W gftu girilg gtato ASTOKIA-OBBOOX: THUESDaY-TZTT.... APRIL. 13 1SS2 J.r.IIlLLOEAV... ..Editor. Well Done We commend the action of tho Republican County Convention, yesterday , afternoon, 1n voting - riorty-sixio.oncr-tue resolutions r piiulished in', another column as being the sentiment of Clatsop County Republicans. There is nothing partisan about the two matters a Democratic conven tion could, just, as well voto on them as a Republican convention and wo are particularly pleased to seo public reference to the mat ter of tho Astoria land grant. Tho True Inwardness. Ox this coast there was a cer tain amount of opposition to the passage of tho Chinese bill that helped to crystallize the antagon ism of.a New York ward politician into a dctorminetl dissent from the chair, which he so unworthily occupies. That opposition came from tho steamship companies, and the owners of vessels engaged iu the transportation of coolies; it came from the railroad companies, that want cheap men to build their lines in this state and adja cent territories, and from a good' many others who see a speculative chance in politics by tho defeat of the bill. This, for the ceast: of course, east of tho Rockies wero manufac turing rings with their powerful Washington lobbies, and bigoted sentimentalists, Hoars and Dawes and smaller Fry, who play into the hands of the man-dealers without knowing it. Among cap italists and employer :u the east, there is an underlying idea that it is a good thing lor iliera if thore it a largo body of Chinese cheap laborers somewcro in this coun try. They do not want them in the New England or Middle States now, or perhaps at all; their presence and tho fact that any de sired number can bo obtained in ,. ten days, answer their purposes. If the operatives strike, or if they refuse-to submit to further im poverishment, thore will not be any trouble in filling their places with Chinamen. So, tho Asiatics in California and along the line of the building lines in Oregon and adjacent" territories are a standing menace to the whole laboring population of the country. Those millionaire philanthropists who talk nasally of carrying tho gospel to the heathen, are really, helping a. plan to keep in readiness a means for btill further debasing the labor markets of tho East. The talk about tho loss of com merce was designed to scare a large class of nervous merchants who had no Chinose business them selves but thought it was some great prize that they might win m the future. As for "hospitality,' it is singular that Eastern people 'who prato about "protection," could not see that the crj for truo protection that went up from the quarter of a million Pacific voters was the only true phase of "pro tection" in existence, as well as for tho means of securing that ex istence. But the true inwardness of its defeat was pocket interests in the West and bigotry and fa natacism in theEast. Coin for the Campaign. Wues Astorran for Congress in New York, a few months ago, on the Republican ticket, in a Re publican precinct, in that foreign oity that is built on Manhattan Island, he spent seventy-five thousand dollars, and was beaten and sorved him right. He certainly knew that audi a sum of money could not have been used in a small district, except to buy votes, and have been willing to gain an (-faction that way. But "the manipulators who generally gain standing because they aro supposed to bo expert as purchas ers of votes, are.Teryapt to keep' ihe money, and let the voters do a they ploaso. That was tho x?av it happened in Aster's casa. He jwid for tho goods -but tier were rcot delivored. As a general thins both parties uso all the money thy can get, and neithor can afford to attack the methods of tho other, for fear of retaliation. It would probably be found that such funds are largely absorbed by the men who have the disbursing oi them. When not absolutely stolen they are uso'd for purposes unthoughc of by the donors "of tke "assessed. -Canned Goods, "Iron Ware." That their canned goods are iron ware, will be news to our cannery men hero. In the city of Flensburg, Germany, an inter preter of the tariff has been found who has made tho discovery. Canned goods pay, in Germany, a duty of 12 marks,(2. 8G) per 100 kilos, and iron ware, pays 2-1 mai ks, ($5. 72) per 100 kilos. Now, the salmon is packed in tin cans, the ' tin plato is simply tinned iron, therefore, all canned goods arc iron ware, and must pay duty ns such. Tho collector at Flensburg has been sustained by tho custom house Director of Schleswig-Hol-stein, and tho Berlin minister of finance. . No wonder Bismarck is happy, as ho oats his fine Co lumbia Falmon at broakfast, realiz ing that it is nutritious as food and productive of revenue as iron. Thk polygamy bill will evi dently be dodged by those to whom it is intended to apply. The poK -gamists aro said to constitute not ten per cent, of tho Mormon pop ulation; those who are in office propose to resign to Mormons who do not follow the prohibited prac tice. Thoro is absolutely nothing which can bo lawfully done to molest a Mormon who does not practice polygamy; he is to be judged by .the same law which is applicable to American citizens in all the territories. That i the reason why there is not much i bo sxpeoted until the population of Utah contains a greater propor tion of Gentiles. The plea of re ligious freedom is a sound ono for tho Mormons, who conform their personal habits to tho customs of society. They sympathize with Mormons who do not so conform, and all tho laws in the world can not raako them think differently. Tho evil is ono which must be literally lived down. TiiEnu is one lesson that the Pres ident's veto has taught the Pneific Coastere, viz: that this coast has certain rights and interests to which national matters .are of secondary importance. Tho old fashioned Democratic doctrino of Stato Rights has a chance to spread itself in this instance. It is really of fat less importance whether tho affairs of the federal rfnvnpnRIAnf ti tA rvift nnwn-l K.. 'I'll uiui4(itiiiw aiu iuaiKiLi un lit i II i don, or Arthor, or Blaine, or Conkling, than that "our intercits ! west of the Rocky mountains be properly cared for. Tho ques tion of Republicanism or Dem ocracy should be subordinate to tho question of freo or coolie la bor, to dograded servitude, or continued existence of American citizenship. The Star routers are trying to upsot the suits against them by virtue of an obsolete statute of old Colonial days. Tho nonsense which passes under tho name of law, too often, will some day load to the cntiro abandonment of the system of common law. Califor nia took an important step in that diiootion when she adopted her codes; wo hope to see Oregon in dorse by imitation, such a policy some of these davs. NEW TO-DAY.
