The reserve is offering winter hikes and other social distanced activities this winter. www.dfw.state.or.us/RR Local Lakes and Ponds: North Coast lakes are done with trout stocking until next spring, but many lakes have hold- over trout from earlier season’s stockings. Warmwater fishing should be over for the year as water temperatures are too cold to keep those species active. Mid-coast lakes will receive trout stockings the first couple weeks of February. These lakes include: Cleawox, Munsel, Alder and Dune lakes. Wild coho fish- eries in Siltcoos and Tahkenitch lakes are open and provide a unique opportunity to catch a coho in a coastal lake. SIUSLAW RIVER: Winter steelhead Winter steehead fishing on the Siuslaw has been blown out with the recent high water. Expect the first good push of fish to be around when the river drops back into shape this weekend and next week. The Whitaker Creek area is the best place to target returning hatchery fish. Guided Nature Hikes are being offered at the South Slough Reserve from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Jan. 14 and 26. Come for a walk in the woods and explore the flora and fauna on some of South Slough Reserve’s most popular trails. The two-mile loop is well maintained and relatively level. Attendees will meet at the South Slough Reserve Visitor Center. Dress for the weather; wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water and snacks. Registration is required, and the event is limited to six partici- pants. Register at www.southsloughestuary. org • Birds on the Estuary will take place this Friday, Jan. 15, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Explore the shores of Charleston in search of winged wildlife. Interpreter and binoculars provided. Dress for the weather. Meet at the Charleston Visitors Center. Registration is required, and the event is limited to six participants. Register at www.southsloughestuary. org • Millicoma Marsh Bird Walk (10 to 11:30 a.m., Jan. 20 and Feb. 5: Come enjoy great views of the bay and one of the best birding spots in Coos County. Registration is required, and the event is limited to six participants. Register at www.southsloughestuary. org. • All About Crab! will be held 1 to Yachats Lions Club to host anual crab feed fundraiser For more than 20 years, the Yachats Lions Club has held an “all the Crab you can eat” event in Yachats, Ore. The annual trek to Yach- ats to eat Dungeness Crab is a tradition for families and groups from across Oregon and Washington. This years’ crab feed will be a little different due to covid-19, we will be sell- ing crab meals available for take-out only. It will consist of one whole local crab, cole slaw, and home- made bread. Meals will be available for pick-up (scheduled times) at the Lions Hall, 344 Fourth St. in Yachats. The $25 per person tickets are available for sale online at www.yachatslionsclub. org. You can select your pick- up time and order as many meals as you like. Kevin Yorks, coordina- tor of the popular crab feed this year says, “We get great support from the commu- nity and local businesses in Yachats, Waldport and Newport. South Beach Fish Market cooks and cleans the best tasting local crab you ever ate.” All proceeds from the an- nual crab feed fundraiser supports Lions Commu- nity service projects with scholarships to graduating seniors, food pantries, the preschool and after school programs of the Yachats Youth and Family program, South Lincoln Resources programs, eyeglasses for children and adults. With the motto “We Serve,” Yachats Lions Club is celebrating 71 years of ser- vice to Yachats and South Lincoln County. The Yach- ats Lions Thrift Store has served our community for more than 40 years. See ODFW invites artists to compete in annual wildlife art contest Artists in Oregon and throughout the world are in- vited to compete in one or all three of ODFW’s 2022 stamp art competitions. The winning artist in each contest receives a $2,000 award and winning artwork is used to produce collector stamps and other promotional items with sale proceeds ben- efitting Oregon’s fish, wildlife and their habitats.
