This is the day set apart by Sitka Jack, a leading Indian chief in Alaska, for a grand potlatch in Sitka. In ad dition to the testimony of Captain Collins, we have the report of Capt. J. W. White, of the United States Revenue Marine, "who recently went to Sitka under instructions from the secretary of the treasury where he ar rived on the 10th of August, and sub sequently, with the steamer Tom Cor win, visited the following Indian villa ges: Chilcarts, Ank, Takon, Kake, Kontznen and Hooner; returned to Sitka Aug. 27th and sailed thence on the 28th; arrived at Fort Wrangle on the 29th and sailed Sept. 1st; arrived at Xaita on the 1st and left on the 3d; arrived at Astoria on the 12th. Capt. White's report to the treasury department on the situation in Alaska, closes as follews: "I have to add that from the best data obtainable the pop ulation of this place is as follews: About twelve or fifteen white men, of various nationalities, claiming to be American citizens, live full-blooded Russians, including the priest and about two hundred and seventy half breeds, including men, women and children. The Indian population varies from 300 to 1,500, according to the season. The priest informs me that the half-breeds arc a low, degra ded class, over whom he has no influ ence, and that more fear is to be ap prehended from them when drunk than from the Indians themselves." That there is urgent need of doing something for Alaska besides protect ing the seal skin monopoly, all must agree, and we cannot think otherwise than that our friend Harvey, acting collector of customs at Sitka, is being murdered, while the Lackawana swings at anchor in the bay at Port Townsend full of Nanaimo coal, and her officers and men are indulging in the giddr mazes of the waltz ashore, to "exquis ite music" from Olympia, as the Argus expresses it, and the shouts of the Port Townsenders is: "Hurrah for the United States navy." Yes, hurrah for the United States navy; but think of poor Maj. Perry, on his death-bed in a British hospital at Victoria, think of poor Harvey, alone in Sitka, power less to restrain Sitka Jack from tear ing down government buildings, and murdering our own people. Yes, hurrah for the United States navy, the Dance at Port Townsend, and the Death in Sitka. Eastern Oregon Enterprises. While people here are apparently dreaming over things that ought to be done for Astoria, such for instarcc as tht organization of a company to build a wagon road out of the town, so that we might have some means for getting away from this peninsula in case of a storm, besides going in boats; the or ganization of a company for buying wheat for shipment; the building of ilouring mills; the construction and use of vessels; and a dozeu or twenty other matters which demand prompt, energetic action, concentrated action, for the benefit of every man is. the city we say, while we are composedly dreaming over the situation here, our friends elsewhere are :lt work. Before we fully awaken from this lethargy, this "Astoria sleep," the people of eastern Oregon will be coming down here in force. They have incorpora ted another railroad company up there in the Blue mountains, the Blue moun tain and Columbia river Railroad Company, and the new Gazette just started at La Grande, tells us that the company expect to have 50 miles com pleted by one year from this time, and the whole in two years. It is to be a three foot track, and to be every wy equipped with first class rolling stock and rails. The company have undertaken this work because their own interest and business demand that it be done. They are no adventurers. They are men whose every dollar and every hope is in Grand Honde valley. Hence they are pledged, in ovary way, to a truthful and energetic fulfillment of their task, and the public may trust them to finish what they have begun. The value of land alone in the valley, in one year of the completion of this road, will more than pay the entire cost. Every land owner ought to aid the enterprise forward by labor, money or materials. They have the same interest as those who have organized themselves into a company solely to consolidate and utilize tho force and ability of the people for the benefit of the people. A strong pull, and a pull altogether, though not a very long pull,' will sorely open the valley within two years to the coming and going of one of the most prosper ous trades of Oregon, and make it the favorite resort of tourists and pleasure seekers from all over the country. Walla Walla has been ground ex ceeding fine by the mills of the Walla Walla valley road, and it is proposed to tap this Blue mountain road, twenty-five miles from Walla Walla, and thus secure a competing line, and put a check upon Dr. Baker's style of do ing business. This Walla Walla branch would intersect the Blue moun tain road in a fine region, and every mite of the entire system, from Grand Ronde valley to the Columbia river would pay as it was built. This is the line the Oregon Steam Navigation folk wanted the last legislative assem bly to assist, but failed to net the de sired aid, more in consequence of local rrejudices about home than for any other reason. HARRIED. At the residence of D. K. Warren, in Astoria, by Rev.F. Elliott, Clara A.Madi son and Ferdinand A. Fisher, all of As toria.
