The fines in the police court for tho current month aggregate over $400. Iowa has given a large -majority in favor of a prohibition claue in the constitution. The Portland board of education hut elected a corps or 58 teachers for the ensuing term. Fritz Porlaisc, of St. Johns, has had 1000 stolen from him, hut can't prove who did it. The frame of the new Presbyte rian church shows up among the sur rounding residences and foliage. The next session of the grand lodge of 1. O. G. T., will be held here on the second Tuesday in June, 1880. Tho Columbia went to sea yester day morning; the Oregon was not able to make the entrance until 8:ft0; last evening. According to programme, Guiteau is to be hanged at 1 v. m., to-day, which would correspond to 0.43, this a. r., in this longitude. - "Messrs. Stockton, Worslcy and other active workers, were busy in front of tho engine houses yesterday, getting up Hags, decorations, etc. The Britixh barks Itainbovv, Dnko of Connanght, and Corina; and the Uritish ships Mervvamjeo Framjee, JBallochmylc and Seleno have ai rived ont. It is thought that by the 1st of August the lines of tho IT. P. 11. R. will be completed and in operation to Rock Island, 520 miles east of Port land. Mrs. Scovillc, Guitcau's. sister, is in Washington. Folks who know her say she is liable to shoot the president for not reprieving her brother Haidly. There will be divine service at the Congregational church uoxt Sun day, the Rer. T. V. Walters, lately from the east, officiating in Astoiia, for the first time. A San Diego, Cal., dispatch says 'John Ivy was shot at Julian last Tuesday, by Jay Hush, and instantly killed, and is now in jail at San Diego." What for? Yesterday morning, says tho Standard, tho driver of No. l's engine and his assistant hitched up the team and hauled the engine out on tho sidewalk in eleven seconds exactly, from the time tho gong struck. Three's cannot take their engine to Astoria, but the Standard thinks they will probably have an opportu nity to run for tho prize notwithstand rog, in which caso "ehako cm up, boys?" "Give it to 'cm!" "Start your water!" "Hit 'im with the wrench!" "Put that pipe don nf and. other similar phrases will probably be heard. Rescue No. 2, are fixing up their quarters in gay style for tho reception of their- visiting comrades tin next Monday and Tuesday. Tho oid h md engine has been brought out, jud the quarters usually assigned to that an tiquated piece of fumituro will be made to do duty as headquarters of tho commissary department during the boy's stay here. That old engine is held in high re spect, not for any special value or beauty, but like a good many other old articles in this life, 'for the good it has done." It w.is in 1SC9 that our city fathers concluded that they could no longer get along with a bucket brigade, and decided to buy a hand engine. Capt. Flavel, who was m the council at tho time, bought the engine in Portland, from No. l's, and when A. 15. Uallock, the engineer in charge, brought down the 'maslicen," tho whole town tinned cut. It was a regular holiday; Astoria wasn't quife as big in those days as it is now, aud the arrival of an engine for the city was quite aneent. After the usual outbursts of demonstrative welcome, it was considered in order to give the engine a "fair shake," so all hands manned the brakes, and evciy able- bodied iran in tonn "bore down," to see now sne worked, water was thrown 105 feet, and it was consid ered that the citv had well invested its $800. Ttw, hundred feot of leather hose Here purchased, but all the grease iu Oregon couldn't make that hose pliable enough to be of any use. Many old lesidents will remember the lively chase there used to be around Arrigoni's coiner to get the engine to an incipient blaze, and the sight of the old concern as she stands alongside the city h.iil, awakens a good many recol lections of the d.ijs when Astoria only had 500 inhabitants. Tho venerable 'limine man tub," which was built in lloton in 1857, will be .it-corded a place of honor in Tucsd.-ij'a procession, and though our modern steam engines, the Amoskeag and Silsuy, lesplendent in the sun in all the glitti-r of polished machinery will be the cyno'titc of most eyes, yet the old hand engine will be viewed with iuteiest by many a one who grabbed her and st.u ted on a li cly gallop to amidnight bla.se jcua ago. Queen of the Pacific. Tho new steamship Queen of the Paciiie, which was built by Mossic. Cramp & Sons, of Philadelphia, for the Pacific Coast Steamship company, to ply between heie and San Fran cisco, is now twenty-one days out, and should reach San Francisco in the latter part of September. She is S3G feet long, oS.7 feet beam, 22.0 feet hold, 30 feot of aw ning dock, i 2,727 tons custom houe iiieasiiicincnt, has 1,200 tons dead weight cargo capacity, or sixteen feet draft. She is half brig rigged, with iron masts in ono piece, and is well canvascd. Her rate of speed will average sixteen knots per hour. She carries eight boilers, and will consume about sixty tons of coal per day. The propeller wheel was made in England at a cost of $15,000, and is sixteen feet in diameter. The total cost of the ves sel will reach in the neighborhood of $500,000. Capt J. T,. Alexander is in command of the ship, with 0. Erickson as chief ofticer. One of the most pleasant excursions of tho comiug Fourth will be that given by Columbian Engine Company No. 8 The steamer A. A. McCiilly will leave here at 11 a. m., on the 3d, for AMoiia, and on the Fourth excur sionists will attend tho firemen's tour nament there, leaving home at C o'clock on the morning of the 5th. The fare for tho round tup will be $2.50, thus giving all a chance to en joy a nle.vant trip aud pend the 4th by the sounding sea at a very moder ate outlay. There can be no doubt but that tho excursion will ho largely attended, -is No. '.i is a favorito com pany and one of the most efficient in UlV VICI'lVl UlllJlt. L1IU fillip Wl tu iw a large expense iu puuhaiing and keeping horses, and their exchequer is in a depleted condition, and the nu merous friends of the cmiipmy have expressed their intention of making the excursion a grand success finnn cixlly and otherwise. The above is from the Standaid. That paper and the Oregonian, and also tho Salem Statesman have been kindly towaid the cntei prise of our Astoiiiboys from the stait, and de ceive praise theiefor. One Portland arrival, speaking of it to ono of our loading merchants yesterday, said "Doesn't it bother you folks down herel" "Oh, no," was the good natnred response; we don't notice it much in tho river; of course, such a freshet must be troublesome to parties living on creeks in the interior."
