While Edwin Booth was giving his solilonuv in the last act of llichard I XL, at McViekers theatre, in Chicago Wednesday night, a shot was lirod at him by a man in the rallery. Booth sat still, until after about thive seconds 4i second shot was tired, when he rote and started toward the left wing of the stage, pointing out as he went the would-be assassin. The latter was at one seized, and but for the interven tion of ofii-ers would have been Tough ly handled. He slates that his name is Mart Gray, that he is 23 years old, and a dry goods clerk of St. Louis, that he has been three years prepar ing to do this deed, is greatly sup prised that he failed, and "that his fail ure to kill Booth is the only part of the attempt which he regrets, hie re cuses to state the cause of his action, but says that his reasons will be re garded as sufficient T:tciiic Coast Dispatches. Salnskin has made a confession giving minute details of the Perkins murder, implicating Moses who was ready all the time to fight the whites if he thought ke would be successful. It is very evident from his account of after events that Yakima, and the ad joining valleys, had a very narrow escape from one of the most bloody massacres. Nothing but the presence of the gunboats, ordered on the Colun -bia river by Gen. Howard, saved the lives of alltiie settlers in these valleys. The people here are very indignant at the treachery of chief Moses during the time of the council held at Priest Rapids in September last. When Gen. Howard demanded the murderers of the Perkins family, Moses said he 'did not know where they were, but would find them out and deliver them up to the authorities. According to this confession of Salnskin, the very murderers were present at the council at the very moment Moses denied Knowledge of their whereabouts. Mo.-es afterward ordered them away .and they left. A second report be;iring date on the "23d at Yakima says that an engage ment took place on the 18th of this month, between the Indians and sheriffs posse eight miles avove the Okanagan river. It is not likely that this occurrence will lead to any gen eral trouble, as it was participated in only br relatives of the prisoners. If the horses and prisoners are re turned, in a few days everything will be all right; if not, trouble will ensue. Events may be looked forward to with interest. A correspondent of Oregonian says: "I am going home ; have left instructions for you to get lirst news." Gen. Howard has given inst notions to Capt. Winters, of The Dalles, en route to Yakima, to proceed at once to Fort Simcoe and move hip command toward the scene of action. He is instructed to investigate and report the condit ; , -iffairs. Mean while Major Green goes into camp with two companies of cavalry, and will hold himself in readiness for call. The favorite amusements of a wan in Sonthwick, Mass., was to seat all the women of his household in a row and shoot at a target placed just above their heads. That was his way of maintaining discipline; but it brought hina to jail. The London Tablet's Irish cr- 1 respondent shvs that Irish Roman , Catholics do not relish apostates from the one true church, and hence there is n onthusinsm ns t,o Tom Moore's centenary. Two persons in Astoria, 111., were noisoned bv arsenic in cheese from the factory in that town. How much of tlmfc chuese cmtilins arsenic, and , , x , , whoro it Una been sent, have become lnteromg questions. The Pope has sent $1,000 in aid of the sufferers from the inundation at iSzegedin. It is especially note worthy that in almost every case of public disaster since the beginning of his reign Leo xm. has been among the first to send material aid to the sufferers. The German trichinosis statistics for 1877 show a decline in the number of cases. Whereas the proportion in 1S7G was one in 2,000 pit's examined, in 1S77 it was only one in 2,800; 343 cases appeared in bacon imported from America, and 138 persons were known to have suffered from thrichi nosis. This is from the advertisement of a concert in Machias, N. Y.: "Miss Julia A. Moure will delight with two hours of song, including the latest and best 'Grandfather's Clock,' which will be sung with a power and pathos seldom heard in this country, even from the much-advertised Italian opera singers." In California it is proposed to pass around a pledge as follews: "I do pledge my honor as a truthful and honest man that I will not patronize coolie labor, or any person who em ploys such labor, and that I will make diligent inquiry when purchasing any commodity; and this pledge I take without mental reservation."
