The Wanlock, which goes to
London direct, has on 0,280 cases of
salmon from the Astoria Packing com
pany, 3,500 from tho Cutting Packing
Co., 5,000 from John West, and 4,000
from Ym. Hume. She also carries
0,458 sacks of flour.
Tho noxt Oregon legislature will
stand 1C Republicans to 14 Democrats
in tho Senate, and SG Republicans to
23 Democrats in tho House. There is
a tie in Yamhill county on tho Repre
sentative, which will bo settled by
special election on the 1st prox.

every steamer. They all seem to be

he was conscious of a gradual sinking
and wasting away of all his physical
facilities. He had been an earnest and
diligent worker, and in his zeal fre
quently over-taxed his strength, and be

serve the comnionsymploms with which
he was afflicted, thus peimittiug the
work of destruction to go on unheeded,
llul the end finally came in a most per
emptory manner. Shortly befoie his
death he wrole a letter the last one he
eer indited in which Ins speaks as fol fel fol
eows: A belief that death is near affects
different minds dillorently.but probably
all who are in a fair condition of phys
ical and menial strength instinctively

Tho recent sad and sudden death of
Hon. t'larkson X.Potter is one of the
most serious warnings ever given iu the
long list of innumerable cases of fatal
neejleet. It is not sufficient to say that
man v other brilliant men, including Ev
erett". Sumner. Chase, Wood, Wilson
and Carpenter, were swept away by the
same iatal trouble. The ouestiyn is.
were these men sufficiently caieful of
their health, and could they have been
saved? The Albany 1)-;ii. in speak
ing of Mr. Potter's sudden illness and
death, says:

Kdward V. Itook. a member of the Now
York stock exchange, was doing busi
ness in Wall street, Xew York. He had
eervthing to encourage him and make
life happy, mil was tlie victim oi unac
countable uneasiness. His experience.
as described by one who knew, was as

occasions when he had the greatest rea
son to feel joyovs be was irritable and1
haunted w il h strange feelings of discon
tent, lie endeavored to check these
feelings aud appear pleasant, but it !
quired a great effort to do so; after

morbid mood. This leeling continued
for a number of mouths, (when he le
eaine conscious of an added sensation
ot lassitude. He was tired eon when
resting, and although experiencing no
acute pain, had dull, aching seiisalions
in his limbs and various pails of his
body. Shortly afterward his head began
to ache mo-t lrequently and his slomach
failed lo digest piopi'ilj. J'.eing told
that he was. suffering from malaria, he
consulted an eminent physician who in
formed him that his kidneys were
slightly affected, and gave him medi
cine lo resloio them, lint he grew
worse instead of better. He then con
sulted other eminent doctors ot another
school and was informed that he had a
brain difficulty somewhat in the nature
of a tumor, but in spite of all efforts to
(he contrary he continued to grow
worse. At this tune his condition was
tcriiblc. What were at first simple
svmptoms had developed to terrible
troubles, lie was flushed aud feverish,
constantly uneasy, mid yet always
weary. Jic bail an intense aniwuiio one
day and cry little the next. His pulse
was irregular, his breathing labored,
and everv moment of existence was a
burd'-n. These disastrous sjmptoms
continued, his fire and Imdy became
discoloicd. his heart was irregular iu its
action, and his breath came iu .short.
convulsive gasps. He grew constantly
worse, notwithstanding me ut.im-t pre
cautions of his friends and finally died
in the gieatest agony. After his death
an examine ion pis to its actual cause
was made when nis brain was found to
be in a, periect condition, and the teasoii
of his decease was of an entiiely differ
ent character.'
The experiences which hae been ci
ted above all had a common cause and

neys. In the ease of Mr. Itook the ex
amination after death, while showing
the brain to be in perfect condition, re
vealed the terrible fact that he was the
iclim of a slight kidney trouble, which
had gone on unchecked, until it resulted
in acute P.righl's disease. The leading
physicians and scientists of the world
