was a different lady entirely, but the
similarity of names, and a mistake in
the entry on the hotel register lead to

Man's Faithful Friend.
TSvery reader of the classics remem
bers that passage of the Odyssey (one
of the finest passages in ancient poe
try) where the -sorrow-laden Ulysses,
in the garb of a beggar, returns to his
rock-bound home to find that every
one has forgotten him save his faith
ful dog, Argus, whom, aged and full
of sores, the neglectful servants have
nun" out to die amid the refuse of the
stables. Alone of the ungrateful com-'
pany he recognizes his mastec, and too
weak to bark or to lick the hand ex
tended to him, lays down his shaggy
ear and fawns with his 4aJlfor joy
The Astorian of to-day .prints the
story of a dog living -within an hours
ride of 2ew York city, in the midst of
the bustle and workaday life of a Long
island country village, whose fidelity
would seem to rival that of Argus,
though n a different way. If the
statements of fifty eye-witnesses are
to be believed, Charley Dykeman's
dog did, for more than three weeks,,
mount guard over the grave of his
dead master in Hempstead cemetery
the greater portion of the time with
out food and in an atmosphere occa
sionally dropping to 4 deg. below-zero.
People have tried to get him away
from the grave, by coaxing, by en
treaties, and by tempting offers of
food, and even by friendly violence,
but, except in the last instance without
success. Evidently dog nature has
not changed in three thousand years.
The Astoria-Sal cm Railroad.
A large and influential meeting, says
the Yamhill Reporter, of the -citizens
t)f Astoria is to be held, at the instance
of Mr. Gaston, to consider -the feasi
bility, desirability, practiVJility and
payability, of having a narrow gauge
railroad from the Wallamet, through
the Nehalem to Astoria. A great deal
depends upon Astoria in this matter.
A far more practicable and direct route
than the one at present depicted upon
the map as the projected line, as any-;
one acquinted with the country and
-not interested would admit, could be-
made across the Nehalem instead x
following its great bend. There is a,
fine opening at or between the Misha
wakaand Fishhawk settlements,, and
then to the east of Saddle mountain
to Astoria.
The winds held high carnival in
this vicinity last 'night, and many
were the tall forest, trees which
bowed their branches in dust for next
summers conflagration. We hear of
no damages resulting from the blow.
It is pleasant to contemplate the
immense increase of our exports over
our imports, and to know that we are
not only a self-sustaining people, but
have an abundance to spare for less
fortunate people elsewhere. Read

party given at Worsleys hall Tuesday

honored the party very much, at all

Capt. E. Morton, of the San
Francisco ferry boat Capital, has had
his license suspended for 15 days, by
the local boaid of inspectors of steam
vessels, "for attempting to cross the
bow of the steamer Ba3T City as she
was entering her slip, thereby endan
gering the lives of the passengers."
