The Astoria and upper Astoria passenger wagon is so well patronized that Ave shall not be surprised to see another team added before long. John Chinaman enjoyed some sort of a festival yesterday. The can neries all gave them half a da' each for the sports, ceremonies, feast, etc. Mr. Villards promised letter on the subject of transportation, etc., will appear to-motrow in Tiik As torian. It is addressed to the Walla-walla committee. Capt. Geo. A. Pease has obtained leave of absence, and will spend four r five months in eastern Washington, Xrincipally at Spokan falls, where he has valuable personal interests. The annual Salem fair commences on Wednesday, June 20th this year, and will continue until July (ith. This will include a grand colebration on the fair grounds on the Fourth of July. The steamer California, which was announced to sail for Sitka and way ports this morning, will not sail for the north until Thursday morning at 3 o'clock. Shippers should remem ber this. Any person in Astoria has the privilege of reading the health ordi nances, for that niattor all the city ordinances; of Astoria, by calling upon the auditor. We have no time to huntup ordinances nor to write out reports under them for anybody. The schooner Enterprise arrived at South Bend on Frida'. The Trus tee was towed to sea by the South Bend on Sunday. The Anna Gee will go to sea to-day, the Rebecca and Argonaut to-morrow, and the Enter prise on Friday. South Bend is booming. Another unfortunate fellow, a man named McGinnis, from Foss' logging camp, was taken care of by the authorities yesterda'. He will probably be sent to the asylum and as this is about the sixth one, it leads to the inquiry, what can be the mat ter Jackscn and Myers have lost, J. W. and V. Cook have lost, J. G. Meglerand company have lest, also many persons to hear from, from prac tical fish stealers. The latest incident recorded is where the thief actually boarded the Argonaut and took thirty one salmon night before last. --The mystery of finding the ring and bracelet in the whales stomach is partly explained to-day. This state ment also goes to corroborate the statement of Capt. Everson, and fur ther: It proves beyond a doubt that instead of its being a whale, this fish belongs to one of the families of out landish, ferocoius animals, that swim the seas. Mr. A. Booth yesterday handed us a copy of the Chicago Times of the Slat, which contains about 100)00 words of scripture, "the new ver sion;" received the night "before by telegraph from London. It was a bold stroke of policy on the part of Wilber P. Story, but it must have been a stunner to the democracy of the Suck er state to find so much gospel truth in their favorite journal. A friend has kindly conic to our as sistance in trying to solve the myateiy regarding the finding of a diamond ring and n sel of gold bracelets in the stomach of the fish laying at the oil works. He has in his possoeeiou an extract from a paper jMiblinhed in a small town on the south cast of Africa This extract goes on to state that on or about the 1st day of April, 187!), an African princess was out on the buy yachting with a pleasure party. By sonic mishap she fell over board. Almost instantly her arm and hand, which wore beautiful and very costly diamond ring and set of gold bracelets of unique pattern; wnsseixod b' a monster fish ami completely bitten off. The princess wa rescued and her life saved, but at the loss of arm, ring, and bracelet. This, in all probability, i3 the identical fish whicli so horribly mutilated the fair African princess. In fact the finding of the ring and bracelet makes the predic tion almost a certainty. Steps should at once be taken to notify the princess, if living and residence can be ascer tained; of this fact, and if property can be identified by her send thorn at once, and no doubt the finder will re ceive a rich roward and have his name prominent before the princess for life. Michael Sibich. a native of Aus tria, died suddenly of heart disease at Nicks Restaurant yesterday morning. He was drinking a glass of wator at the time the sad event occurred. He was a member of two fraternal socie ties, popular among his countrymen, and his death was a painful surprise j to his frionds. The funeral will take i place on Saturday. The last Commercial Reporter, we understand, assumes that when we refer to it we refer to the Portland board of trade, the city council, etc., etc, eta, and we dont know all what. As they 've suppressed the copy due to this ollicc we will just remind them of the fact, that they may send one along; that we may know just what argument they make to sustain their position. Between "A Glimpse of Lisbou" by one of Harpers Magazine contribu tors for June, 1881, and "A Trip to Lcwiston" by Mrs. Duniway in the last New Northwest, both good arti cles; the merit rests with the Oregon production, both as to the pen picture as well as the regions described, and it must not be presumed that Harpers production was drafted for pleasure alone. The Astoria Juvenile Dramatic so ciety gave their first entertainment at the I'ostoftice restaurant early last evening, and displayed so much natural talent for dramatic art that everyone was surprised and much pleased. Each one contributed liber ally in his or her part, and it would be unjust to make commendable dis crimination. The "Maniac" and "Drummer Boy" were rendored suc cessfully, besides other minor enter tainments. The society .numbers nine members of the Stockton, Arrigoni, Loeb and Biudor families, who acqnit tod themselves nicely and will, we understand, continue the entertain ments. Mr. Jos. Matthews provided a tempting aupper which was duly appreciated and enjoyed. Fourth of July. As will be seen by call published elsewhere, all citizens interested in celebrating the coming anniversary of our National Independence in Astoria are requested to meet at the Court house at eight o'clock sharp on Friday evening, for the purpose of appointing committees and making the necessary arrangements.
