IRELAND. Editor. ag y-'c; A mm en v. Ends. Admiral Amnion is bitterly hos tile to Capt. Eads, hence his say ings, in a letter to a gentleman at San Francisco, which we quote from the News, must 'be' taken with some small grain of allow ance. He says: Regarding his (Captain Eads) engineering proceedings, I have to say that the t. Louis bridge, in cluding approaches, damages, etc., was on his estimate to have cost something under 5,000,000; the cost of the bridge to the owners is somewhat over 17,000,000. The jetty system, which one might assume was an application so frequent that its temporary re sult at last has been, almost with out exception, effective the Rhone and one or two other rivers being the exceptions, and the reasons of failure apparent. With the Khone the mountains were near, and the floods brought down gravel, sand, etc., with sufficient force to send it beyond the jetties, where the material is deposited in a tideless sea. But Captain Eads did not adopt the European methods of making mattrasses of willow or other small growth of timber, and then putting them in position .mil ballasting" them until they sank. Instead, he had long pieces of scantling, into which he had pegs placed at cer tain intervals, having a length of some two feet. The scantling formed the flooring of the small growth, and the pegs were de signed to hold the longitudinal wil lows in position; and then another row of sourc given thickness was placed transversely, and so, to some given thickness, these mat trasses rested at an angle from the top of the bank to the bottom of the river. With the breaking of the pegs, gravitation will settle the mass into the stream. Captain Eads is now, year after year, put ting concrete work over his imper fect mattrass work, and dredging like a good fellow to keep the channel to the required depth, to get his yearly payment of $100,000 for maintaining the channel. In short, he has always condemned the idea of dredging, and yet be tween what he spends in that man ner, and the concrete blocks which he is constantly putting on his jetties, he spends quite 100.000 yearly. If you have not read his article in the March number of the North American Review, pray do so. In order to equalize the weight on the wheels, as the forward and after sections of a ship laden would weigh loss than the amid ship section per running or longi tudinal foot, he proposes that the ends should project fifty or sixty feet, so as to compensate. Of course the forward and after trucks would simply be fulcrums for a lever of fifty or sixty feel in length, and of great weight. It would seem that his engineering science does not involve at aii a. knowledge of the simplest of mechanical forces a lever! It is incredible that any man in his senses, and a pretending engineer, should coolly propose leaving the ends of a ship for fifty or sixty feet unsupported, when there is not a ship in exist ence that would be not hopelessby ruined if thus left for twenty-four hours. The sixteenth Industrial exhibi tion of the San Francisco Mechan ics Institute will open on Tuesday, August 2d, continuing four weeks and four days. On a small island called Cor onada, twenty-live miles westward from San Diego, a fine close-grained brown stone has been found. This stone is exactly similar to that so highly prized in New York, where block upon block of man sions are built of it. It is a beauti ful red-brown sandstone, compact and close-grained, easily carved and susceptible of a smooth satin finish. It is said to exist on the island in inexhaustable quantities. A block now on exhibition in San Francisco is attracting much at tention. A meeting of the California grangers was held on the 14th for the modest purpose of controlling the price of wheat and regulating freights. The usual tirades against the mercenary middlemen were indulged in, and the usual display of ignorance made. The News sug gests that until the California farm er becomes rich enough to control the major part of the worlds ton nage, and discovers a method of regulating the worlds supply of wheat, they will be compelled to submit to the great law of supply and demand. We would surest that if they desire better prices for wheat, they should reduce the amount raised by one-half, and their objeot will be accomplished. Stock for a new cotton mill, 4o have a capacity of 40,000 spindles, is being subscribed in Fall river, Massachusetts. In certain parts of Germany the peasantry consider it good luck to meet a pig. It isn't considered good luck in this country, that is, if it is in a car and you want a seat. The wajjes of mechanics, artisans and day laborers in Chicago will be twenty per cent, higher the coming season than last season, and the price of building material ten per cent, higher. Neverthe less, there promises to be great activity in building. A thousand people per month are added to the city from immigration alone, and the demand . for house room and businesssites is constantly growing, more especially in the suburban towns, where building is very livelv. The prompt return to Switzer land of the obnoxious women sent to the United States from that country has created considerable comment abroad, but according to the New York Herald it was a wholesome though nauseating dose. If Secretary Blaine continues ad ministering the same medicine to all countries that endeavor to make the United States a sort of penal colony, he will deserve the gratitude of the country for cen turies to come. Since 1871 the grain crops of the United States have been valu ed at the enormous sum of &10,000, 000,000, or an average of $1,000, 000,000 per annum. Of this total, abfcit one-hair or S5,000,000,000 has been the value of the corn crop, while the wheat crop during the same period has aggregated a value of $3,500,000,000. In the year 1SS0 the United States ex ported 144,493,007 bushels wheat valued at 171,420,195, and 7,12S, 1G4 barrels flour, invoiced at $39, G13.S47. XEYV TO-DAY. Notipe.
