If any one doubts that the good Caliph was a reality, let him go to the British museum, or look in the window of a curiosity shop in Oxford street, and he will sec plenty of silver coins bearing, not, indeed, the image, but certainly the superscription of the good IJaioun Alrashid. It i. true that, the coins being in Ambit', the force of their evidence will not be immediately apparent to the casu al observer; but a translation of the inscription will inform him that besides bearing the famous Moslem degma: "There is no God but (Jod; he is one; he has no equal,' and the statement that, 'In the name of God this picec of silver was struck at such and such a town in sueh and such a year, the eoin presents the piophetic missien: -"Mohammed is the apos tle of God," and underneath it the name of the Galiph, Alrashid, and sometimes that of .laafer and Bar mecide as well.
