2 ffte gtoiltg sbSTAmL ASTORIA. OREGON: . C. IRELAND JEmtor. TUESDAY May 0. I87fl. Suggested by the Wreck. The inventive genius of Mr. Ford, a resident of Albina, has evolved a plan by which he claims the removal of grounded vessels would 'be a com paratively cheap and easy uiatter in streams where a current exists. The Bee says his modesty alone deters him from putting his patent idea into prac tical shape, and he allows us to pub-gj lish the same for the benefit of any who may wish to take advantage of it. Where a vessel is grounded on sand the method proposed is by hydraulic pressure; to use the machinery of the vessel for this purpose, with nozzles long enough to reach the sand, shaped to the hull of the vessel; when it is claimed that the action of the current will carry off the sand as it is removed hy the hydraulic pressure. In the event of the vessel being grounded on clay, it is proposed to use steam in stead of water. The apparatus could be conviently kept on tugs for pur poses of relief. Mr. Ford has made experiments on a small scale and found the plan to work like a charm, while prominent nautical men to whom the idea has been propounded have ex pressed themselves very favorably for it. "Washington Territory- Tacoma Herald. The first settlements of this territory were made in 182S by the Hudson bay company. The first American settlers came in 184:5, since then, there has been a slow but steady increase of population. Owing to the remoteness of this from the thickly populated portions of our country, the tide of immi gration has, as yet, barely reached us. Out of the many long trains of migrating people wJq have ..crossed. the plains, and the peopled snips nhiiTSoTlliHiither by way of Cape Horn, but few adventurous . seekers for homes have reached the north-western coast. The population of this territory now figures up to something near to 51,000 souls. The native tribes of Indians which are scattered about the coun try are but the remnants of a dying power and pride. They are gradually losing their tribal dis tinctions, and soon the single word Indian will describe their birth, parentage, history and fate. The tide of immigration that is flowinjr into our territory is large beyond precedent. "While the Puget sound basin is having its population gradually increased, eastern Washington is being set- . tied with remarkable rapidity. New homes, new farms, new faces and new industries are the order of the day in this new country. Time, exppsiencc and perseverance have proven that the almost limit less prairies of rich, arable lands in this new country are unrivalled on the Pacific slope. Its climate Jb very healthy, and its winters are generally mild, with warm summers, and delightful spring and fall weather. Without hesi tancy, without fear of misleading our readers, we would say to the homeless and honest laborer, come to the land of promise, and claim your inheritance a home in aland of plenty; a residence among a good class of whole-souled, pro gressive people. We received an annoymous article last Thursday at 11 p. si., says the editor of the Salem Mercury. lt is a rule .of this office not to receive any thing to which there is no name at tached, but we have concluded to de part from our custom in this instance out of courtesv to the female sex, of which this is a member. Mother and child doing well." Now see here, Wilbur, that's too thin. Do you pre tend to say you don't know the author of that item? Well, "'tis a smart child knows its -" Too true; too true. Following is the new land law passed by congress and approved by President Hayes on the 3d of March : j That before the final proof shall be sub-! miueu uy any person claiming to enter agricultural lands under the law pro viding for pre-emption or homestead en tries, such person shall file with the proper land-office a notice of his or her intention to make such proof, stating therein the description of hinds to be en tered, and the names of the witnesses by whom the necessary facts shall be established. Upon the filing of such notice, the register hall publish a notice, that such application has been made once a week for the period of thirty days, in a news paper to he by him designated as pub lished nearest to such lands, and he shall post such notice in some conspicuous place in his office for the same period. Such notice shall contain the names of the witnesses as stated in the applica tion. At the expiration of said period of thirty days, the claimant shall be en titled to make prool heretofore prescrib ed by law. The secretary of the interior shall make nil necessary rule for giv ing effect to the foregoing provisions. When I gaze into the stars said Carlyle they look down with pity from their serene and silent space, like eyes glistening'with tears over the little lot of man. Thousands of gen erations all ;is noisy as our own, have been swallowed up by time, and there remains no record of them any more. Yet Arcturus and Orion, Sirius and Pleiades, are still shining in their bright courses, clear and young as when the shepherd first noted them in the plain of Shinar. An impromptu mock auction sale of women was amusing and profitable at first in a .Racine, Wisconsin, church fair. The young men bid liberally for the attractive girls, and it was all very funnj indeed until an ugly but influential sister was put up. The autioiieer was compelled to knock her down at 25 cents, and she was so angry that she put on her things and went home. The Sentinel tells of a working Reverend in southern Oregon, Rev. J. H.
