A Hero.
Ik the general note of gratulation
over their release from their fear
ful prison of the seven Comstock
miners, at the sadness all feel at
the loss of the two brave men who
sacrificed their lives in the effort
to rescue, their fellows, the heroism
of Jack Yandeusen, the miner who
made his way alone to the impris
oned miners to tell them of the ef
forts beinj made, of the relief that
awaited them, is deserving of more
than passing mention. Few, says
the San Jose Mercury, who read
the short report of this perform
ance will at all appreciate either
the perils hazarded or the heroism
that grappled with them.
One must at least have been
through thee tunnels and drifts,
when the mines were in their hol
liday attire, when the mighty genii
that science has invoked holds the
demons of these cavernous depths
in check, to even imagine the
situation when scalding waters and
poisonous vapors, breaking their
bounds and bursting their chains,
sweep and swell through these
gloomy chasms.
The world never wearies of de
scribing the fierce charge, nie
deadly strife of the battle field
where in the bright sunlight man
struggles with man for the mastery.
The Old Guard at Waterloo, the
"Charge of the Six Hundred," has
been again and again told in po
etry and prose; but no man who
fought at Waterloo, no trooper
who followed Cardigan at Balak
lava, cither in the horrors that sur-
rounded, the dangers that attended,
cr the purpose to be accomplished,
can compare with the achievement
of tins Comstock miner.
It was over two thousand feet
below the surface of the earth
and fourteen hundred feet from
this depth that his journey was to
"be made. It was through waters
brcasl high and scalding hot. It
was through vapors, a breath of
which was death. His "iiard an
apparatus that might fail him at
any instant. His pathway, a tiench
bestrewn with floating timbers
seething,- slim' and horrid dan
gers in every form about him; in a
darkness that might be felt: where
to stumble was to perish, to halt
was to die. Through fourteen hint
drcd fpet of all this he made his
lonely way. He knew the full
measure of his danger, for the two
who had essayed that fearful jour
ney he knew must have perished,
and the one who had but passed
the the threshold had returned a
raving madman.
Upon every hand there was
death, and death in its nio-t revolt
ing forms. Death in the seething,
scalding waters that surged about
him; in the poisonous vapor that
enveloped him. Death in the
corpses that he well knew were
iloating at his feet.. Death and
dead men, perhaps, to gteet him
should he reach life prison house
of his fellows. It was with all
this about and before him that
Vandcusen started upon this
dreaded expeditior.
No warrior upon the bloodiest
battle field, no soldier leading u
forlorn hope ever met danger so
beset with horrors, or faced death
with such desperate odds against
himself.
The price for which all this was
risked not fortune, nor fame, nor
glory but the hope, slight to all
others as a gossamer, that he might
at all this risk? with all this sacri
fice, restore to their homes his im
periled comrades.
There are Pantheons in which
the rulers of- men will be ever
apotheosized there are pedestals
to be crowned with the statutes
alike of tho butchers and the
benefactors of men there are
poems and songs that for all time
will commemorate the deeds of
valor of devotion, and of sacrifice;
but when real heroism shall be
lonorcd the-true hero shall he
crowned first among the foremost
shall be found the Comstock miner
Jack Vandeusen'.
Tiie names of those members of
tho judiciary committee of the
house of representatives who think
that congress has the power to de
clare lapsed land grants forfeited,
have been published. The names
of the others who favor continuing
ad infinitum tho Astoria land
grant, ought to bo published. Xo
one of them, we hope, will ever be
a candidate for the presidency of
the United States.
Co-geessjia- Yoirxo, in his
decoration address at Cincinnati,
reversed the usual order, and in
stead of recounting what the sol
dier had done for the country, un
dertook to prove that the country
hud done its part for the soldiers.
The Marysville Appeal savs that
a drayman of that city owns tho
identical wooly horse which Fre
mont rode to California in IS 17,
the animal now being about thirtv
eight years old.
Tin: steamship Canopus, from
Hongkong, which we have been
expecting here for some time is
said to be on the way to San Fran
cisco.
It is is said that Gen. Slieiman
is about to retire, in which event
Sheridan will become irener.il ot
the army.
The immigration at Castle Gar
den for May reached the unpre
cedented total of 90,019.
