The season is practically closed, and there arc few fish in sight. Capt. Whitcoml) and wife, Mrs. Holt and Mr. aud Mrs. C. A. May are off on a berrying expedition, up Buckeye slough. Mr. W. T. and Miss Blanche and Miss Jennie Bell, of Salem, are visit ing their sister in Astoria, Mrs. Capt. J. H. D. Gray. A Vancouver Editor says he will not advertise a saloon in his paper. If reports be true ho used to advertise them on his nose. - -Capt. G. Reed took the opposition bar tug Mary Taylor to Portland yes terday. One of the agents, Mr. C. J. Trenchard, accompanied him. Mr. Davis reports very hot weath er east of the mountains. At Unia tila lauding last Sanday afternoon the mercury rose to 115 in the shade. Senator Grover left by the Ore gon to be near the national capital, in case that the president should die, and senate should convene to elect a president pro torn of the senate. Plans are about matured for the building of a three-masted schooner at South Bend mills. Mr. Robert Miller informs us, she will be 12G feet keel, 32 feet beam, lOt feet hold. Mr. Geo. JI. Bennett, wife and family, of Portland, are registered at the Occident. Mr. Bennett is of the firm of Bennett & Cardwell, of the pepular palace boot and shoe store. The markets of Astoria are well 4k stocked with fruits principally from San Francisco. Butter is plenty but eggs are scarce, and going up in price, which is a blow at the stomach, and & foul blow; a blow below the belt. Proposals are invited for a County jail in Astoria. This makes three buildings inviting the attention of contractors in Astoria, aggregating at least $20,000 worth of work and ma terials. Not bad for a little town. Liberty hall was well filled yes terday, on the occasion of the mati nee given by Geo. Hills variety troupe for the benefit of St. Mary hospital. The troupe acquitted themselves very creditably, aud the audience was well pleased with the entertainment. Circuit Court Callender.
