The Salrnnn Fisheries.
Owing to a disagreement, three
years ago, between the fishermen
and canneries, no fith were caught
for four weeks previous to the end
of the fishing time, which extended
the close season that much longer.
The result of such extension was
apparent in 1881 by the greatly
increased run of tho salmon. In
1880 over ten million pounds of
fish were caught, and in 1881 the
catch was estimated to bo 'over
fifteen million pounds, an increase
of 50 per cent. This year itjs
supposed there will lie a larger in
crease. This is confirmatory of
the wisdom evinced in the enact
ment of statutes guarding the fish
during the clo3e season. The
Fish Commissioners have for ten
years obtained statistics from the
canneries of the quantities of fish
caught. On the strength of this
information the Fish Commis
sioners have been able to conduct
their operations intelligently. The
supply of fish has been so largely
increased by these intelligent
efTorts that new canneries have
been able to start, and the older
institutions have been able to in
crease their capacity and product.
It is jut as necessary to the wel
fare of the canneries as it is for
the guidance of the Fish Commis
sion that all the information in the
possession of canners and fisher
men concerning the catch and
movements of the salmon in Sac
ramento River and its tributaries
should be freely communicated to
the Commissioners. The very ex
istence of the canneries depends
upon a proper and systematic con
tinuance of the supply, which ex
perience has proven must be arti
ficially maintained.
The above from the San Fran
cisco Bulletin, especially the last
sentence, is suggestive of a matter
of the gravest concern to c.iiinery
men on the Columbia. Reports

daily reach us, statin" in substance
that the catch for th" season of
'82 is nothing like what it was for
the corresponding scaviii of '81,
and that unless a change in the
supply takes place vi-ry soon the
pack of salmon for 'S2 will bo an
extraordinary light one.
How to prevent a recurrence of
those "light" years is the problem.
Whatever the cause it is evident
that the disastrous effect of such
cessation would be that one of tho
main factors of Astoria's pros
perity would be seriously ciippled.
Artificial propagation is the only
remedy at command. The history
of all piscioulture shows that arti
ficial hatching is the one thing
that can be relied upon to keep
up the supply of fond fish in any
locality that is thoroughly fished
every season. low to go about
it is the next point. It is not our
piovince npr our purpose to go
into recounting the causes of the
failure of the Clackamas hatchery;
even now it is claimed that that
enterpriso wa not a failure. If it
has demonstrated that fish can be
artificially propagated in the Co
lumbia rher it certainly was a
success as a starter. Tho only
parties to not in this busines are
thecannery-mon themselves. Na
tional aid may be invoked, state
aid may be called fer: it would bo
a good idea to make an effort to
get either national or state aid,
but " while the grass is growing
the horse i-. starring," and delay
in such a matter is fatal to the te
sults that must accrue to prompt
action. We believe that con
certed action on the part of the
cannerymen who have their money
invested in the business and who
are directly concerned in the mat
ter, will result in the establishment
of a liatchery in some eligible
point that under intelligent super
vision could be made to. produce
results commensuiate with the
money expended. All this thing
wants is a leader. " Who will start
the matter coing.
Stanley In Africa.
Stanley is said to be tnuliing a
success of his exhibition across
equatorial Africa. He started up
the Congo river, moving from tho
west coast eastward, in the fall of
1879; and a dispatch by way of
Paris announces that he is well ad-
vanced on his rOad to the other
side of the continent. This expe
dition is in many respects the most
important that has ever been
undertaken, as its purpose is main
ly commercial; and it is hoped to
open tho vast interior of Central
Africa to the trade of tho world.
Stanley is .not traveling an alto
gether unknown path. Living
stone and Cameron and Stanley
himself have been over agood deal
of the ground, and he has the ad
vantage of previous discoveries in
mapping out his course. Before
the close of the year he ought to
emerge upon the east coast and
bring with him full information as
to what are the prospects of bring
ing the region into conmercial re
lations with civilized nations.
