With the recent passage of House Bill 2168, Oregon officially recog- nized Juneteenth as a state holiday. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown signed the bill on June 5. She stated, “Now is a time for healing and jus- tice. To reimagine a more perfect union that truly protects the rights of all. Celebrating and recogniz- ing Juneteenth as a holiday is one step towards that. A small step. But a step we must take.” Florence ORganizes (FOR) will sponsor a June- teenth Celebration on Sat- urday, June 19, outside at the Florence United Meth- odist Church from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Florence City Councilor Sally Wantz will deliver a statement. There will also be a spe- cial guest speaker, Holli Johnson, the newly elected first African American Di- rector on the LCC School Board Director. Other speakers include Siuslaw School Board Director Maureen Miltenberger, LCC Florence Dean Russ Pierson and Rev. Dr. Kar- en Love Baisinger from the Florence United Method- ist Church. This is a family-friendly event and there will be fun activities for children. Mu- sical entertainment will be provided by local musi- cian and songwriter Sunny Sundstrom. Bring a chair and a picnic and enjoy the joyous event. For more information, visit forflorence.org.
