Columbia River Scenery.
Saturday afternoon found us
on board the Fleetwood, with h
few spare hours not likely to be
broken in upon by the cry, of
"copy." The afternoon ttes per
fect, and due attention having
been given to the commissary de
partment, the scenery along the
route engrossed our attention.
"There is a tide in the aifairs of
men that taken at the flood leads
on to fortune; " there is a tide in
the Columbia river that taken at
the ebb holds back a steamboat.
The rippling wive", that showed
like molten silver in the slanting
rays of sunlight, were sombered
here and there by screat patches of
cloud shadow, and those gather'
ing masses of vapor rolled the:r
stormy folds around the moun
tains to the nortli and sent sudden
showers" down that in turn threw
rainbows in profusion to the east.
The sails of the lisher fleet gleam
ed brightly on ever- hand, and
wood scows, log rafts and steam
boats cave the practical side to
this picture of busy industry.
Rounding Tongue Point the seen
ery to the northeast was surpass
ingly grand. The trailing w realhs
of mist swung into hidden ravines
and left the skies above glowing
with a warm light, the great forests
in vivid emerald roe sloping to
the far-off Cascades, that "seemed
to recede afar in Time's remotest
blue as we advanced. The gleams
of gold and purple that fctreaked
the green rnd shadowy entrance to
the ncirer windings of the shore
line shone brightby on th carpet
of mos and wild flower nature's
volumes, bo'iud in gti 11 and gold,
and open to be retfi by every
pasber-by. E ich turn of the
river bring, new beauties in
sight, and a the boat runs closer
to the Territory side, many minor
points of beauty show out from the
bewildering wealth of gorgeous
natural scenery. Some thirty miles
above Astoria is a sight that, view
ed as we saw it, from the deck of
the Fleetwood below, is most im
pre&ive. Like the buttresses of a phrantic
tower rise great columns of basalt,
gray and grim, gashed and seamed
by the tiro and ice of rcons of long
gone ages that wrought such visi
ble desolation ; and yet the wounds
are covered by nature with robes
of blue and emerald that contrast
strangely with the somber tints of
these gipnt columns that tear their
neada in sitely spires towaul the
zenith. In a cleft aboe, a spark
ling streamlet comes tossing on its
way from loftier heights, and
hounds from the eilge over the face
of tho crags to tha shadowy gorge
below. The effect is sublime. A
crystal sheet at the start, it is dissi
- pated into spray and rain and rain
bow dust before it gets to the
flower-set pool, around which the
prismatic glow of purple and
orange and violet are plavingas
the softened sunlight falls upon it
through the glancing needles of
the pines. The air is filled with
the music of the water; the
low note of the sparkling cas
cade as it bounds from thp
edge of the cliff, alternating with
the treble of the lighter spray as
it patters into the rocky basin be
low. Three hundred feet above,
the leafy banners spring lightly
from those Flauting walls that
were never brushed save by the
giddy sweep of the eagles' wing or
the fall of some discrowned forest
king to the swiftly rushing current
below. Farther back arc beetling
cliffs of crjmblmgrock with lateral
crevasses in their frowning heights,
with here and there transverse
masses of brown rock bridging the
heights to still loftier peaks above.
Over the craggy ledge flowed a
thin sheet of dancing,bubbling wa
ter that swayed in the breeze and
sparkled in the sunlight, and
breaking into a thousand glittering
drops rained in fragments of rain
bow hue to the little lake that

To rne south the Saddle Moun
tain tood defined against the sap
phire sky; back toward Astoria, "a
silver streak of shining sea," our
noble bay glittered in the level
rays of the sinking sun; to the
north, "lonely as God and white as
the moon" the lovely Mount St.
Helens reared its snow-crowned
cono; great masses of orange col
ored cloud went slowly sailing by,
trailing white streamers in the
sunny air from the hidden cloud
factories on the mount above; the
violet haze of sunset filled the
river with a wine-colored light,
and around and above was a trans
parent hue of splendor borrowed
from tho robes of heaven.
So, onward wo sped to Portland,
while tho billowy tides of gold and
crimson licht faded into nuriih"
and hazy gray, which, in ti:n.. '
gave place to the blue and silvei
of the night. The prettiest hour
of such a bright day is at its close,
when each little star comes twink
ling out from infinite azure; aud,
answering " Here," to its name at
God's eternal roll-call, it falls icto
line for the silent procession of the
night.
Returning Sunday morning, we
read Tom Merry's sketch on the
first page of the Oregonian, and
thought tho sniwts from Nevada .-

quartzite crags could find their
counterpart on the wooded heights
of till) the noblest river of thr-
west.
