When friends change, some by death and some by estrangement, how good to know that Christ changes not ; that he is the same to-day he was in time past : to re joice that the tie that knits a soul to the saviour is firm and lasting. Rutherford. 0, Sabbai.h; needed for a world of innocence, we salute thee, as thou comesi in the name of the Lord, radiant in the sunshine of that dawn which broke over crea tion's achieved work. Marching -downward in the track ol time, a pillar of refreshing cloud and of guiding name, interweaving with thy light new beams of discovery and promise ! Dr . Hamilton . God's children are strengthen ed by their falls. They learn to stand by their falls. Like tall cedars, the more they are blown the deeper they are rooted. That which men think is the overthrow of God's children, doth root them decider; so that, after all their out ward storms and inward declin- ings, this is the Lsae, "They take root downward, and bring forth fruit upward. " Sibus. Jesus has room in His heart for all Dis friends, and lie wishes each one to be "the friend which is as His own soul." One reason why some of us find no tone with whom we can be free and tell Inm all is, because Jesus wishes to ix that one. He says by that very circumstance, "I will be your friend; tell me everything, make free, treat me with confidence; my heart is ready to sympathize with you; my arm is outstretched to help you; my hand is open to sup ply you; all I have is thine; all I can consistently do I will do; only treat me with confidence, only make me your friend." J.Smith, Cheltenham. One design of God in the gos pel is to bring us to make Him the object of our undivided res pect, that He may engross our re gard every way. There is an in clination in the creature not only to the adoration of a lord and soverign, but to complacence in some one as a friend, some one that may be freely conversed with. !Nor does virtue nor holiness de stroy or weaken this inclination of our nature; but so hath God con trived in the affair of our redemp tion, that a divine person may be the object even of this inclination of our nature. And in order here to, such an one has come down to us, has taken our nature, and become one of us, and now calls Himself our friend, brother, our companien: "For my brethren and companions' sake will I now say, peace be within thee." Is not this all we can want? Jona than JEdwards. Christians are to "rejoice all the day." Each, day "brings its own trials, its own dangers, its own necessities, its own tempta tions; and there must "be a daily feeding upon Christ, if we would daily rejoice in Him. The food we ate yesterday is not the food of to-day; and so the grace given yesterda- is not the grace for to day. "We need a daily supply of spiritual strength for our. souls, as we do food for our "bodies. Therefore the prayer, "Give us this day our daily bread," applies to both. And we mav depend upon it God will give strength f or the day. If -we are called to suf fer, He will ghc us suffering grace; if ve are called to die, He will give us dying grace. He will give us grace when it is needed; j wuy should lie grve it before? Have we not found it so in our past experience? The trials we most feared have come upon us, and yet we have been a wonder to S&JMfe fe-i we shall see enough of finrPs goodness lo cause us to "rejoice -Canon Jjardsley. evernioraJ It is specially ajpalling that a man should perish through w?l ially rejecting the Divine sa va- tion. A drowning man thro wing off the life belt, a poisoned man pour ing the antidote upon the floor, a wounded man tearing orjen his wouuds; any one of these is a sad sight, but what shall we say cf a soul putting from it the Redeemer and choosing its own destrachon.'1 O souls, be warned, and forbear from eternal suicide. There is still the way of salvation, "Be lieve in the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved." I met with one the other night who had im bibed the notion that saving faith was sinrply to believe that the doctrines of the "Word, of G od,and the statements therein made, are true. Now faith includes that, but it is much more. You may believe all this book to be tine, and be lost notwithstanding your belief. You must so believe it as to activponit by trusting. "Trust what?" say you. Let us alter the question before we auswer it. "Trust whom?" You have to tcust in a living person, in the Lord Jesus Christ, who died as the sub stitute for those who trust Him and lives to see that those whom He bought with His blood are al so redeemed from their sins by power, and brought home to heaven. Trust Jesus Christ, soul. Have done with yourself as your confidence, and commit your soul into the keeping of the faithful Redeemer. Mr. Spurgeon. Cliurcli Directory. F-PST Congrfgvt'Ovat, Ciiuncn.
