w Jgto gnilS gsteiatu ASTORIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY OCT. 12, 1BSI J. F. HAIX0RAX. Editor. The Jeannellc. Men who, by reason of their position .should know, express the belief that the Jeannette has gone totthe North Pole. Had her voy age been, a failure", her crew would have returned in. -sledges to the points visited by the relief expe ditions. The Jeannette was fitted for a five years' voyage, and is, in all probability, doing the work for which she was sent out. She will in all probability work her way through the fiords in the land round the North Pole, and may possibly reappear on the east side of Greenland and come down in Baffin's bay, thus achieving the greatest triumph that could await her. The openness of the season has-been such that in fifty years the Jeannette could not have prosecuted her search under more favorable conditions. Bv next July she will be due, but not be fore. Until July no one who has at heart the interests of the expe dition can expect her. After that her absence will become- a serious consideration. Last Monday's San Francisco Bulletin publishes editorially the report that the South Pacific Cpast railroad has been purchased by the Central Pacific. It says: "We do not vouch for the correctness of the rumor, but it comes from two or three sources, one . of which is rarely at fault." It is a fact that the Central Pacific has recently purchased the Santa Cruz and Watsonville and Monterey and caiinas narrow sauce roads. 1 lie former has been already converted to a broad gauge and latter soon will 'be. It is understood that these purchases are for the pupose of heading" off Jay Gould in his efforts to obtain a terminus at San Francisco. The graders on the California and Nevada railroad have advanced on the Oakland end several miles beyond that city. Another rumor which appears to have a basis of fact is that the Oregon and California road and Sacramento Valley railroad, the former under control of Villard andjgthe latter controlled by the CentralPacific, will form a junc- -"tionsisomewnere near the Urcgon state line, forming a complete line from San Francisco to Portland, and thence to Puget Sound. - 9Tii Value of "the land grant of the Northern "Pacific is greater than is 'supposed. Where it runs ' -through Ta State the company has -half the land distributed in alter natesections for twenty miles on each.side of its track. "Where it goes" through a Territory it has half the forty miles on each side. It takes one half a belt 'forty -miles wide through Wis consin, fprty miles wide through Minnesota, eighty miles wide through Dakota, eighty miles wide .through Montana, eighty miles wide through Idaho, eighty miles wide through Washington along 'the Cascade branch, forty miles wide along the Portland branch in Washington, 'and twenty miles 'wide in Oregon nlong the last named branch. ? The state.' election which took place in Ohio yesterday has at tracted considerable attention. Gar field's majority in 1880 was 34,227. IWhat effect recent events have had upon the prospect of Repub lican supremacy in the Buckeye state, is as yet problematical. The iiresult-aofAthe . Iowa election is a foregone conclusion, the only ques tion being the figures of the Re publican majority. At a. meetings of the Portland Boarao Trade; ilast. 'Monday it was deemed inexpedient to at tempt any deepening of the river channel by using the Geo. W. Elder, as had been proposed. The understanding seemed to be that - Hite,rj,he st Prx. the government dredge would be ready for service and work till the end of the season. Speaking of immigration the San Francisco Call says that the California Board of Immigration should try to answer the question "What can an emigrant to Califor nia do without any money at all?" The best thing he can do is to staj' where he is, as far as the prospec tive point of immigration is concerned. Buffalo are very plentiful this season in the Judith basin, Mon tana, and hunters anticipate a rich harvest. If the animals- be slaugh tered in future as they were last year but a short time will elapse before the Yellowstone region will no longer be a home for buffalo. One party of five railroad grad ers, working in Southern Utah, have killed since last spring 215 rattlesnakes. This statement is vouched for by the entire religious press of that territory. A two million dollar fire in New York last Sunday night burned two men, one hundred horses, and a $50,000 oil painting. Bayard, of Delaware, was elect" ed president pro tern of the senate last Monday. The Sacramento Record-Union, speaking of the extension of the California end of the road, says: Arrangements have been made for an immediate extension of the California and Oregon railroad from Redding to the state line. The line of the road, it is now thought, will be located by the way of the lava beds and Link ville, Oregon. Engineering par ties are in the field, to be followed by forces of graders. The Oregon Central will build down and meet the extension of the California and Oregon at the state lino. Caviar. Wilmington probably has the largest sturgeon fishing firm in the country. It employB some thirty or forty nets, all told, on the Delaware, ten of which are fished by the month. A schooner i kept busy in the ice trade, arm a steamer accompanies the boats. While tho men are fishing, the steamer moves from boat to boat, taking on tho stur geons as fast as caught, dressing there on the boat and taking the caviar from them. The seines in which the fish aro caught are about 200 fathoms loag, are 32 meshes deep, and are made of 32-cotton twine. The firm uses three tons of cotton twine a year. The season commences about April 1, and should close about July 1, so as to give the fish a chance to spawn. As it is the river is fished clear up to the freezing time. Speaking of cavi are, mentioned above, it should be stated that it is the spawn of tho fish, and is a favorite sauce, particularly with the Germans. It consists simply of the fish eggs, properly cured, and epicures regard it very highly. Many hundred kegs are shipped to Germany each year. Tho firm, after much trouble, is able to put up tho caviare very nicely, with a patent prepara tion. Bible Society. The annual meeting of tho Clatsop county branch Bible society was held at the Congregational church last Sat urday evening. The reports of the various officers and committees were received and filed. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Rev. J. "V. Milli gan; Vice President, Chas. Ste'ens; Treasurer and depository, John Bryce; Secretary, P. B. Elberson; executive committee, E. C. Holden, E. S. Mer rill, Dr. A. C. JKlinne'. This commit tee met on Sunday evening, at the rooms of the Y. M. C. A., aud after receiving repprts, etc., from Hew P. C. Hetzler, and appointing local agents, adjourned to meet to-morrow evening, at tho same time and place, when some unfinished business will be transacted. MISCELLANEOUS. $67,000,000 CAPITAL.
