cv A glvs gjailjj QsXsximx, ASTOPJA Oct. 11, IS77 Aphorisms. Judicious advertising always pays Ii 3'ou have a jrood thing, advertise it. If 3Tou haven't, don't. If you don't mean to mind your own business, it will not pay to advertise. Iseverrun down your opponent's goods in public. Let him do his own advertising. No one can censure a man in business who docs not advertise, if he has nothing worth advertising. It's a true of-advertiaing as of anything ,cle in this world. If it is worth doing at all. it i- worth doing well. You can't eat enough in one week to hist a whole year, and 3Tou can't advertise on that plan either. A large advertisement once, and then discontinued, creates the impression that the man has iailed. Injudicious advertising is like fishing where there's no fish. You need to let lli lines in.ll in the right place. If jou can arouse curiosity by an adver tisement, it is a great point gained. The iairsex don't hold all the curiosity in the vorkl. AbVEitTisiG by Splurges. Profit able and successful advertising is an art founded upon principles which may be mid to constitute a science. 3Iost sa gacious business men who advertise ex tensh'ely do not go upon blind, irregular impulses, but proceed according to an in teliigentand well-considered system which Ihey have deliberately adopted. Such men understand perfectly that one of the iftOst valuable becrets of profitable adver lM'S conits in constantly keeping them selves and their special line of business be fore the public. The name of the firm, hfc location nnd the articles or class of articles in which it deals, must be familiar ized to the public eye, and through that lo the public mind. It is the constant dripping that makes its impression upon even the hardest rock. To effect this, Pteady and continuous -advertising is far better than occasional splurges, no matter how showy and attractive. It is no doubt true that a bij splurge three or four times a year, filling a colum or two with display heads and double-leaded matter, ha- its effect. 13ut unless tho-e spasmodic appeals are supplemented ai.d reinforced by Miiall standing advertisements they are in danger of making no la-ting impression. In the long run the persistent advertiser, whose name stares the reader in the face every time he takes up his paper, will accomplish his object much more effectually than his rival who 1 el ies upon a splurge Qyry three 01 six months. This is a principle which needs only lo be started ir. order to secure iccoguition by sagacious business men; and almost all men of thatclass who have succeeded in building up a great business b3 advertising have acted upon it. The people of Oregon are not burned up four months in summer and lrozen or snowed in six months in winter, nor mil lions of property swept away in a night by overwhelming floods and devastating hur licanes, as they frequently are in the eastern and western states of the union. They do not live in fear of being carried to untimely graves in hundreds 13T the summer fevers that prevail in the South ern states, nor of being overwhelmed by earthquakes that visit California every two or three years, nor 3et by it-floods cvci.y filth or tenth year, not dried up by its drouth every thiid or fourth yeai. The summer disease- so destructive to human life among children in the Atlantic slates are almost unknown in Oregon. Oregon offers great attractions to thoc in seaich of new homes, lo-wit: Healthy and attractive diversity of surface. Grand sceneiy and mild climate. No excessive cold or heat. Average temperature, sum mer, G7, winter 3'J. Thunder-storm!; very rare, hurricanes unknown. Death late lower in Oregon than in any other Stale, east or west. Soil of unsurpassed lertility, especially suited lo cereal-, fruits, flax, hops, and hay. No failure of crop in Oregon for thirty years fiom aivy eaus-c. No drought-, as in California. Gicat abundance of the finest fruit. Stock-raisin cr verv profitable. As a farming country Oregon is not surpassed by any part of the union. ;2r-The Salem Statesman expresses ur views "to the point' in the following extract: "AVe have publ.-ihed birth, marriajre and death notices, free of charge, and shall continue to do so, provided they rfro furni-hed us for publication.
