Ix concluding a long; nrtirlc cu titled "Railroads and tlif People," the Dalles Alouutninern- s-n-: "We-have not- iirinrfel-uuoii. the granted rights ot the Northern Pacific Railroad, nor do we pro m pose to do so, or any othei right which has been granted, but we propose to protest, and as best we may, oppose giving up this grand national right of tho river, and what is more, if Portland ees fit to oppose us in trying to get to her wharves at fair rates, and her leading journal is allowed to con stantly throw its influence against our practical interest to which tt.e have a common right, our effort will be made to invite Eastern men who have looked over the ground to put on boats, and es tablish a way across tho portage until such time as the locks are opened, and make such arrange ments at Astoria that our gross products go there for a market:" "A free river" must be the cry of all the papers published in the country drained by the Columbia river, unless gagged or muzzled by any power tint dictates difier entlv. Soall Foreigners Vote! Resuming the discussion of this question which conies up regu larly and which was referred to at length in a previous issue, comes the argument from the same source. Who me we that seek to pro scribe foreigners? How long since wo ourselves or our families landed? Upon what principle shall we debar the man whose family stayed in Ilnropc when ours came to America? The Irish have had to bear the brunt of the onslaught. There is an assertiveness about the Hiber nian that makes him peculiarly susceptible to attack. Even his aggressive intererst in American affairs is irritating to native apa--thy. But when we consider the history of tho rish people tii.it for generations they huto been landless in their own hmd; that father, dying, left to son a legacy of squalor and starvation; lh.it hope offered no inducements to toil, and that forfeiture w.ts the reward of all improvements-t-wc shall wonder only at the 'leinark- aoie pnvpic.il anu nieiieciuai visor which they luivc been able to pre t?eiv No other nation Miailaily situated but h.i lost its. tlnil'l, its patriotism and its mental elasticity. Not so the Iiish. The law of slow development seems not to apply to them. Under all the circumstances, iho proportion of ignorance and crime among them is small. As a people, they are intensely patriotic. Their deto tion to their mother country is sufficient evidence of this. These are all facts which show remark able adaptability to American citizenship; and they should be borne in mind, when demagogic speakers or jouanals ultempt to throw discredit on the whole race because a few hundred gathered upon the sand-lot, and encourage tho vaporings of an idle declaimer. It would be not less unfair to judge Americans by tho Kuklux of tho South or the cow-boys of New Mexico. But it is charged against for eigners, that they are influenced by priests. As a matter of fact, instances are not wanting in which the so-called influence of priests has been one way, and the for eign vote directly the other. way. Granting that such influence is oc casionally attempted to be' exerted there can be no doubt that its power and frequoucy are much overstated. One may probably hear double the number of politi- t'Hl finnnnni. in n vAni frrmi !-.. i j , tesiant ministers as from Catholic priests. It is not frequent lliatl Irotestant clergymen stt in con ventions, and even run for office. The writer does not recall a single instance of this among tho Catho lics. It is a matter of common observation, that among tho second generation of Catholics in 't America, the influence of the jdi'jrch U at its minimum. As tho ballot of tin countrv 1 - .-Hicrut. there can be notbiii"- accu I lately known as to their politicly i complexion. This fjet !p:kK to much luo-f statement. Bui. in a I g.-iitiral way, hi- know that sin-, Germans incline to the Republi can party, and the Irish to tin; Democratic. ' This, however, is lar from being the universal rule. We know, also, that in the Solid South, which is the conseivafor of De mocracy, the proportion of for eigners is less than in anv other part of the Union; while Iov:i, which is the banner state of the Republicans, has a larger percent age than most of her sisters.
