Carl Adler announces his place of business as the place to buy books, musical instruments, variety goods, etc. The East Portland Vindicator gets somo newsy letters from Astoria signed "Aetho," who is well posted and writes a good letter. Messrs. McCraken, Flanders and lugersoll rcommend that seventy-fire tens per day be called usual dispatch in discharging at Portland. He had been reading "The Moor of Venice," and, upon going over to Case's to pay a note, ho exclaimed, "0 tellah, Cash I owe, Desdemona, Iago." Ship captains and others inter ested in marine affairs, can find the New York Maritime .Register on file in The Astorian office, for their con venience. Various little booms are being gotten up for various little candidates all over the state. This neck of woods hasn't been heard from yet, but there is no hurry. $22,000 was the price paid for the British Columbia Packing Company's outfit at New Westminster, B. C, by the new canning company recently or ganized here. We are in receipt of a big pack of flower seeds from D. M. Ferry and Co., of Detroit,. Michigan. If they had sent along a consignment of hang' ing baskets or -flowor pots also, we could start in opposition to tho Occi dent conservatory. Jorkins was in the office yester day and got telling us what kind of a preacher ho liked: says Jorkins, says he, "I don't like to see a man go to sleep in the pulpit, nor dwell too long on one word, I'd rather have him act as though ho were fighting bees." Tho New York Maritime Register says that in discussing its recent arti cle on the Columbia river system of towage and pilotage, tho Oregon press "In one or two instances became quite hysterical." It is cruel to thus hurt the feelings of the Oregonian by pub licly "calling attention to its infirmity. They are having no end of fun in Oakland, Cal., over n trial in tho po lice court for alleged Infringement of .the Sunday law. So far out of crowds who have been snmmoncd six model jurymen have been found; men who don't read a newspaper, nnd who don't kpow whether this is the eighteenth or the nineteenth century. Editob ASToniAN : I have noticed sinco 1 have been iu this fine ri er port that a great deal of troublo lias been had in, and by sea captains, as to how the bar is on their day of sailing, and alao by pilots and incoming ships. So I propose that the government place a signal station out on tho poinr, to bo connected by telegraph with Astoria, and ships bound iu will be sure to get a pilot, and outward bound ships can know with safety as to lion- the bar is con ducting itself. And as I noticed in your paper that captains complain of Iming to lie outside for day3 for n pilot, by this means of which I speak we would not have any more of such humbug in our port. If the govern ment should not heed this, there could be a line put up at small expense and owned privately by the tugs and river pilots. c. F. M. Tho consignment of salmon that she takes closes out tho catch of 'SI. Regular convocation of Saints John R. A. Chapter No. 14, this (Thursday) evening at 7:30. Work on P. M. degree. Sojourning com panions cordially invited to be present. The Puget Sound Argus Icarus that the nm of fur seal ha9 already commenced at Cape Flattery, and that the ?eal aro coming in great numbers. There will bo tremendous opposition among local dealers, and lively times at the Cape. A letter from Glenn Patterson, of Gray's Harbor, says- "Thero is quite an excitement on the north side about gold. They aro taking out 20 per ton, washing black sand. They have struck a lead 18 inches thick, running back into tho beach. About twenty claims have been takon, and all ex pect to mako fortunes." A San Diego, Cal., paper con siders it a wonderful "phenomenon" because "last night tas seen a large, clearly-defined ring around tho moon," and being utterly unable to account for tho occurrence, resignedly says: "Wo are drifting into that. state of mind in which nothing can surprise Tho law of Washington Territory makes it unlawful "for any person to kill any deer for tho purpose of sailing tho samo or offering them for strle in the market from tho first day of February tn tho first day of August of each year." The penalty for violating this law is a fino of not less than ?12 nor moro than 25 for each offense. No snow has yet fallen at Gray's harbor. Work on Simpson's saw mill at the mouth of the Hoqiiim, has sus pended for the wintor. The wharf is completed, and tho mill timbers, ma chinery and eyerything necessary for putting up tho mill will be brought around from their mill across tho river when spring opens, and it is intended to have it in operation by tho lirat of July. Tho lumbor will be shipped in the company's vessels, and a steam tug will be put on tho harbor and river to tow vessels and logs. "H C WOT COIXT THIS. Poet Who Forgot TTliat He Started to Write About. Masquerade Ball. The masquerade ball uiven under the auspices of Astoria Engine Co. No. 1, last Tuesday evening, w.u ati enjoyable event. At 20 minutea after nine tho grand march .took place. Tho hall was filled to -its utmost ca pacity with spectator who all seemed to enjoy the fun. At 15 minutes to eleven the maskers wcro drawn into lino nfter ouo and one-half hours dancing, for the purpose of unmask ing and receiving tho prizes. The following gentlemen acted ss judges: A. W Berry, A. Hewett, John Hume, P. W. Parker, and H. W. Wetherby, who after careful consideration award ed tho prizes as follews: Finest costume, lady; ladies hand some dressing caso, Mrs. Royco as Silver Shower. Finest costume, gent; large cabinet album, Fred Krozel as Lord Leicester. Best sustained character, lady; box of perfumo and jewelry caso, Mis3 Ella Campbell as Little Buttercup. Best sustained gents character; handsome gents dressing case and brush, H. J. Hansen as Oscr Wilde. Thero were several other characters and costumes deserving of special notice among which may bo named tho follewing: Knight of Pythias, Dashing Daisy, Hungarian Girl, Queen of Diamonds, Fire King, Knife Grinder and Jiottlo Champagne. The committee on management tender their thanks to tho gentlemen who acted as judges. Tho affair was bothfiuanciallyandsociallyAprononnc- ed success. A caso of What the physician in charge pronounces small pox is in Upper Astoria, the fifteen year old daughter of Mr: Bell boing afflicted. School has boelt closed and the houe strictly quarantined. All that can be done to prevent tho spread of the dis ease has been done, and 'tis thought can bo prevented from being epidemic. Lecture. At the Congregational church this evening Rev. R. W. nil), of Salem, will lecture; his subject being "Ri en2i, the last of tho Tribunes." Tho proceeds will be for the benefit of tho Ladies Aid Society of the Presbyterian church. He wants that houses with residents afflicted by "measels" shall be ornamented with a blue flag, scarlet fever by red, diphtheria by white and small pox by yellow ori flammes.
