. In the meantime construction is going on rapidly west from the Hah it Northern toward Wood river and Roi.sc City. On this Hue about forty-live miles of track have been laid, carrying it across Snake river where the bridge is built above American Fall, affordinir a magnificent view, At present the track is being laid beyond the liverat the rate of a mile and a half a day. About five thous'iud men and several thousand teams, are working on the Oregon line, engaged mainly in grad ing west of Snake river. They will endeavor to reach Wood river cross ing eighty miles west of Snake river, early in September. From Wood crossing the constructors propose build ing the Wood river branch northward, into the heart of the Wood river country, to I'ellevue and Hailey, which it is intended to reach also this fall. At the juncture a town has been laid out called Shoshone, four teen miles from Shoshone Falls, whish arc twice the .size of .Niagara, and, next to Niagara the grandest specta cle of a cataract in America. It is expected to make Shoshone an impor tant point for the supply of a rich ag ricultural and stock region besides being the point of departure for tou rists to Shoshone Falls. The Wood river branch runs through a valley much of which is as rich as many of the best of the Rocky Mountain Val leys, and at Rellevuc and Uailcj it reaches the heart of a rich mining re. gion. while the completion of the road will afford a rail outlet to trans port thousands of ions of ore that are being piled up in anticipation of its coming. With a fair winter it is be lieved that the main line, of the Or egon road can be finished to Baker City within a year. Yesterday's Sflle. The saie of lots at auction at Alder- brook, 1)3' E. C. Their rosters bear the law. And as in duty bound your pe nalties of tramps, loafers. beer-gus-M-'r.s will ever pray. etc. zlers and confirmed hoodlums, who find in the lire company an institution admirably adapted to their wants and temperaments. In the engine house they have a safe and congenial rendez vous, where they may swill themselves drunk with beer, smoke opium and insult the lady-passers with peifect impunity. A lire, to the metropolitan volunteer, is the grand occasion for increasing his stock of worldly :is.sels. He is not consumed with the worthy ambition of mastering the lire-fiend. The laurel wreath is won in getting "first water," and his energies hence forth exerted in bearing off tho spoils. To this species of firemen an alarm is an occasion for throwing wa:er anywhere, everywhere, and if nowhere else, mi the non-combustible citizens, lie is characterized with an indexible determination to rniu with water all that the fire does not con sume or his craft and cunning fails to make way with. To him the award ing of "first water'' is far more vital than the existence of whole rows of buildings. Oftcner the spanner and nozzle plays an important part in deciding the momentous ques tion while the fire loaps and laughs in their angry faces. Rut tho time of all times dear to the heart of a metropolitan fireman is election time. Then it is that he swells in free beer, free lunches and ready money. Then it is he makes his hereditaiy foe -tho lax-paying citizen fee! the pitiable insignificenco of his in fluence in the civic economy. For our tircmau votes votes with a per sistency that brings .substantial iccog nitionat the hands of Hon... II. Wire puller or .Judge F. R. Logrollor. Who would not be a metropolitan fireman escape noil and mad taxes with other immunities! The inducements an ir resistible, and Portland Htiliars to-day under its greatest evil a volunteer fire department! The mistake the Antoria buys made was in not reckoning their guest. They forgot who they were to enter tain not gentlemen nor gentlemen's sons, but the riffraff from the streets of a city, on whose vitiated and de praved tastes the simple and innnly exercises of a country fete-day fell llat and insipid. They should have pn vided entertainment worthy of their guest. Particularly the worthy trio who seem to be ." outraged and .scan dalized by the resolution in question. Hd Astoria brought forward a five gallon keg of beer and placed a salmon can in the hand of each of her three distinguished risitors, she would have escaped the scathing rebuke at their bauds, and would not to-day be langu ishing under tho stigma of inhospi- tality. Why, they did not even havo an opportunity to make themselves conspicuous, and were so shamefully ignored as not to havo been been in vited down to Hill's to witness a special prepared piece of rich and racy scenes. They might, at least, have been presented with a gold watch, apiece, but no, not even thnt bauble to honor their royal augti3t presence Horatio W. dishing, Esq., Ex-Ass. engineer; Hon. Chas.
