"A Hlcrher Eilnr.il Ion." , ; Nearly eveiv paper that comes .a iti lAclr lio crtti1 tn iiii id i , . ., , " " about "education, and a good many articles upon that subject , . I are practical illustrations of its necessities. Some of. the writers are disposed to be content with "the three R's,'' and contemn as unnecessary and impolitic any at tempt to enlighten "the masses," evidently implying that the n space should be between the "in'' and the "a," rather than the "e5 and thi :m.' Others call for results, and a very few want to know wiiat "good," education is; in general .the editorial opinion seems to be that the rising generation stands in danger of being educated too much, and that nothing but the alert discernment of those gentle men can aveit the impending peril. It has long been acvepted as in controvertible that thf best phil osophy, is a contented mind, the best statesmanship, self-control; the best theology, a pure and beneficent life; the best medicine, cheerfulness and temperance; the best art, painting a smile on the brow of childhood; the best edu cation, the applying the faculties of the mind so that they ma3' act in accordance with natural law. Whether the individual believe in Calvin or Darwin, he lias beeu educated to very little purpose un less the principles of correct life have been fixed in his mind; unless he have the true conception of civ ilization. This true education gives: to this, ''higher education approximates. The only question worthy con sideration is "what good is it?"' It may be pertinent to inquire what "good"' is. If to eat and sleep; wax fat and lusty; to move as animate clods and finally sink as do other animals to the em brace of earth; if that, and noth iug else, be "good" then it might be well to pause before making any attempt to do otherwise. But those who recognize that mere existence is not all of life will readily see that that is "good" which leads to make man wiser, better or happier. This education does, and if the piemisc be accept ed the corollary must follow. Looking upon life in general, we notice that the individual will in an' given case do that which he thinks, on the whole, will give the most pleasure and the least pain, with the. minimum ninotmt of risk to himself. Accepting this premise it. is evident that, no matter how erratic the individual's actions may seem; however great the amount of trouble and mis takes that ensue; yet the. sum of human delinquencies is less than if men did differently, believing by nature what they are. Whittling this down to a finer point, it is evident that the present order of things is the best possible under the circum stances. Pope arrived at the same conclusion, but by a different road, when he said "whatever is, is righ't." The trouble with Pope's ultimatum seems to be that as whatever is, supercedes what ever was, tkorefore whatever was, must, of necessity, have been wrong; a conclusion that few are disposed to concede. The whole matter resolves into a question of fitness and existing necessity. "'"So'mb one who signs lmnsolf "Old Pilot," writes to the Portland Standard as follews: "Xow that 1the general govern men! has appro priated the sum' of one hundred thousand dollars for the improve ment "of the Columbia river and . bar, .the question now arises what are the engineers going to do with - it.r It is a fact known to the old pilots on the river that there is less vater on the river bars titan theie was before the U. S. A. had any- thing -to do with them, They hrt thrown away a few thou- sands on the bar this season without doing any good, and proven to everybody with common sense that scraping is not ! a success. Columbia river bar , cannot bo improved short of mil- : lions of dollars and it is useless to i throw away anv moie money on it until an uppromiiiliou . can hr ' le iind.' In the meantime :i dieder can be. . .. . - , ... , MUllt Mlllilul l' IliU (.- 11U UUilU- in at San Francisco that will' remove 1000 cubic yards per hour, j With a machine of Mich a deign, the river can be kept open lo As toria so that a ship can load to 20 feet the year round. There should be no more money thrown away on surveys, wing dams, fancy yachts and picnic parties, as the people j lake no silicic in anything of the kind, but want the money used uhnreitwiiido the most 'good.- SEW TO-PAY.
