All accounts due this office prior "to September 30, 1881, are pa .yable to Mr. D. C. Ireland. By pe. rson&J effort and desire to please, tb e un dersigned hope to merit the same, meed of business patronage sp, liberally accorded to our pr$d-J cessor. J. F, Halloed & Qr Snnday Thgn V ' Though it is neither nor our purpose'' , , m ' our province io furnish the - .Astokiax with on sacred matters. any homilies " yet the re restwsu that t sou" ! jurrence of this day of gestive of a few thoughts nay not be amiss. The gc .id of church going bells con- antly recalls to the mind the ut terances of the man-God which are as fresh in their utterance and as sublime in their teachings as when amid Judean hills they fell from His lips- eighteen centuries ago. True religion, the religion of every day life, need not be confounded with the din and cant that some times tend to mar one's earthly peace. It has the same connection with the churches that the masonry of the acqueduct has with the water that flows refreshingly through it. The omission in our framwork of republican doctrine of all mention of religion, is, of itself, the great est proof of the high regard in which we Americans, as a people, hold true religion. Our frame work of government recognizes its strength: that it needs no bolster ing; no State recognition nor State aid; that it knows no geographical boundary, and that it is so intimate a part of our national life that lib erty itself could not exist without it. Astronomers tell us that what we call "time," is but the small est segment of- a mighty cir cle: that all the ages are but one tick of God's pendulum; that these comparatively brief periods of duration may be divided into cycles. In this realm of thought we are at present passing through a cycle of weighing, doubting, proving, discarding assumption and tradition and demanding tan gible facts. "What men call a want of faith is oft-times the very opposite. It is a hunger for more, not less. The past is so narrow, the future grows broader and broadedi ' And now comes the news that the White House will not be long without a lady to do the honors and preside at the Presidential table. President Aethur has exhib ited backbone- enough so far in the- prosecution of the Star route thieves. The matter is to be nut through, and how great is the con sequent squirming. On the evening of the 29th ult., at New Tacoma, C. E. Spencer shot atul fatally wounded H. T. Dewitt. Spencer is the individual who was fired out of .New Tacoma a few days ago for expressing sat isfaction at Garfield's death. He returned with the above result. Wheels within wheels. 'Tis ru mored, that Senator Lapham, the newly-elected New York senator will be tendered a seat in Arthurs .cabinet, and when Gov. Cornell calls a special session of the leg islature to elect a successor, Conk--ling'is to be .quietly "run in."- 'Tis said that the editor of an up-country exchange last week started' to accomplish- the oft attempted feat of eating thirty quail in as many consecutire days. The experiment failed oh account of the .singular behavior of a restau rant keeper, who refused to fur nish the quail for nothing. Thus it is that the progress of scientific inquiry is continually defeated and retarded by the narrow, preju dicesof ttie ignorant-and'debased. Brilliant jouth soliloquizes oh deck of steamer thusly: "Most liea are hyperboles. Hyperbole is a fig ure; hence most lies are figures. But figures can't lie. Ergo, a lie i not a ie. " Faulty logic, though. Recommen dation is also made that more hose be purchased, so that each company may hare an equal amount. As the water supply furnished by the house of Astoria Engine Company No. 1, is alleged to be uncertain, it is recom mended that that company be fur nished with a better supply, or allow them the amount of the Iwater bills, they to have the matter in their own charge. Mr. Berry also suggests that the fire ordinance of the city be so amended that the chief engineer may have some authority to act as in his judgment he deems for the beet inter ests of the city, and at the same time give the Council power to prose cute as per opinion of City Attorney. The attention of the Council is called to the bell tower, and its repair recom mended, under the supervision of the proper committee. Marriage for Month of September.
