It is not an uncommon thing to hear young men complain that their early schooling was dificieut in quantity, poor in quality, or if neither of these was wasted through boyish indiffer ence and iolly. They would get on oetter in life if they knew more, they are free to admit, but they do not see- that they are daily wasting, opportuni ties which, if improved, would in a few years give them a fairly good edu cation. They think themselves too old to learn, and spend more time regret ting their laok of knowledge than would suffice to give them the knowl edge they need. It is said that the father of- Professor Sumner, of Yale College, could neither write nor lead "When he came to this country, a young English mechanic. Within twenty years thereafter he was known as one of the best read men in Hartford, one of the most cultivated communities in the country. Instead of wasting his time in idle regrets for his deficient schooling, he learned to read, and read to good- purpose. In a similar way many of the best, most honored, and successful men our country h:is known begun their acquaintance with letters after reaching manhood; and there is no reason why the moat illiter ate mechanic in our land, if possessed m natural ability and a sincere pnr pose, may not increase his enj.i)ynyeut in life, his opportunities for improv ing his social and financial condition, and the chances-of his-family for the highest success in lifer by an honest effort tc retrieve by study the disad1 vantages by which early poverty or lack of educational opportunities has surrounded him. Tracing the Hudson Under the Sea. The Atlantic Coast Pilot, published by the United States coast survey, ex plains the origin of the curious deep holes met with along the New Jersey coast, some distance out at sea. Of these mudholes," as they are termed, nine are known to navigators, the deep est and the furthest out being the hundred and forty-five fathom hole. 83 miles southeast of Sandy Hook light. These remarkable depressions, as the Pilot points out, bear the ap pearance of having been originally a continuation seaward of the Hudson river valley. There were in all prob ability scooped out by the river being forced to run through narrow gorges. Several of these gorges can still be traced running almost parallel with the Now Jersey shore line. In fact, the soundings .along the coast would seem to indicate that the whole coast line, ages ago, was many miles sea ward of its position to-day; that then the Hudson river entered the ocean at least a hundred miles southeast of its present mouth, and that the whole continent has since subsided, the sea encroaching further and further in land, as the country gradually sank. BroxsoiTs Coinot. This small periodical comet has passed its perihelion and is approach ing the earth. It resembles a nebulous star, and moves so rapidly by one star and another star that with little op tical aid the observer can see the change in an hour's watch. Its motion is from the constellation Camelopardalus to that of Ursa Major. After April 21 the comet is circumpo lar and does not set in this latitude. Following the ephomeris of Schulse, the comet will be nearest the earth on May 10. Its place at that time wil be among the small stars in the head of the Greit Bear. In the United States district court at. Portland yesterday Judge Deady decided adverse to Bancroft fe Co. on a demurrer in the school book case now pending in that court. This will have a tendency to increase the pos sibility that tho county Superintend ents will have to cast a vote on the question of books,by the 20th of June. 2- Sond your subscription for the Actoriax another year. Columbia River Salmon.- The American Grocer.- There has been a great falling off of late in the demand for sal mon, and prices are extremely low, compared with those of two or three 3Tears ago. One reason for this change we believe to be the way in which the reputation of well known brands has been sacri ficed. Packers on the Columbia river who have hitherto enjoyed a high reputation have latterly put up anything in the shape of fish' and labeled it "Columbia River" salmon, and which being placed on the market has been returned by dealers who have complained that the' could not sell it. Not only is this complaint found in the home market but we find the same thing causing comment elsewhere. The following appeared in the Sydney (New South Wales) Trade Review and Price Current Feb. 20. uTo aggravate, the loss to le gitimate shippers and buyers, shipments of "spent' salmon are sent down, which of course serious ly affect prices, and in many in stances the name of well-known packers are used (initials only being varied) on the most abomin able trash. These are matters for our American friends to think ot they have a right to do their business in such a way as they see fit, and we would be sorry to see a falling off in trade between usbut depend upon it that whilst such practices arc- persisted in orders are not likely to be received from this quarter." The "loss" referred to, "aggravated" by the above mentioned practice, is stated in the same paper as having been occa sioned by excessive shipments, which Icacfe us to another reason for the lowness of prices here viz : excessive packing. Packers if they regard their true interests will on ' no account allow the quality of their packing to deterio ate. They must also curtail the supply so as to conform to the demand (and restriction as to quality would have a tendency in this direction) or they must take measures to increase the consump tion. This latter step we consider practicable as it is a fact that in this country to-day there are many dealers who never saw or heard of canned salmon. They must make their goods more widely known.
