Events this week includ- ed Senior Walks through Siuslaw and Mapleton elementary schools, a rainy Graduate Parade through Historic Old Town Florence and two graduation cer- emonies. COM By Mark Brennan Siuslaw News S IUSLAW N EWS 2 S ECTIONS | 18 P AGES C OPYRIGHT 2021 On Tuesday, June 8, the City of Florence held a vir- tual meeting with represen- tatives from both Florence and governmental entities as well as local special districts to discuss the redesignation of the city’s enterprise zones. The redesignation would be submitted by the city, with the Port of Siuslaw as a par- ty to the request, to Business Oregon, the State of Oregon’s economic development agen- cy. Florence’s Enterprise Zones allow qualifying businesses to receive a 3- to 5-year proper- ty tax exemption on site and building improvements. An Enterprise Zone also freez- es tax rates for property im- provements at pre improve- ment levels. Business types which qual- ify for consideration include manufacturers, processors, shippers and other opera- tions which provide goods and services to other busi- nesses. Florence also extends ex- emptions to hotels, motels, and destination reports. Sponsored by city, port, county or tribal governments, an enterprise zone typically serves as a focal point for lo- cal development efforts. Fieri is the host of popular shows “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives,” “Grocery Games” and “Triple D’s Travels.” The filming of the segment coincides with the one-year anniversa- ry of the shipwreck of The Aquarius on June 29, 2020, that claimed the lives of Amber and Kyle Novelli, who founded Novelli’s and cre- ated its famous crab chowder. MARK BRENNAN/SIUSLAW NEWS Chamber, Port & City bring back July 4 show The Florence Area Cham- ber of Commerce, the Port of Siuslaw and the City of Florence have come together to save Florence’s annual Fourth of July fireworks display. The fireworks will be shot over the Siuslaw River from the east end of the Port of Siuslaw Campground in His- toric Old Town beginning at about 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 4, to provide a multitude of great vantage points for spectators. “Over the past two weeks, we have been holding our collective breaths, biting our nails, and working with key stakeholders — the show’s producer Western Display Fireworks, the Port of Siuslaw and the City of Florence — for a safe contin- gency plan in the event that circumstances changed,” said Chamber President/CEO Bettina Hannigan.
