Rain, rain, rain, all the day long .yesterday. The indians hung at Pendleton were all "spiritualistic" m 'their "beliefs. Nasby has got his orders from the P. 0. D.tc-sell money orders for silver to the extent of five dollars to any one person. The first money order sold for silver at the Astoria Post-ofhce was made out for Mrs. M. F. JRodgers of this city on Monday. The regular meeting of the board of delegates this month comes on the 34th, that being the 4th Friday. Jan Siary has five Fridays this year. The Europa and the Nairnshire 'have both completed cargo at Astoria, but had not cleared yesterday when The Astokian reporter closed'his re port at the Custom house. - & "Sec. Curtis is entitled to a vote of thanks for the extra nice penman-2-ship displayed upon the memorial to be presented to the widow of the de ceased brotbcr'Ferdinand Ferrell. Dr. J. O'Brien who has been ill for fa long time is again able to be about the city and attend to business a3 usual. Doc is gettingready to put -up another "building on the roadway. One of the most sociable parties that has yet been given by Worsley "Was that of night before last. -The -music came from Portland, and will be here for the regular soiree to-mor-- row evening. The Robert Lees, 20 feet six in ches; Shenir, 19 feet six inches; and -the "Wastwater, 18 feet six inches, were taken to sea yesterday fore noon, the first was towed out by the Astoria; the second by the Bren ham; and the third by the Columbia. The most remarkable instance on record of a public building constructed - tor contract price, is that of tho Wal lamet engine house, in Portland. The council appropriated $8,000, and cthe cost was $7,995 75. What the council will do with the $4 2c left on hand, is the conundrum. January Gth was the Christmas of the Greek church, which has-not yet adopted the Gregorian calendar, but still adheres to the '-old style of com puting time. The occasion was appro- priately celebrated by the Russian, and other adherents of the faith re- 'sidmjr in San Francisco. Lambert's brass band of Astoria - is getting so it can play sunthiif, now, .you hear me; says Ben. Worsley yes terday; and we believe this, from Ben., to be a fact. -At least ?we 've lieard so from the band room, for sev eral daj's past. "Well, go on, boys; and make all the advancement you can, now; times are too dull for any thin sr else. Our reporter was in error yester day "in stating'ihat Mrs. "Benedict, for merly of Ivnappton, was at the Occi dent en rouic to San Francisco. It was a different lady entirely, but the similarity of names, and a mistake in the entry on the hotel register lead to the error. Miss3S. C. Benedict was -the lady referred to, and she is on a business mission to Astoria. See.no t&ioe of-dress cuttiiig and fitting. Man's Faithful Friend. TSvery reader of the classics remem bers that passage of the Odyssey (one of the finest passages in ancient poe try) where the -sorrow-laden Ulysses, in the garb of a beggar, returns to his rock-bound home to find that every one has forgotten him save his faith ful dog, Argus, whom, aged and full of sores, the neglectful servants have nun" out to die amid the refuse of the stables. Alone of the ungrateful com-' pany he recognizes his mastec, and too weak to bark or to lick the hand ex tended to him, lays down his shaggy ear and fawns with his 4aJlfor joy The Astorian of to-day .prints the story of a dog living -within an hours ride of 2ew York city, in the midst of the bustle and workaday life of a Long island country village, whose fidelity would seem to rival that of Argus, though n a different way. If the statements of fifty eye-witnesses are to be believed, Charley Dykeman's dog did, for more than three weeks,, mount guard over the grave of his dead master in Hempstead cemetery the greater portion of the time with out food and in an atmosphere occa sionally dropping to 4 deg. below-zero. People have tried to get him away from the grave, by coaxing, by en treaties, and by tempting offers of food, and even by friendly violence, but, except in the last instance without success. Evidently dog nature has not changed in three thousand years. The Astoria-Sal cm Railroad. A large and influential meeting, says the Yamhill Reporter, of the -citizens t)f Astoria is to be held, at the instance of Mr. Gaston, to consider -the feasi bility, desirability, practiVJility and payability, of having a narrow gauge railroad from the Wallamet, through the Nehalem to Astoria. A great deal depends upon Astoria in this matter. A far more practicable and direct route than the one at present depicted upon the map as the projected line, as any-; one acquinted with the country and -not interested would admit, could be- made across the Nehalem instead x following its great bend. There is a, fine opening at or between the Misha wakaand Fishhawk settlements,, and then to the east of Saddle mountain to Astoria. The winds held high carnival in this vicinity last 'night, and many were the tall forest, trees which bowed their branches in dust for next summers conflagration. We hear of no damages resulting from the blow. It is pleasant to contemplate the immense increase of our exports over our imports, and to know that we are not only a self-sustaining people, but have an abundance to spare for less fortunate people elsewhere. Read The Astorian figures and iiacts, in another cohimu. - Capt Thtrne 'believes that the party given at Worsleys hall Tuesday evening was in Jionor of the event of the Califoraias quick passage to Sitka and back. We thought the California honored the party very much, at all events. Our reporter -nntice'd Capt. Thorue, his first officer, Mr. , Bur- serHughcs, and the chief and assistant engineers Messrs. Bochau andWass, present from that -steamer. Capt. E. Morton, of the San Francisco ferry boat Capital, has had his license suspended for 15 days, by the local boaid of inspectors of steam vessels, "for attempting to cross the bow of the steamer Ba3T City as she was entering her slip, thereby endan gering the lives of the passengers." This is as it should be, says the !Ncws, font it would be better 5F it wnra 15 years. What punishment is therein lo days' suspension? The war department has at' last discovered that the weather reports are tif some use to this coast, and on fthe lGth probabilities were received far the first time through the associ ated press, and published in the morn ing papers at San Francisco receiving their eastern news through that med- - mm. This is a measure long advc- catedin these columns, and it is in-ati . tying to see that the claims of this coast to the benefits of the Signal service-reports have at last beenTecog nized. m;.51'0!11 ,ysters in every sUle at fccliiiieers See advertisement.
