The steamship Geo. W. Elder yesterday brought a very large mail. It was thought that boats would connect from Portland and The Dalles yesterday. The steamship 5daho will leave this city perhaps to-ciorrow, for San Francisco dirtct. m - -The schooner 'Enterprise sailed from San Francisco -for Shoalwater bay on the 16th. Mr. A. F. Stream, Fish Commis- aioner for Washington territory, was in the city yesterday. -- The Oregon City Enterprise has added much to its appearance, by adopting a patent outside. A quantity of giant powder was landed at Astoria and stored in a safe place a few days ago. When our re porter asked for what purpose? The -answer was, briefly: "To blow up vaaiys. - Mr. C. J. Trenchard "had a night of it" with burglars, at the store of Trenchard & Upshur, recently. He succeeded in shootinir one of the fel lows while they were working to open the safe, and with the exclamatien: "My God I'm shot!" the thieves broke for the front door. Mr. Trenchard then put another shot into the gang, from an up-stairs window, and brought vthem to a halt; when he awoke, and found that he ha&been wrestling with .a.nightniarc. Letter From New Hampshire. THE "WEATHER TROPICS, EAST AND WEST. THANKSGIVING AND CHRIST MAS IN NEW ENGLAND. THE NORTHERN PACIFIC RAIL ROAD. A LATE IDEA -CONCERNING LAND GRANTS. West Swanzey, N. H., Jan. G. 1 have spent the past two months rusti cating among the mountains of New Hampshire and Vermont, and "hence have very little news of interest for Astorians. About a foot of snow covers the ground. Yesterday was a beautiful, clear day, so is to-day also. The weather for the past month has been cloudy and squall. The ther mometer averages about 5 deg. above zero. It is said this winter so far has been much colder in the west than in the east. I have stood the cold pretty well, I have only had three bad colds, with which I was conOned to bed and was under the doctors care. Thank God, I am well now, but how long I will keep so it is impossible to tell. It is a terrible country for colds, and scarcely a man, woman or child is without one, during the winter. I have seen a Thanksgiving and Christmas in New England. The former is not observed as I thought it was. So far as I could see, Thanks giving in this section simply means a good dinner. The churches are slimly attended. But Christmas is a great day everywhere; Santa Claus is as heartily welcomed in New England as on the Pacific slope. A wonderful change in this respect lias come over the descendents of the Puritans in the past twenty-five- years. I am pleased to see the Northern Pacific IRailroad company have con tracted for 100 miles of road from Bismarck west. The papers say it is to be completed by the 1st of March, but this can hardly be possible. It must mean March, 1880. The con tractors have agreed to build it for 7,100 amile. This price is said to be the lowest at which any road has been built in this or any other country. This is a favorable time for building railroads, as labor is low and iron is cheaper than ever before. You know the Northern Pacific Railroad com pany now claim that a railroad grant never lapses, so long as congress does not repeal the grant. If this theory proves correct then the Astoria and McMinnville grant is in force yet. But grant or no grant, Astoria will have a railroad to the heart of the Wallamet valley before niany.years. T.A.H. The sahooner Hera, Capt. JMon son, of G. W, Hume's line, is now on the berth in San Francisco for Astoria, and will sail on Saturday next. She will not go above Astoria, but will load here for her outward voyage. Buchtel & Stolte, rfche photograph ers of Oregon have dissolved partner- ship, and the business is conducted by Joe liiinself, who has been engaged thoreat in Portland a quarter of a century. Fred Gere has accepted the place as operator. The last will and testament of the late Ferdinand Ferrell has been ad mitted to probate, and Capt. Geo. Flavel appointed executor. The -will of J. S. Chambers, deceased, has also been admitted to probate, and C. S. Wright appointed executor. Capt. and Engineer S. S. Doug lass is making a decided success of the steamer Westport. He arrived at As toria at three o'clock a. m. yesterday from Portland with a large and valua ble cargo for Trenchard & Upshur, E. 3: Larsen and others, and returned at one o'clock r. m. Some few days ago it was report ed in this city that Mr. Buncan, of the firm of R. D. Humo & Co. was dead. The report is confirmed by a private letter to Mr. Morgan from k". G. W. Hume, but no particulars are given. Mr. Duncan will be re- membered as one of the most energetic men in business here, and this report of hi3 death .will cause many jpangs of .regret. That Wharf Matter. Editor Astorian : The Kilkenny-cat quarrel, referred to in The Astorian of the 19th, is about this, according to one party, to wit: The State law gives owners of land abutting on tide water the right to build wharves in front thereof to ship diannd. That is one section of the law. The next section says: On application of the party having the right, and desiring to build such wharves dn incorporated towns, to the city council, said council shell, by ordinance or other like mode, pre scribe the mode and extent to which such wharves may be constructed be 3rond low water mark, so as not to unnecessarily interfere with the navi gation of such tide water. The wharf party in this tight have asked the citv council to prescribe the mode and ex tent to which they might build their wharf; and the council refuse to take action, or prescribe the mode, and give no legitimate or decent reason for their refusal; and moreover, a pre vious city council did prescribe the mode and extent to which the said wharf might be built, and said two years is hereby given to do the same. The two .years from that time are ex pired. Justice. How to Tan a Iamb Skin. If you will follow these directions you can tan a lamb skin and not lose I a hair of the fleece: "Make a strong soapsuds, using hot water; when it is cold -wash the skin in it, carefully squeezing it between the hands to get the dirt out of the wool; then wash the soap out with clean, cold water; next dissolve alum and salt, of -each half a pound, in a little hot water, which put in a tub of cold water suffi cient to cover the skin, and let it soak in it over Jiight, or twelve hours; now hang the skin over a pole to drain; when well drained spread or stretch carefully on a board to dry. It need not be tacked, if drawn out several times with the hand while drying. When a little damp, sprinkle pulver ized saltpetre and alum,-an ounce each mixed together, on the flesh side, rub bins it in well. It is now to hanir in the shade two er three days, the flesh side in, until perfectly dry, and when entirely dry, scrape the flesh side with a blunt knife to remove any scraps of flesh. Trim off all projecting points, and rub the flesh side with pumice or rotten stone, and with the hands. Prepared in tins way it is white ana beautiful, suitable for a door-mat, and also nice for he feet in a sleigh or wagon in cold weather.0' The San Francisco fGuide reports that the steamship Great Republic will sail from San Francisco for Asto ria on the first of February. The proposed change in the mail route between Astoria .and Portland, will allow passengers leaving Astoria in the morning to reach. Taconia, on Puget sound, and Albany in the Wal lamet valley, the same day, evening. It will alsogive the Puget sound peo ple their mails from SanJFrancisco one sday earlier -than heretofore. We see at stated that a colony for California, -with the special view to fruit growing, was organizing, to start out from Buffalo soon.
