r v J Sfts &ilaj xrcftm, SATURDAY . 31 ay C, 187C. i4 HOOSIER IN LUCK. . Remarkable Story of an Indiana Boy's Adventures in Brazilian Wilds. From the Indianapolis Journal, April 12th. San ford Morris of this city has just re ceived from his ton, Ernest Morn's., the hoy naturalist now seeking fame and specimens m Brazil, a letter which tells a most remarkable story of his good for tune, in quite a difteient field. Nearly two years ago young Morris, enthusiastic in natural history and only eighteen vears ot age, left Indianapolis, struck the Ohio, and reached New Orleans by a skiff V03 uge, and thence sailed for Paia, in Brazil, intending to ascend the Amazon and col lect specimens 111 the wild South American forests. Report ol his exploration have , been received and published from time to I time, a& he reached points of communica- I lion along the route. He has asconded to the fountains of the Arazon in Ecuador, hundreds of miles beyond the point reach ed by the naturalist Bate. sgiH out. snmn ' years ago by the British Government, and lurnished with unlimited means. Ac counts of his wonderful adventures and successful areer as a lover or sience hav ing reached the cars of the Smithsonian Institute, and various scier.tiiic associa tions in S'ew York and Philadelphia, he has been entrasred to dnlivor Wim-pcnn l.iw return, and an Eastern publishing house will lon.-.i. k:.. : t ' i . " -. i iij 1auuv.11 ins juurnai m oook iorm. ile writes to his family here relating the grand est otall adventuiesyet. The story is as J juuows, anu reaa nice a chapter liom the! Arabian Knights: ""While near Sautarm, 1 below Villa Franca, a furious storm arose. Whilepreparing shelter with palms hesaw a 3'oung Indian maiden on the stream in a light canoe and trying to make the shore before the storm came on. She was not 1 equal to the task, and Morris, noticing she "was being dawn slowhy to waid the power ful current, swam boldly out to her rescue, at great peril to himself, and pushed the canoe salely to the shore. Her gratitude took the shape of an invitation to coi duct Jier home. The young hei o accepter, and after aweary tramp and some snapshoot ing at wild beasts on the way, returned her home, only to find, to his surprise, that her father was a native chief of a pow erful Brazilian tiibe, and owned title deeds to the vast legion tying between the river Amazon and the Sierra Acary range of mountains, and that the girl was his only child. The old chiet overwhelmed him with kindness and gifts, has taken him into the family, and now offers him the hand of Miss Princes who is extremely beauliful and wears a diamond-studded giidle that would ransom a king. He promises Moms countless treasures from his dia mond beds and golfl field-, and the help of but liis pride i pitched in a royal key, 1 aiiu oeioie niarragecan take pace he in sists that the .on of science shall tske the Indian beauty to his American home as a sister and obtain the consent of his parents to the match.'" The father runs a 10x12 lamp store here, and though he cautioned Ernest not to get mixed up with anv of those girls down there, he shows a dispos ition to favor this diamond future tor his son. M. Habel says it is a mistake to suppose that the accumulation of guano on the islands of Chincha consists of the excrements of sea birds inhabiting those islands. In reality, it is composed of two stratas, differing both in the mode and date of their origin. The up per stratum, far the smaller, is composed of the excremeuts and bodies of birds and seals now oc cupying these islands. The lower statum took its commencement in pre-historic times from excrements of birds let fall to the bottom of the sea, only a limited portion of which was occupied by these birds. The statum thus formed has been since raised (as still occurs m the present day), at the same time as the bottom of the sea and the is lands themselves are only the re sult of these upheavals. Advertise An exchange says: Mnybo you think that people don't like to read advcrtisdiuonts ! If you do you are much A mistaken. Fresh, well-put well-placed ad vertisements are news ! Thoy aro welcomed, read-nay, studied.! The newspaper that is nhvo with them is increasingly acceptable and so is the business house that knows how to get them up, possessed withal with the sagacity and nerve to keep them up. Warning to Delinquent Sui;scriijers. A Kussian paper announces that a belief in the approaching end of the world has seized on the Cossacks of the Don. Many t especially azed. people, are giving up wordlv affairs, wearing a shroud, and ordering their coffins. Un every road aro men repairing to Moscow to be consecrated prices, in order that the smallest village may have its own priest and church. iho Russian paper fails to state whether its delinquent subscribers have taken the scare and paid up. That to our mind would bo stronger evidence of the approach of tae .Millennium than any thing that a super stitious Cossack could advance. Don't Re x.d Advertisements. Occasionally a business man is encountered who professes to believe that" p'eoplc don't read advertise ments any how !" A greater mistake is sel dom made, if a typographical error creeps into an ad. it soon becomes the talk of the neighborhood, and if the people do not read ads. how do they drop' on errors with such facility ? The other dayihe advertisement of 'the Centennial Kcstaurant appeared, in which tho word ' eating" was set up" fating," where upon we were duly notified of tho error by seven Salinasites and one Chinaman, and last ly, the Monterey Herald felt in duty bound to notify us also.
