The Missouri border towns do not seem io have any great lking for the parent state. St. Louis lias for some time signified a de sire to be turned over to Illinois, and now Kansas city wants to be Teceived into the embrace of Kansas. By name and location, it is contented, Kansas city belongs to Kansas state which seems plausible enough, unless the town receives a new designation. The effort of some good peo ple in central New York to rid that locality of the plague spot, the Onedia community, ought to be successful. For over a quarter j of a Rfmfiirv tliH. institution hns ! cursed by its presence the commu nities about it, and its blasting effects upon good morals are con tinually appearing. It is to New York state what Utah is to the nation, and the great common wealth should unite most lieartily in the effort to rid itself of such a damning institution. The move ment is organized by some of the strongest and best elements of so ciety in that portion of the state, and with proper help will win. If the genius of our political institu tions gives license to such aggre gated disregard of moral and hu man law, we cannot justly frown upon those individuals who violate these same laws. These remarks apply to Astoria. '".Keep II Out of the Papers." Cine'nnctt Sa'urde-i Xfgkt. '"For heaven's sake! don't let it get iuto the papers," is the first cry of a person caught in a mean scrape. Keep .it out of the papers and it is all right. No matter how contemptible or dishon est the position may be, or how much reason the offender may have for shame, remorse and coutrition, if the circum stance can he kept from 'cormorants of the press," as the people who have good reasons to be afraid of newspaper reporters sometimes call them, lie is .tranquil and happy. We are no cham pion for that extreme license of the jiress that is sometimes displayed, hut we have noticed that the ones who cry o t loudest against newspaper disclos ures are generally those whose own lives and acts would not bear very close examination. People who live clean, straightforward lives, have little io fear from the newspapers. Another scare about the world coming to an end is on the tapis in London. We have recovered from the efFect3 of the one we had a few .months ago, and can alford to smile at -the London savans who pretend to know more than any human being has a right to know, no matter how large his head is. It is a pretty .vcll ascer tained fact that the world is bound to come to an end -sometime, but it is perfectly safe to make preparations to honestly pay the note that will come -due nent year. Bailey, of the Banbury News, hits this phase of ec centricity in a very neat vrtiy. He who made a fair living out of his pe knew one of these Second Adventists culiar notions. "He used to borrow a handful of coals and a pound or two sugar and two or three logs of wood .of his neighbors, giving as an excuse that the world was coming to an end .so quickly that there was no aise in .a great stock of provisions. He lived one whole winter in this way, but in the spring it was suggested to him that there was not people enough in that region who sympathized with him to make -it an object for him to .live there any 'longer. It .is rill very well to pray to God with unctuous eloquence provided you don't contra dict your own prayers, by preying.on your neighbors." Buckskin gloves are -dear, be cause tu"eIecr is the Luck's .skin. A New Industry " Dolly Oreqom'xin, March SOlh. Thursday evening a new and rakish-looking craft, the Emily Stephens, arrived in our harbor from "Westport, towed by the tug Rip Van AViukle. The dimen sions of this vessel are as follews: length, 87 feet over all; beam 21 feet 10 ;nches; depth of hold, 8 feet. She was built for the halibut fishery and has ten compartments, or ice chests, m her hold, in which to pack and preserve fish. In the east this is done, and fish is suc cessfully conveyed ever 1000 miles to market. Thoroughness and dura bility appear in the build and rig of this little vessel, and reflect credit upon the commander, Cap tain Alex. A Henderson, under whose superintendent the work has been carried forward. This beauti ful vessel was built at "Westport by Mr. Stephens; her iron work was furnished by Messrs. Arndt& Ferchen of Astoria, and her sails wore made by A. M. Johnson of Astoa. Indeed, from truck to keelson, she isOregonian, undgoes forth the pioneer of fishermen, Indeed, why not? Did the eastern J fishermen but know our valuable fish'ng grounds, mild climate and exemption from the perils incident to fishing on the Grand Banks, man' of them would speedily leave the stormy Atlantic for our Pacific and prolific waters. "We are per suaded that here is a large and profitable industry, which promises satisfactory returns to capitalists, and we heartily wish Captain Hen derson and his orew success.
