Saturday morning, m the Kansas branch of the Hannibal and St. Joseph railroad, as freight train JNTo. 7, west bound, was run ning down a heavy grade, a trestle bridge was discovered on fire. It was impossible to check the train, and the engine passed nearly over, but 14 cars broke through one aftei another, piling in immense wreck in the creek below. All the car were soon enveloped in flames, am: with their contents entirely con sumed. The engineer stood at his post until the hist, only saving himself by jumping as the engiiu turned over. The secretary of war has ad dressed a letter to Gen. Sherman, directing that in case Sitting Bull or any of his followers cross from British possessions, they be held as prisioners of war until further orders from the president. In view of this action, Sitting Bull and his band have voluntarily sub jected themselves to the authority of Great Britian and ceased to be subjects of the United States. They will not now be permitted, even under peaceable intentions, to recross the frontier. On Tuesday morning a fire "was discovered in No. 10 level of the Wellington coal mine on De parture bay. It was supposed to have been extinguished on the following day, and on Thursday morning when 25 or 30 miners en tered the level to' resume work, a terrific explosion occurred, blow ing the working apparatus of the level into ruins, killing 11 men and injuring others seriously. No. 10 level will have to be flooded as the mine is on fire in that vicinity. The Vancouver Coal company's men have stopped work and gone to assist in the work of rescue. The scene at the pits mouth is heartrending; wives and children weeping for husbands and fathers, and parents for children. The Gloucester Fishermen. There is wailing and lamentation again in the households of Gloucester on account of the widows and orphans, made by the last gale on the Georges Banks, whither fourteen vessels and their crews, numbering 155 men, went to meet their death. Since 18G0 Glou cester has lost almost a thousand of its noble fishermen who had gone in quest of the treasures of the sea. The late calamity has left some sixty fami lies in the most destitute circumstan ces. The condition of these families is said to be most pitiable; but the noble work of charity now going on is coming to the rescue of these unfortu nate victims of the treacherous sea. A Boston correspondent says: "The Georges licet has been unfortunate since 18G0. In the great gale of 1802, fifteen vessels and 120 men were lost ; in 1871, nineteen vessels and 140 men were lost; but the late gale was the most unfortu nate that has happened in the history of the place. Georges Hanks or Shoals, where the fishermen jo every winter, is al wa vs a dangerous resort. 1 1 is situated about one hundred and twenty miles east-southeast of Boston, (and Glouces ter is a few miles from Boston) on the edge ol the Gulf stream, which runs pajt it with a tide of great velocity. According to the authorities, in some sections of this shoal there is little water. In one place old bankers have seen it above waters. At other places the shoal has eight fathoms of water. It is on the outer edges of this shoal that the fish are caught, the warm waters of the Gulf stream attract ing them; and the vessels, when they encounter them, drop here their anchors. A storm on the Georges is a terrible affair. Nobodj' h:is ever seen a Georges vessel lost. It is supposed she gets turned over and over until she breaks up, and the debris is either covered by the sand or drawn into the depths of the Gulf stream and carried away to unknown pirts.
