w ASTORIA- OREGON: FRIDAY- OCT. 7, 1881 .1. 1'. IIALLORAV Editor. The ft'ortliern Pacific. The following is an abstract of the report of the company's opera tions for the year ending June 30, 1SS1. At .the close of the year the road operated by the company was as follews: Miles. From St. Paul to Sauk Rapid. .. t.k- From Sank Rapids to Brafnard Co FromDulutb to Bismarck. 450 From Casselton to Blanchard ... ta Pacific side, from Tacoma to Kalama ta From Tacoma to Wikeson S8 Total . .791 Of the above distance, the travel from- Casselton to Bismarck was opened on September 18, 18S0. In addition 311 miles were in op eration principally for construc tion earnings derived from com mercial business being credited to construction account until divisions are completed and turned over to operating department, viz, Mis souri division from Maidan to Lit tle Missouri, 150 miles, Pend d'Oreille from "Wallula to Spokan falls, 1C1 miles. Total road-in op eration (exclusive of siding,) 1,0G5 miles. The capital slock of the company lias been reduced during the year by x,100,0oG.rr, that be ing the amount of preferred stock which has been extinguished by sales of land in ?dinnesota and Dakota east of the Missouri river. There remained outstanding on June 30, 1881: Of preferred stock ?j2t"JJV5R IC Of common Mock 4!t0,ooo 00 Total capftal stock 2,312, 88 03 Of the preferred stock, stand as outstanding, $2,051,455 10 is in the treasury. Divisional mortgage bonds are: Missouri division, $2,- 500,000; Pen d' Oreille division, 4,500,000. Total, $7,000,000. The net proceeds of sales of land pertaining to these divisions are pledged to the cancellation of these division bonds. The amount outstanding June 30, 1SS1, was: Missouri division bonds .$2,-l&4,300 Pen d' Oreille division bomb 3,913.000 Total $0,393,300 Land sales durinir the year was as follews: Minnesota and Da kota divisions, 5S8,0S0 at an aver age price of $2 59; total $1,805, 3GS. Missouri division, 509,?S1 at an average price of $2 S5; total, $1, 279,422. Land remaining un sold in this division amounts to 3,987,0S0 acres; Pacific division, S39..47 acres at an average of ""$3 15. Total, $27,901. The uu sold land amounts to about 2,G91, G0G acres. Pen d'Oreille division, 237,82S.G8 acres. Total $GG3,S84. There still remains over 5,000,000 acres of laud unsold in this divis- The O. R. & N. Co. The following Ggures are taken from the financial statement of the O. R. & N. Co. for the past year: The total number of passengers car ried over the various lines: Ocean division, 19,308; river division, 131, GG5; railroad division, 1G,814; the total number of passengers carried was 1G7,787. The fotal amount of freight trans ported was: Ocean division, tons, 135,500; river division, tons, 442,0S2; railroad division, tons, 65,413; total number of tons, 623,025. The company has expended the fol lowing amounts for constructien: On railroads Celilo and Wallula branch, S1,352,70G 06; Baker City branch, $197,667 08; Portland and The Dalles branch, $525,153 50; Grange City $874,710 51. Total, 2,950,210 18. Rails, tools, supplies here and in tran sit, have cost $1,208,993 55. The total expenses for the year- were $4, 150,239 72. Since the work first commenced on those branches the company lias expended (including the total given above) the sum of 85,165, 231 64. The company has expended during the year for improvements on the located railroads and the river and ocean lines, $357,035 65. A Tucson dispatch from Dragoon Summit says the Indians, about 100 strong, crossed the track there on Tuesday morning, their trail leading directly towards' Cochise's stronghold, which is aboift 14 miles westerly from Tombstone. The cavalry were in close pursuit and late that evening were within less than a mile of the hostiles. It is feared that they will escape into Mexico. There arc about 400 Mexi-can-trpops on the line which if notified in time, can easily intercept them. Delineations of Deglutition. "You see," said Bates, as he and The Astoeiax reporter sat down to breakfast, "there's a good deal of dif-1 ference in the way different people eat at these restaurants." So there is, and it's a study to note the various phases of human nature. A man comes in who simply wants a cup of coffee," and having swallowed it, steps quickly out; then comes a little man who glances scornfully around and asks the waiter "what'ye got?" Hav ing had his curiosity satisfied, he ex tracts a bunch of papers, etc., from his side pocket, and looking to see if you note what a man of business he is, con3 and notes them carefully till the arrival of his breakfast. All through that matutinal meal he paws at the victuals and sips furtively at the fluids, all the time keeping his eye riveted on a letter or a column of figures by his plate, as though it had charmed him. Having practically ex hibited how time can be economized at a sacrifice of health and comfort he runs his hands through his hair, jabs his documents into his pocket and achieves a rocket flight through the door. Next comes a married man who hastens to explain his unmarital conduct to a friend, and immediately falls to eating what is set before him without a murmur. Ho sazes on the waiter as if contrasting tho usual with the occasional and manifests a lively interest in the whereabouts of that important individual. The door opens with a -bang and closes with a dam, and a man comes in who immediately orders everything in the house and finds fault with it, yet keep3 on eat ing and finally goe3 out in a paroxys mal fit of wheezing. And then comes one of "the bo's," a little shaky but otherwise in good condition. A brief conversation ensues as to whether the eggs shall be shirred or poached, and this being settled with a parting ad monition as to the nature and quality of the toast, he gazes languidly out of the window meditating, probably, on the mutability of luitnan events, and wondenncc if he had only been lucky enough to fill when he called Pete, instead of only having two pairs against Pete's pat flush, how different it might have been. Then comes a quaintly-acting individual from the outside, who looks with interest at all around, and, depositing his hat under his chair, goes quietly and S3'stemati cally to work Having finished, he picks up the aforesaid hat, extracts therefrom a huge handKerchief,!ooks at it earnestly as if identifying lost prop erty, blows a blast upon his nose, re places his handkerchief in the hat, and the hat on Ills head, and departs in peace. Breakfast and lunch time begin to merge. Bates wipes oil" his chin and saya 'tis time to go. SEALED PROPOSALS WILL UK IJE celed at the office of the Auditor and Clerk of the City of Astoria, until Monday, October 10th 1881, at 2 o'clock p. si., for tlio improvement and repair of West-tith street in Shlvely's Astoria, from the north line of Water street to the north line of Cedar street, by removing all defective piles stringers, cais, or other timbers, and .sub stituting therefor new and sound piles, stringers, caps, or other timbers, similar to those used in the construction of the original roadway or street, and by the removal of all defective plank on said portion of said street and substituting therefor new and sound plank of not less than three inches in thick ness. All of said work to be done in accord ance with the provisions of ordinance No. 41C of said city. B:ds must state the price for re pairing in front of each lot separately. Each bid must be accompanied with a guarantee signed by two responsible tax payers, to the enect that if the contract be awarded to such bidder that lie will, within fortv-eight hours after such award is made, enter into contract with the citv of Astoria therefor. and will give a bond to the city, with two good and sufficient securities, for tiie faithful performance of Ills contract.
