Dishes With Medicinal Proprieties. : In former days "spring fever was looked upon as another term for laziness, and our ancestors re garded with open suspicion a com plaint which had for its principal symptom a total disinclination to bodily activity. But we, wiser in many respects than were our forefathers, have learned that the feeling of lassitude with which so many persons suffer in spring, the tired, worn-out sensation, is really a disease, not serious in itself but decidedly uncomfortable, predis posing the system to become the victim of more dangerous ailment and'should be treated as a disease. Yielding to it only makes it worse; the more you lis down, the less you feel like getting up or making any sort of exertion; food palls upon your appetite, and going to bed worn out you rise in the morning still not rested. In f icr. it is a mild form of acclimat ing fever, in which the physi cal system adjusts itself to the change from winter to summer a fever from which one person ma' suffer much and others not at all. As in many other cases Nature provides her own remedies. "Exercise and proper diet is the cure fur it. Tonics arc valueless except as they act on the liver and improve the appetite. The juice of the lemon, taken without sugar, before breakfast, is a sovereign remedy lcr biliousness with many people. Indeed, vegetable acids are often medicinal, and pickles me by no means as pernicious as they are popularly supposed to be that is provided they arc pure. Sulphuric acid vinegar, and pickles greened with copperas, are, it is scarcely necessary to say, rank poison to any stomach save that of an ostrich. But home made pickles, in which the ingre dients are hbovc suspicion, arc rarely hurtful, unless used to ex cess, and we have known of in stances where children who had been forbidden pickles all their lives have had acids prescribed for them by physicians as neces sary to health. But acids, like sugar and salt, should be taken in moderation, not as a strong diet. "Salads, "spring greens" as old fashioned folks used to call them, aro invaluable in spring dietics. Spinnach, lettuce, kale, etc., are all medicinal as well as toothsome dishes. In the southern states turnip tops are a popular dish for eaily spring, and many house wives insist upon their use as a sanitary measure. They act di rectly upon the liver, and arc an excellent remedy for bilhousness. In the late winter, i. e., in the lat ter part of January or early in February, the turnip patch in which some roots have been left to stand for the purpose, u; cover ed over with brush to protect the undergrowth, which soon gets up under such shelter. This, boiled with bacon, is the famous "bacon and greens" of southern dinner tables, and is a slightly bitter but not unpalatable vegetable. Radish tops are the nearest approach to it which we have ever found in northern markets, although dande lions liavo much the same prop erties. Watcrcresses, also, are good for the health, and act as a pleasant stimulant to the appetite- Many persons eat them with no season in"' but salt; others prefer them dressed as a salad with vinegar . and oil. In France lett.icc is eaten when the plants are no big ger than a silver dollar, dressed in vinegar and oil. For thoso who prefer a mayonnaise, the following reliable; recipe is given: Mash the yoke of four liard-boilcd eggs L.,,1 r,;.. ; ,iipm thornuirhlv one , . , , , .;., , ,.'uv;ii iBoiv&puuiuui vi muauju.iuu I n tablesnoonftil of salt, stir in very slowly half a teacupful of fresh olive oil, adding it drop by drop until the mixture is smooth. Add to the strained juice of a iemon enough clear vinegar to mike half a cupful. Turn this slowly into the dressing, stirring all the time. If this makes the dressing too thin, do not use all the vinegar. Do not pour the dressing over the lettuce until ready to serve it, or, better still, snrve the dressing in a saacebowl and let ovOry one help himself. If you think it lacks mustard or pepper, they may be added to taste. If the former ingredient is needed take it dry iu a cup and mis with some of the salad dressing, then stir it thoroughly into the whole. For people who dislike oil, but ter may be used instead, taking half a cupful and creaming it very light, then mix into a paste with the effffs. Slewed prunes are among the best of gentle laxative-, and ued frequently at tills season of the year will frequently ret as the traditional "ounce of prevention" and avoid the nr-cesshy of more, disagreeable medicine. Before stowing they should be soaked in water until they plump out, other wise they will present a shriveled, withered appearance. An Opposite View. Astoria, .May 10, 18S2. Editor Asteriax: I heard lhn addtesscf Mr. Fen ton last evening on the political issues of the day. Free trade opposition to our protective tariff laws was the great burden of his song. He repeated some of the hundred or more arguments of the "Oregoniau'" newspaper of the past year. lie even went into details, and told us how much per cent, everybody in the whole United States is taxed for every little article of clothing, food, con venience or utility; and his state ment was that all these aiticlesare taxed from 33 to 100 per cent. Now, on the face of that state ment, it would appear that the people of the United States are tho worst-taxed people in lite whole world. If such is the ease, how does it happen thjt all the poor people, and many of the well-to-do and wealthy people of every nation on the earth, are in great numbers leaving their own coun tries ard coming to this country to stay and to live here? Why are they so anxious lo come beic and be taxed so enormously? They do not come blindly, or upon tho advice of sharper, swindlers, or taxgatherers, but upon the ad vice of their friends and relations, who have come here years before and have had a year or more ex perience of our burdensome taxa tion; yes, and of pur active and lucrative business of all kinds, and they find that, notwithstanding the so called "great taxation' of our imaginative free trade politicians, still this is the best country under the sun for poor people. They find that all this noise, bluster and buncombe about tariff taxation is nonsense, nothing cIm-; for every article of manufactured goods used in the United States has gradually become less and less in cost every five or ten years, or every year since the war cf the revolution, when we gained our independence of Great Britain and our right to build and run manu facturing establishments- cf any and every kind the prohibition of which by the mother country was the chief cause of the war. You will remember, Mr. Editor, that England, prior to 177G, not only i forbid the colonies to manufacture the various articles nepded in all affairs of life, but compelled them to buy of England, and also to stamp many articles used with an cxponsis'e revenue stamp, the cost of which went int.- the tav gather er's coffers. After the war of the re volution and the experimental period of the "Confederation" (about the close of Washington's second administra tion), under the advice of wise men of the nation, Congress pass ed a tariff law, levying a light law at first, generally less than 10 per cent. From that time to this, this tariff tax has been fluctuating, sometimes higher and sometimes lower, as the views of Congress have from time to time changed; but, generally, the per cent, of tariff has been raised. In the course of time it was found that import ers of foreign dutiable merchandise would invoice their goods very low probably much less than cost in the foreimi country so as to make the tariff tax as low as possi ble. On that account, about 181', Congress made the tariff duties "specific" so many cents or mills or dollars per pound, per yard, per foot, per ton, etc. So, fifteen years ago, when steel rails cost SlyO or more per ton in England and sold here for 170 per ton or more, tho duty was made 2S per ton. That was less than 2'i per cent. Now, in consequence of the great improvements in the manu facturiug of steel. cau?ed partly, er mostly, by the enterpiise of American manufacturers and the great- demand, for the rails, the price is down to $50 or G0 per ton in this country, and the 8'28-pcr-ton duty i". near i0 per cent of the cost here, or about 80 to 100 per cent, of the cost in Eng laud. That is how it happens that the duties now arc, in some in stances, from 50 to 100 per cent., as Mr. Fen ton and the Oregonian state it. But what have they to say about the great reduction in the price of steel rails, and every thing else, in consequence of our tariff laws or protective tariff, if that suits them any bettor? This much, 1 think, is ret tain, and a vast majority of the people of the United States think so too, that all manufactured articles taxed by the tariff laws and made in the United States are from 30 to 200 per cheaper now than they were before we had tariff legisla tion and manufacturing establish ments encouraged thereby. We had better let vroll enough alone; so Contrres and t!-e people think. This is not a tenth of what may be said in favor of tariff laws, but enough for this time. American.
