More Accnralo Area Geogkathijzs and other statis tical works havo for the last two decades given areas of our stated and territories as nearly correct as it was possible; yet it was always felt that exactness in the matter of square miles had not been -reached. Bur the admirable sys - tern of statistics compiled during the taking of the last census com prised an exact calculation of areas ,of surface, as well as compilation of other important tables, and the result is now published.' The gen erally accepted statement relative to areas receives a violent shaking up. The area of Oregon was al ways put down at 95,274 :quarc miles; California, 18S,981; Nevada, 104,200. . The new -surrey, ac cording to the reports of the tenth census, show that our own state has 96,030 square miles: Califor nia, 158,300; Nevada," 110,700; these figures differing materially from lormer ones. But even for the new figures absolute exactness can not be claimed, close approxi mation being the most tint ran be admitted. Our total area of states and terri- j torics, exclusive of Alaska, can be easily remembered as about three million square miles the census figures being .1,025,0000! which 55,G00 are water surface such as lakes and rivers. Alaska would, probably, add half a million square miles; Rhode- Island is the smallest, with 1,250 square miles. Next to Texas come California, Nevada, Colorado, with 103,925 square miles. Oregon, and then Minne sota with S3,3G5. There is a wide contrast be tween these six states and thf six smallest; Rhode Island with but 1,085 square miles of actual land surface; Delaware with 2,050; Connecticut with 4,900; New Jer sey with 7,815; Massachusetts, 8,315.: and New Hampshire, 9,305. " But there is no less an inverse contrast in, the influence these lit tle commonwealths have exerted upon the history of 'our country. The largest count' In any of the states is "Nye county, Nevada, with about the smallest population ; the smallest county is New York county, N. Y., with by ar the largest population. There is" au other striking contrast. Dakota heads the territories (exclusive of Alaska) with an r.ya of 149,100 square miles; .rnd .Montana- fol lows closely with an area of 140, 0S0. Dakota asks to be divided before she enters the" Union, but she is already smaller than Texas or California and hasn't got half the population of those- states. Texas will undoubtedly be divid ed into four states, each one larg er than New York or New Jersey together. The ratio of water to land area affords another source of contrast among the states and ter ritories. Proportionally, Rhode Island has the most water in hers 105 Fquare jnilcs to 1,0S5 of land. Maine, Florida, and North Carolina are other examples of large water area, including bayous and inlets. - As a contrast wc find arid Arizona with 100 s-quare miles ot of water surface to 112, 920 square miles of land: and her neighbor, New Mexico, with 120 square miles of water to 122,400 of land. Independence. Tiik Salem Statesman quotes approvingly an Eastern i hetofical fusilade in which occurs the singu lar statement that . a newspaper cannot bo independent and con sistent. The Eastern man was mistaken in writing it and the Statesman is worse mistaken in en dorsing it.. The opinions of a newspaper have a value propor tional to the freedom of thought on the part of its proprietors. Of course, at this day, a man that has no opinion on political matters is a foel: a roan that is afraid to ex press bis opinion is a ceward: and any. man has a right to be wrong. Time was when any and all news papers had to have a stronsr bias either ono wav or the ether: when the views of the editor were eager l ly looked for, and the opinions of one man moulded the opinions ol , . his readers". That era has passed i - away: it passed when died Blair, Rhttt, Ritchie, Prentice,. Bennett, Raymond, Greeley. The parly whip can no longer be laid upon the backs of thinking men, least of all upon men who refuse to train blindly with raw political re cruits and swallow, implicitly, all that they are told. Faith is a good thing in religion, but it will not give .any man his true bear ings in politics. A newspaper that "holds the mirror lip to nature," that acts as a reflex- of whatever of import is going on, that gives credit for good wherever found, and castigates evil wher ever it exists, must, assuredly, have more influence in its utter ances, than the "organ," be it Re publican or Democratic, that can see no good in any man or men who happen to bo on the opposite side. This uovernment is a govern ment of checks and .balances. It needs two great parties: it will always have them; the nearer those two parties are equal nu merically the better the class of men put forward for office; the better the government, the more prosperous, the nation. 'Tis the province of the indui'knkent newspaper to contribute toward this desideratum by refusing to throw mud' at merit or attempt to clothe devils in the robes of angels of liirht; 'tis the privilege of the independent newspaper to riee in the sunlight of truth above the mist and darkness of political in trigue, and, "discerning the right to proclaim it; 'tis the prerogative of the independent, newspaper to refilse to "crook the pregnant hinges of the knee that thrift may follow fawning,'' by giving Tin- worthy men to know that it can not be coaxed nor bullied nor bought to advocate any party creed or party cry that is inimical to the eternal principles of inde pendence that underlie the' insti tutions of our country. But some mne who finds difficulty in defining his-terms may say: "You can't be neutiaL' No, indeed; a paper that tries to be "neutral" is a sort of hermaphrodite, ncjther fish nor flesh, man nor woman, horse nor alligator. Neutrality is as differ ent from independence as a green scummed frog pond is from the current of the Columbia. Neu trality cowers in the earth; 'inde pendence dares to disagree, and opposes anything that tend to injure the common good. An in dependent newspaper is not neces sarily an iconoclastic one; there is ho need to go around breaking images, but there is great need in this age of gas, glass, glare and dazzle, ol shams and bladders, to be able and in duo position to show up unworthy motives and give due credit to all honest effoits for the right.
