At four o'clock fcunday morning Cant. Flavel went to the n reck on board the Columbia; the Astoria and Hrenham having laid by her all night. The morn ing being thick and heavy notlung could be seen ol the stranded ship, and iiour or ho later the Columbia arrived with more passengers from the wreck, and i:ai xkws. Everybody had left the: ship before the i departure of the Astoria from the iIanl. excepting Capt. Carroll. Pilot Doig, and ; a few seamen who were endeavoring to i save the baggage. The bust boat to leave the shin was capsized and eleven ! men were drowned. This broke con- i nectiou and left Capt. Carroll and Pilot, Doig still on board, with breakers loll-j ing clear oer the ship, following is a list of the crew known to be lost. The ! list was furnished by Purser Peck of the ' Republic: Jlugh Lcnnon, R. Davis, J. Connor. Win. .Johnson, Peter Iiodgers, Thos. McEvoy, J5am. Cant. Carroll arrived in the latter, and all the officers and crew (except those, so unfortunately lost), were now in the city. Three men were left on the island "to attend to things. We visited Capt. Carroll and purser Peck, on board the California, where -CAPT. CARUOLL. MADE THIS FOLLOW ING STATKMENT. "1 gave the steamer over to Pilot Poig sit the Automatic buoy, at 11 0 Friday night It was char starlight, not a rip safety. The fir.st and third officers, freight clerk and myself were on the i lookout 1 had a )air ot glasses, and was tirst to discover Sand Island, and found the bearing all right 1 reported i Sand Island to the pilot, be had notseen j it. We ran along probably two minutes, i 1 told the pilot thought he was getting too close to the Island and he had better haul her up. He replied: 1 think we are not in far enough.'' A minute after I told him to port his helm, and put it hard a port, as I think j-ou are getting too near to the Island.be made no reply but run along about live minutes then he put his helm hard a port. The ves elsvinging up, heading toward Asto ria, but the ebb tide caught her on the larboard bow. and being so much near er the Island than he expected set her on the spit She went on so lightly that verv lew knew it. but as the lute was j falling we had no chance to get the ms iel otr that night. The next tide, on Saturday moining, was a small one and we were still unable to get off, as the barometerwas going down, indicating a storm, 1 sent Mr. Peck, the purser, in a small beat, to Fort Cauby tor assistance, and boats to remove the mssenirers. l he uiiis lirennam an v arrived and -sent a small boat to steamer. The tugs Columbiaand Shubrick had by this time also arrived each tak ing a load of passengers. The Hronham made two trips. The entire crew remained on board. I made .arrangements with Captain 1? lave I to have three tuirs down to the steamer at high water that night. In the mean time I had the crew employed, heaving coal overboard, to lighten the steamer. At eight o'clock .Saturday night a south west gale started in, making a heavy nisi. Then chopped to the southeast .about midnisliL At this time the ship washing easy, making no water, but the heavy sea prevented the tugs from rendering any assistance. The heavy wind and sea 'drove her higher on the spit. Shortly after midnight the ship began to work breaking all the steam pipes and disabling the engines. A few yoliintsvr p-issengers that remained bv the ship during tlie night were landed at six o'clock this (Sunday) nior.iin on .Sand island, followed by the crew, as tie hip.at; o'clock, was breaking up and it ivas dangerous to remain on board. T he last boai lett the ship about 10 0 a. al and going ashore the steering-oar broke, and the boat which contained fourteen men was capsized.in theserf. and all but three were drowned. Free coach to and from time a heavy sea boarded the ship which carried away all the state rooms on the starboard side, and literally gutted the dining-room, broke up the floor of Social-hall, carrying away the piano. Afterwards several seas boarded her forward carrying away the starboard forward-guard and ollieers rooms for ward ; and the steerage deck. The same 'Sea carried a number of horses ovcr- UO.l'd. "L remained until 5 ocloek this (Sun- da evening, when the pilot and my self launched a life-boat and came , ashore, Before leaving the vessel I went into the boys rooms looking ovei , the ship, and there found a waiter, worn , out, badlv scared, and brought him I with us ashore. All valuables and ship ' papers 1 think are saved. I shall re turn U the island in the morning and Lnftvst From the Wreck. The steamer Shubrick, Capt. Kortz, returned rom the wreck at four o'clock yesterday afternoon. The vcel lays in about the same position ;u- she did on Suiuhu. The water is smoother. A great leal of baggage is coming ashore on Sand iland,ar.d all along the weather bea-h to Sheal water bay. 'I he weather has cleared up considerably. Duiing Sunday night fishermen pirates broke open a great many trunks and stole a great deal of properly, but there is now a p.ttKci. guard oi marines irom ine Co.win and a detachment f troops from the torts, guarding the ilaml.
