The following Washington dis patch of the 3th, probably asserts a fact : " It is freely asserted to day that if the republican senators, comply with the presidents wish es and select some person, other than Gorham, as candidate ior sec retary of the senate, the vote of Mahone will not be had. It is mainly through Gorlmin'b personal influence that Senator Mahone was brought into close relation with the republicans of the senate and he will not consent to allow Gorham to be set aside. It looks to many persons as though Mahone is master of the situation, and any at tempt to throw Gorham overboard, will result in the icpublicans not only loosing the organization of the senate, but control of commit tees at the next session." The Conference at Paris. It is difficult to understand what is expected of the International monetary conference now in session in Paris. The delegates meet as irresponsible representa tives of certain powers, who will accept conclusions arrived at only in so far as they suit them. Any extended discussion of monetary matters is prohibited by the terms of the invitation; so the talk will be of silver in ply. Naturally enough, nothing will be decided. Those of the delegates who be lieve in the unlimited coinage of silver and advocate the adoption of the double standard by all of the principal nations of the earth, will, if they fail to convert any of their confreres fioin an opposite way of thinking doubtless elaborate their views in a manner sufficient ly exhaustive to convince them selves. The invitation to join in the conference was unfortunate in its terms. It was essentially dog matic, and impliedly commits the countries paiticipating in the con conference to a line of financial policy, the virtue of which the conference i actually called to test. The various powers invited to send delegates to Paris agree upon terms under which they will join an international union for the unlimited coinage of gold and silver at theVate of l.li to 1. The feasibility of the gene: al adoption of the double standard is not to be discussed; tlmt much is taken for granted, and decisions :is to the rejection or acceptance of the in vitation lequested upon a basis more advanced. Great Britain declined to accept and send dele gates. Other countries, while con senting to be repi esented, refuse to allow their delegates to commit themselves to the extent of oting in the confidence. No country will be nccesMirilv bound by any affirmative result that may be reached. A negative decision would, of couise, be complete in itself. Regardless of the fact that a majority of its people probably favor the idea, the United States, so far as it is concerned, is not likely just now to indorse any proposition in the form of a treaty for the unlimited coinage of silver on the new basis, calling for a forcible depreciation of three per cent., no matter what the source from which it emanates. The Glasgow Herald of April 2d has the following on the Clyde shipbuilding trade for March: "A large amount of new tonnage has been put into the water during the month of March by the various firms on the Clyde, and the returns of completed work compare favorably with those for the corresponding period in previous years. The de partments engaged in the latter stages of ship construction have been kept activeh employed during the month, and there is every prospect oE this healthy state of matters centinuing: for sometime. Theie were launched during the month in the upper and lower reaches of the river four teen vessels of an aggregate ton nage of 29,407 tons. The new vessels comprise eleven steamers, one yacht, one baik and a gum boat. The figures for the month are assisted by the Soma, the Quetta and the Xotting Hill, these three vessels alone represent 1G, 000 tons.- Wiib Scliwatka. The May Scribner contains an interesting article from the pen of W. H. Gilder, entitled Among the Esquimaux with Schwatka. It has a number of illustrations, and is principally devoted to describing the character and habits of the Equimaux. The account closes vrith the following paragraph: The sledge journey and search made by Lieut. Schwatkas expe dition constitute one of the most remarkable trips ever achieved. To start upon a years journey through an entirely unknown terri tor', with only one months rations, required no little resolution; and that they would necessarily be com pelled to live as do the natives, dependent entirely upon the game of the country through which they passed, seemed, in comparison with other contingencies, scarcely worthy of consideration. Upon their return, they encountered the rigors of an unusually cold winter. And 3'et, so thoroughly were the white men of the party acclimated that they experienced no more sufl'ering from the extraordinarily low temperatures than did their native allies, thereby affording another illustration of the superi or endurance of the Caucasian. iSfbome sny that it is no use for them to advertise, that they have been in the place in business all their lives, and everybody Knows them.
