The Order to Appear in Regalia in Astoria To-day- Literary and Musical Exercises. The sixtieth anniversary of Odd Fellowship in America will be celebra ted to-day wherever the flag of the Three-Links float in this union, by some sort of ceremonial, in many instances grand and imposing. Beaver Lodge No. 35, which now numbers a membership of nearly one hundred, will suitably observe the day The fraternity will meet at the hall at ten o'clock a. m. sharp, and after the services laid down by th National Lodge will form in proces sion, preceded by the Astoria Brass 23anct, .and after marching through the principal streets will halt at Metro politan hall, where an oration will be delivered by Rev. J. T. Wolfe, and where a choir of ladies and gentlemen will entirta;n the public in a credit able manner. All sojourners of the Order in the city are respectfully in vited to join the procession, and the public in general afe invited to be present at the exercises. The origin of Odd Fellowship is un doubtedly of great an tiquity. It has been said by Mr. Cooper of Scotland, an Antiquarian and a man of learn ing, who had made deep research into the origin of Odd Fellowship, that it was first established by the Roman soldiers during the reign of Nero, in the year 55. At that time they were called Fellow Citizens. The name of Odd Fellows was given them by Titus Caesor in the year 79 34 years after its formation, and just 1,800 3Tears ago. This name was given them from the singularity of their notions, and from their knowing e-ch other by night or by day. At the same time he presented them with a dispensation engraven on a plate of virgin gold, bearing different emblems, the same that are yet used and are recognized by Odd Fellows. This was presented as a pledge of perpetual friendship. We hear of Odd Fellows being established in the Spanish dominions as early as the 5th century, and in the 6th century the King of Portu gal founded the order in his king dom. In the 12th century it was established in France, from thence i very soon found its way into Eng land, where it became established principally, through the exertion of Sir John De Neville and live Knights of France. This Lodge was called the "Loyal Grand Lodge of Honor," and was in existence until the reign of George III, when some of the sub ordinate lodges desiring to form a union, and others opposing it. the "Loyal Grand Lodge of Honor" dis solved itself, and from its ruins arose the ''Loyal Ancient Odd Fellows," the "Union Odd Fellows" and the "Manchester Unity Odd Fellows." Most of these orders are still extant. The Union Odd Fellows were located in the city of London. Some of the members of this society living in Manchester, formed themselves into a Lodge about the vear 1800, and con tinued auxiliary to the Union Order for a certain time when a separation occurred on account of some difference arising between them, when this lodge declared itself independent, and has over since been known as the "Inde pendent Order of Odd Fellows." Odd Fellowship in the United States is of much more recent date, the first Lodge in this country was established in the city of New York in 18'c)6, and was known as the "Shakespear Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows." It was in existence but a few 3rears. Another at tempt was made in the year 1816, a Lodge was formed and given the name of " Prince Regents Lodge," which was of shorter duration than the former. The next ett'ort put forth in this direction met with better re sults. This was in the year 1819, April 20th, at Baltimore. The cliarter "Wildy. John Welch, John Duncan, members of this Lodge were Thus. John Cheatham and Richard Rush worth. This Lodge received its war rant, dispensation, or charter, from Duke of York Lodge of the Inde pendent Order of Odd Fellows, held at Preston, England, and was di rected to Washington Lodge, No. 1. From this small beginning with five members in 1819, we now, in less than 60 years, embrace in our order in the United States 48 Grand Lodges, about 7,000 subordinate Lodges such as this, and a membership numbering 500,000. Surely Odd Fellowship must have something commendable in it, or its growth would not have been so rapidly, so unprecedented in the annals of history. At the pres ent time there is no civilized country on the globe that is unacquainted with Odd Fellowship. Wherever civ- iliration is the most advanced, there . W.VV-.. Wolfe, and hear something of the objects and purposes of the order, as well as be entertained by the music and exer cises which will be held at Metropoli tan hall. The Virginia state senate has re fused to enact the bill making it a felony to commit an assault with a cowhide. The bill fixed the penalty at not less than five nor more than ten years in the state prison, together vith a fine not exceeding $500 Only one senator spoke in opposition to the measure, which was nevertheless tabled by a vote of 12 to 10. The Maine Legislature intended to cut the governors salary down to $1,500 a year, but bunglingly worded the act so as to empower him to draw that amount every three months. Among Boston's April fools were eighteen insurance men, who went to the Parker house, arrayed in evening dress, to eat an imaginary dinner. NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
