Another operation was perform ed on the President br Dr.Agncw Tuesday morning, and a piece of the fractured eleventh rib, and one or two small pieces of splin tered bone cut away, the opera tions being made through the in cision cut Saturday. Unfavorable symptoms, Monday night and Tuesday morning, are said to be due to irritation by particles of bone in the wound. Ex-Surgeon General Hamilton told a Herald reporter Monday night that cer tainty the President has not had the best talent and treatment available. Bliss is probably a very fair surgeon, but Barnes has not seen a shot-gun wound since the Mexican war, and as to Wood ward, he has probably never seen one in his life. Wales was the best man they had, and he was dismissed by Bliss. The surgeons have never made search for the bullet, which was the very first thing they ought to have done, and they have never made the slightest endeavor to extract the bullet. They have evidently been afraid to treat the President as they would have treated an ordi nary man, and that i all wrong. Dr. Agnew says that the Presi dent is better than when he saw him on Sunday. There appears to be no real foundation for the sudden alarm all over the eountrv. Sam Bran nans Failure. A dispatch from Guaymas, a few days ago, contained the fol lowing reference to Sam Braiinansj new venture: "Sam Brannan is here and was paid $10,000 at the Mexican Custom house. He re turns to San Francisco by the Newbern, the federal judge having granted him permission to have the land surveyed. Owing to the rebellion among the Indians, Bran nan says the land now to be allot ted to him is not the same which he originally had been promised." A later dispatch from the same city has this reference to him: "The federal judge here has re fused permission to Sam Brannan io have his lands surveyed, and his engineers have gone to Mexico. Brannan has appealed to the fed eral government, and will soon re turn to San Francisco to await developments." Mr. Brannans trouble in obtaining the desired permission has resulted from his failure to act promptly. The grant is said in Sonora to have been made by C. Manuel Castro, with out adequate authority, and to be consequently void. Conceding, however, that the grant was regu larly made, it is claimed that Brannan has failed to comply with the conditions imposed upon him, and that he has therefore forfeited all title to the land, and it has lapsed to the Mexican govern ment. The growth of Dakota since the discovery of gold in the Black hills, has been marvelous. There is talk about dividing the territory into three states, one of which shall be mining and grazing, and the other two agricultural. The Northern Pacific railroad ft, now completed across the territory. In the southern portion of the ter ritory two railroads have reached the Missouri river in their western progress, and are making for the Black-hills. The eastern section is traversed- by rail from the Ne braska line almost to the Manitoba frontier, and many local roads are finished or in process of building. "While encamped at a point a few miles below Yakima City, recently, engineer Kingsbury and party had occasion to siuk a well to secure water. At the depth of thirty-two feet the workmen found an old and rusty pocket knife, having but one blade and it broken. The knife shows that it had been used, and probably within the last decade. The well from which it was taken is located on ground about one mile from the river. The question naturally arises hoyr came a knife -thirty-two feet deep J inhe ground of -a. wilderness. The ctynamite infernal machines were shipped from Boston in a Cu- nard steamer. jSpeaking of this in the house of commons on Monday, Sir William Harcourt stated that each machine contained eleven car tridges, each of which was charged with nitro-glycerfne and compound similar to gun cotton. One of the supposed cement barrels had in all fourteen pounds of this dangerous explosive material in it, and its im possible to estimate the fatal effect of even an accidental concussion upon such a mass. The govern ment, he says, is employing every recourse to discover the Liverpool consignes, and the Boston consign ors of these machines. For some time past he said, open threats have appeared in fenian journals of the United States, that such outrages would be perpetrated, and funds solicited for such purpose. He be lieves that the principal origin of these attempts at assassination was in the freedom of the press. It is a disagreeable fact, but we arc sometimes almost forced to agree with Sir William, that the liberty of the press is a bit too broad in very many instances. Spain, also, is veiy disquieted over the French operations in Africa. France is once more powerful, and knows it, or she would not calmly disregard the bad temper of England, Italy and Spain, and go on her way regard less of their ill will. The recent fires on Dr. Glenns ranch, in Colusa county, California, burned over four miles and de stroyed 3,000 acres of grain, four miles of fence, six head of mules, one header and eighteen wagons. It was started by small boys who kindled a fire in an old stove that stood outside of an unoccupied cabin. The Post master-general of En? land states that a plan is shortly to be promulgated which will greatly ameliorate the condition of postal clerks. This is a step in the right direction. We have been of the opinion all along that what postal clerks were really suffering for was to have their condition ameliorated. Mahone is making such head wa in his scheme to capture the Virginia republicans that his suc cess now seems probable. In that event, the straightouts will be left in the attitude of bolters, and their strength with the people will be meagre. It will be a very great triumph for the wily little senator if he carries the state. A correspondent of a Chicago paper thinks that hanging is too good for Guiteau, and imprison ment Tor life is too commonplace, and none of the usual penalties will fit the case. So he wants him sent up in a balloon, -without valve or ballast, and left to take his chances in the mysterious abyss of space, with Providence his guide. As the crime is abnor mal he thinks the penalty should be abnormal, and a terror to fu ture sensational criminals. This shows that Guiteau, if a lunatic, is not the only one in the country.
